AIBU to send my daughter as a colourful angel?

Nativity is on Tuesday and my daughter would like to wear a rainbow coloured floaty dress, blue wings, white cardigan and white tights.
Plus pipe cleaner halo headband.

Do I have to persuade her to wear a white sheet and try and make something?

Tbf there were no angels in the bible with 2 wings.

Gabriel, Michael and the other archangels had no wings.
The seraphim had 6 wings
The cherubim had 4 wings and were covered with eyes
The four living creatures had six wings, the heads of animals and were covered in eyes.
At least Gabriel and the cherubim were described as frightening.

None of them were ever described as wearing white.

So basically I think your daughter can wear whatever she wants and she'll look adorable in that outfit

Also @rubyismyworld the bible doesn't explicitly condemn homosexuality.

The original hebrew and the context of the 'man should not lie with another man' line suggest that it's actually about male on male incest.
The line would be more accurately translated to 'man should not lie with a male relative, just as he should not lie with a female relative.

This article explains it in more depth

There are however many verses telling people to mind their own business and leave it to god to punish and judge others and to have compassion for others wether they share your views or not.

Heavy stuff for a nativity thread

Sargass0 · 15/12/2019 22:53

That dress doesn't scream alternative at all though. If anything I think it says the opposite. I'm a girl so I wear stereotypical girly things. Send her as a goth angel if she's soooo alternative and doesn't follow the crowd. Unless of course all her classmates are goths as well. Its so difficult trying to be different these days!

TrixieFranklin · 15/12/2019 23:24

I actually self identify as a non binary gay angel fairy.

It sounds fab to me.

The Bible story is nothing like the nativity play young children act.

The Bible has no donkey for a start. WHile M and J are away having a bay in a stable there is a mass slaughter of all boys under 2.

Some Angels in the bible are just down right weird and don't resemble humans. I think (open to be corrected) angels in the Bible don't have wings, they were added by artists because they needed to move around the world quickly.

The three kings are actually an unspecified number of wise people (male and female) who arrive weeks if not months after the birth in the stable.

An angel in a rainbow dress is no where near as shocking as Gabriel having a sex change. Go for it OP

Gabriel was/is male.

Back to the original question...

I think the outfit you picked is fine. I was imagining something much brighter. I don’t think she will stick out at all.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 16/12/2019 05:42

Apart from the rather disturbing side-tracking into religious homophobia, this has been a classic

Op I don't like some of these replies waah!

Don't post in AIBU then!

NerrSnerr · 16/12/2019 09:47

@Nextphonewontbesamsung What post would you describe as* Op I don't like some of these replies waah!*? There was one mention of passive aggressive comments but she said she would ask the preschool today what they thought so pretty reasonable I say.

halcyondays · 16/12/2019 09:55

Everyone else will be in white, either bought costumes which are white with gold or silver or a white pillowcase with gold or silver tinsel. Girls tend to have the costumes, boys the pillowcases.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/12/2019 11:03

Rainbow angel sounds lovely but you'll piss off the other mothers who stick to the brief. For that reason alone I'd check early with the preschool so they can relax the costume requirements for all the other angels. But what a gorgeous idea!

nuxe1984 · 16/12/2019 17:59

It's the halo and wings that will make her an angel - not a white or coloured dress!

Send her in it ... she'll look brilliant ...

HuggedTrees · 16/12/2019 18:40

That outfit looks perfect for her

SuzieCath · 16/12/2019 18:45

Let your daughter express her creativity, the school hasn't requested specific costumes and I doubt a colourful angle is really going to prevent the story of Christmas from being told. Embrace your child's individuality, I like she wants to be different. Enjoy the show Smile

Straycats · 16/12/2019 19:08

I work at a Preschool and things are much more laid back as they’re little ones, I couldn’t see any staff being against it, as you just want them (hopefully) up on the stage and happy with it.

RhiWrites · 16/12/2019 19:38

it’s offensive to people with religion to say ‘lgbt angel’. Rainbow angel fair enough. ‘LGBT angel’ is a big no

As a bisexual Christian I couldn’t disagree more.

The Catholic church is historically homophobic but religious people are not automatically bigoted. The Anglican church is becoming more inclusive. I know devout people who care passionately about diversity and inclusivity.

Rainbows have multiple meanings. I personally find the rainbow of peace and the LGBTQ+ spectrum go very well together. 🌈

endlessstrife · 16/12/2019 19:40

I’m a Christian, but I’m guessing many people who ‘celebrate ‘ Christmas are not. This is just another ‘ school play ‘ to most people, so it wouldn’t matter what you wear. It depends why you’re doing it. Are you making a statement? in which case, is it fair on your child? Or is it you just want her in something colourful? The rainbow is a sign from God that he’ll never flood the entire earth again. What’s the school’s policy? Surely it’s one dress for all. I’d like to think that it would make people think about Jesus, and not how many presents they’ve got to buy, and how much all the food will cost! I hope you enjoy it.

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 16/12/2019 19:45

Hi everyone
Nursery have said she can wear whatever she likes and they’d hate anyone to fork out for something if they can use something they already own.

Mildly colourful angel it is.

I'm glad the nursery have said to wear anything. I hope she enjoys it.

I wonder what Jesus would have said. I bet he'd have said to wear what you want as long as you're happy. Seems the Christian way.

FreedomfromPE · 16/12/2019 19:50

Excellent. This thread really shows the stunted creativity and confidence of expression that happens in the education system. Pretty sure angels are shown a multi coloured in a variety of books I've seen.

katy1213 · 16/12/2019 19:54

Who laid down the law that angels are white! It's just kids dressing-up for mums and dads. Let her enjoy herself. A rainbow angel sounds lovely.

Happymum12345 · 16/12/2019 21:00

Put her in whatever you/she wants! It’s a Pre school nativity.

BigFatLiar · 16/12/2019 21:04

Nursery have said she can wear whatever she likes and they’d hate anyone to fork out for something if they can use something they already own.

After all the questioning and worry we find they don't care. Only goes to show that a lot of the hassle we have we make for ourselves because we never take the time to simply ask but assume.

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 16/12/2019 21:13

@BigFatLiar there’s truth in that.

OP posts:
Weebleonaworkout · 16/12/2019 21:25

Well, I for one love the idea of a colourful angel. If she wants her angel to be multi coloured then that's wonderful. Who's to say they aren't? Bless her heart.
