‘That’s me done for food today’ after a 3 course lunch

I went to a restaurant with four friends for a Christmas lunch a few days ago. We all ate 3 courses and had a glass of wine each (none of us are big drinkers). The portions were decent-sized but not ridiculously big.

As we were finishing one of my friends said something along the lines of ‘that was lovely, I wont be needing anything else to eat today’. Following this all my other friends nodded/agreed.

While I didn’t say anything I was thinking that this is not the case for me at all! After that lunch at 1pm I ate beans on toast at around 7pm. I think of myself as someone with a pretty normal appetite, but if my friends were being truthful I ate a substantial amount more than them that day.

I remember a few years back my MiL making a similar comment after a restaurant lunch, that she wouldn’t need to eat anything else that day. However as we happened to be staying with her at the time I know she later ate sandwich and soup at dinner time.

So - my friend’s comment got me thinking. What do people actually mean when they use this phrase? Is it literal, as in ‘after this big lunch I will not eat any food until tomorrow’? Or do people simply mean that they won’t need to have a big evening meal, but might have eg a sandwich? Or is it something some people (women!) say without meaning it, to indicate they have a small/delicate appetite, though they may have every intention of eating something else that day.

For what it’s worth all of my friends in the restaurant are healthy weights, and as far as I know no one has any history of disordered eating.

I always think it would be a lot better for me to eat my main meal at lunchtime - if I have a big lunch I don't snack in the afternoon and I often hardly want anything in the evening, whereas I can quite happily have a normal sandwich or salad type lunch, snacks in the afternoon, plus a big meal in the evening. I once spent a year as an au pair for a family abroad where they had their main meal at lunchtime - the kids had nursery and school in the morning but were home for lunch - and it suited me very well. Sadly life in the UK doesn't really allow for this kind of eating pattern.

Two years ago I went for a Christmas breakfast with a colleague - it was bloody enormous! I mean, it was called a toolbox! I finished it and declared, I don't need lunch or dinner! I didn't feel hungry the following breakfast, either, so I skipped it. I didn't eat again until two days passed...

Bullshit.

OneKeyAtATime · 20/12/2019 13:54

I would defo have dinner and probably supper. I would certainly never proclaim to be full for the day! But then I have a big appetite

ChristmasFluff · 20/12/2019 14:07

If it was an early lunch, around noon, I'd definitely eat again.

If it was after 2pm, no I wouldn't need to.

Well, maybe cheese and crackers before bed, or in the middle of the night.

OneKeyAtATime · 20/12/2019 14:11

The thing is in hotel breakfast buffets most people go for several helpings. Where are these undereaters?

They're not on Mumsnet Grin

I have to admit, I will eat loads (not to be pig but more than i would normally eat) at hotel breakfasts given half the chance as I'm tight and it means i can enjoy lots of smaller snacks during the day and not have to worry about lunch. I'm not sure if that actually works as I'm sure I eat more when grazing from cafe to cafe Grin

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/12/2019 14:53

Where are these undereaters?

Some people call us undereaters. If we get fish & chips from the takeaway we order a small chips between four of us (youngest is 16 and nearly 6 ft tall so we’re not taking children) and there are way too many chips ... this is a one person serving for others. If we order pizza we have two large pizzas (no sides) and there is enough leftover for lunch the next day.

We simply don’t have large appetites as a family... it does mean that if we have friends over to eat I have to do larger portions, and I warn people that we go to that I don’t eat very much so that I don’t insult people by leaving food on my plate.

Skinnychip · 20/12/2019 15:03

Depends what time the meal was but even then, sometimes I wont feel hungry again that day, sometimes I will . I probably wouldnt eat anything else until about 9 though.

Bluntness100 · 20/12/2019 15:06

A small portion of chips between four, and it's roo many?

I think him just won mumsnet bingo 🤣

BusterTheBulldog · 20/12/2019 15:06

Out for pub lunch tomorrow, won’t need to eat after!

ivykaty44 · 20/12/2019 15:13

As you get older your appetite diminishes, so my father will eat breakfast (porridge) and then has a hot lunch out, supper is often a couple of crackers an apple with a piece of cheese

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 20/12/2019 15:13

A small portion of chips between four, and it's too many?

Our chippy is like that. The portions are huge! Utterly ridiculous.

hazell42 · 20/12/2019 15:15

At least 2 of them were lying
At least

RogueV · 20/12/2019 15:15

I’d still eat dinner

Skinnychip · 20/12/2019 15:17

I dont often eat 3 courses because starters are a waste of space that could be better filled with chocolate, later on!!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/12/2019 15:17

A small portion of chips between four, and it's too many?

It’s what the chip shop call a small portion! I call it an enormous portion! Honestly far too many for us!

OlaEliza · 20/12/2019 15:20

Yeah, I'm sure it is 😂

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 20/12/2019 15:57

Just because your chippy is stingy with the chips doesn't mean they all are. Ours offers "regular" or "large". I have no idea what you're meant to do if you're alone because the potions are huge.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/12/2019 16:04

Yeah, I'm sure it is 😂

It genuinely is! I pour them out onto one dinner plate when I’m dishing up the food and this “small” chips fills the plate as a big mound of chips. I’m not planning on having fish and chips this side of a Christmas but if I was I’d photograph them for you!

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 20/12/2019 16:13

Our chippy is like that. The portions are huge! Utterly ridiculous.

A lot of chippies are like that.

We usually go with one supper, one single between two, pot of gravy on the side as my partner doesn't like it (the weirdo) and share the chips. There's still usually plenty of chips to spare.

Bluntness100 · 20/12/2019 16:37

It's like the mystical mumsnet chicken that feeds a family of four for a week. 🤣

Bluntness100 · 20/12/2019 16:39

So why did you write that people call you under eaters and give your small portion of chips between four of an example of this? 🤣

Hoolajerry · 20/12/2019 16:41

Haven't read the whole thread but i'm like this. Knew I would have a big meal at lunch so didn't eat breakfast. I won't have dinner either. Might have some fruit or a smoothie but have no appetite for a big dinner.

macaroniandpizza · 20/12/2019 16:41

If id had a 3 course lunch id probably have a bit of toast later in the day if i was hungry or maybe a jelly or a yoghurt. Ive really been trying to improve my eating habits so would see lunch in this instance as my big meal of the day and adjust the rest of the day accordingly

itssquidstella · 20/12/2019 16:43

I have a big appetite and am pretty greedy but if I have a two or three course Sunday lunch then I won't usually have anything else that evening. I've probably eaten a day's worth of calories in one meal so I genuinely can't fit anything else in!

Usually, though, I have a big lunch and a big dinner but don't eat breakfast.
