Well, it's been done for Trump since he got elected.
No doubt some people will complain it's on AIBU - but it's a place with traffic.

So let's use this to keep an eye on the changes under Boris.

First Thing:

Boris introduces clause in the withdrawal agreement so the UK must leave with WTO rules if there is no trade agreement with the EU by the end of 2020

www.theguardian.com/business/2019/dec/17/pound-slides-to-pre-election-levels-in-wake-of-bid-to-outlaw-brexit-extension

Feel free to comment and add things that you notice changing. The Trump threads are at 97 now.

But ANY government with a huge majority could do with having a n eye on them when it comes to policies and i would like stuff, whether good or bad, to be in one easy place to look at....things get missed

Hopefully things won't get missed...there is a lot of stuff going on.

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 21/12/2019 11:44

Hopefully the torys are going to be brilliant....but there is something dreadfully wrong with your politics if you ‘won’ and wont let anyone discuss the bad stuff and you are UNABLE to discuss the good stuff

Well said. Surely if you voted for the winning side you want to make sure that they do the things they promised to gain your vote.

pigsDOfly · 21/12/2019 12:16

Posters at the beginning of the thread going on about 'left wing propaganda' what nonsense.

Keeping an eye on whether or not the government in power is keeping its pledges is eminently sensible.

Are we supposed to accept everything they do without question or query. We're not living in a dictatorship where nothing can be challenged.

That's the nature of democracy you watch how a government performs and if they're not doing what they should do, in five years times we can all vote them out if we so choose.

Good to have this thread.

Alsohuman · 21/12/2019 12:22

Interesting that R4 wanted to run a piece this morning on how new MPs are finding their new jobs. No 10 instructed all its new intake to refuse to take part. Can they really not see they’re cutting off their nose to spite their face? If we only ever hear from the opposition, they’re not going to be very persuasive.

Torchlightt · 21/12/2019 12:24

chomalungma · 21/12/2019 12:35

Personally I think the BBC should stop the Conservatives appearing on any of their shows if they are not wanting to be scrutinised.

Give the oppostiion air time to pick apart what's being done.

All the new Northern Tory voters who wanted change have voted these people in to represent them

Does not look like any Northern Town I visit
But hopefully the residents of those towns WILL hold them to account

I haven't read all of this thread - but feel strongly that it is so important to have this discussion going here.

The government wants to silence questions - as it seems some of their voters too. They want to silence the BBC because it dares to examine what they are doing. Watch this:

The attitude of Nadhim Zahawi here is chilling.

@frumpety I got a house through help to buy and 20% off child care. 😊My lazy arsed sister had to get a job and is now a productive member of society.

Thanks Dusty that's a good link.

A few 'buried' news items today.
Cobham takeover: Government signs off £4billion merger of UK defence giant by US private equity firm - Evening Standard

The founding family of this company have asked the government to intervene as 'it wasn't in the UK's interest' for a US equity company to be in charge of a defence company here but there we go. It has happened.

DuncinToffee · 21/12/2019 17:22

From the Cobham article

Lady Cobham said: "This is a deeply disappointing announcement and one cynically timed to avoid scrutiny on the weekend before Christmas.

Well - not yet, anyway...

Bluesrunthegame · 21/12/2019 18:52

I found a piece in Farmers Weekly that suggests trade talks with the US have already mentioned lowering food standards:

Hoping I've got the link right.

There also seem to be moves to remove all parliamentary oversight of Brexit and legislation to conduct future trade negotiations in secret. I realise there has to be some confidentiality when negotiating, but I feel there should be Parliamentary scrutiny of important deals so we can understand the implications.

Happy to see this thread. People can post positive changes, but we can also see exactly what is being done and comment on it. Our MPs need to know their actions are being held up to the light.

That here should NOT be parliamentary scrutiny of future trade deals reveals an intention of Cabinet Dictatorship that should worry us all deeply.

Interesting

BBC could review the use of Twitter by journalists. It would be good if they could fact check first.

So glad this thread has got back on the track it was intended for...

chomalungma · 21/12/2019 19:59

Well, it was always going to have people come on here who weren't directly interested in the topic.

It's inspired by The List by Amy Siskind. She tracked the changes Trump brought to the USA

Interesting comments from Leo Varadkher

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/dec/21/johnson-dances-around-varadkar-claims-he-is-on-hard-brexit-path

"The Irish prime minister, Leo Varadkar, warned that Johnson was embarking on a “harder Brexit than we anticipated” and said he feared the UK wanted to “undercut” its European rivals on food, health and product safety after leaving the bloc.

Johnson was asked about the taoiseach’s comments while visiting British troops in Estonia on Saturday, but would only say: “What everybody wants to do is put Brexit behind us on January 31 and move on, and there’s a lot of goodwill and a lot of energy now about building the new deep and special partnership, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

It comes as Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, said Britain must adhere to EU rules after Brexit in order to secure a trade deal and prevent a “race to the bottom”.

He said its main objectives are to agree common social and environmental standards.

Johnson has insisted there would be “no alignment” with EU rules under the terms of a trade deal he wants to strike with the bloc after his withdrawal act bill was passed through the House of Commons on Friday.

Barnier also said it would be “immensely challenging” to conclude a trade agreement by the deadline of the end of next year.

In an article for the Project Syndicate website, Barnier said the EU would seek to make the most of the short time available “but like the UK, we will keep our strategic interests in mind”.

“We know that competing on social and environmental standards – rather than on skills, innovation, and quality – leads only to a race to the bottom that puts workers, consumers, and the planet on the losing side.

“Thus, any free-trade agreement must provide for a level playing field on standards, state aid, and tax matters.”"

Peregrina · 21/12/2019 21:44

I am quite sure that Johnson does not want a trade deal. His only problem is how to spin it when the economy crashes so that he and his cronies are not to blame.

Dusty01 · 21/12/2019 23:24

I don't think he will be able to spin it - will he? Spin works better, I think, in pressurised election campaigns where nobody has time to process or reflect on things properly.

But so many people are awake and alert to spotting the lies now ... I know those that voted for Johnson are not ... yet ... but word will spread.

I don't think Johnson/Cummings or the rest of them are going to get away with this.

ssd · 22/12/2019 00:01

I don't think he has to spin anything
When it all goes tits up he'll disappear, just like David Cameron has done
Back to his money and connections.
