Inspired by another thread where I was looking at all the different dishes people have.

I tend to do
Turkey and a ham
Roast potatoes and mashed potatoes
Red cabbage
Carrots (roasted)
Parsnips
Yorkshire puddings (yes I know!!)
Sprouts (bacon is usually involved).
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets

Aibu to ask what’s on your menu

First year cooking the dinner so it might end up being McDonald’s! If it goes to plan however it will be-
Turkey
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings
Mash
Roast potatoes
Carrots roasted
Parsnips roasted
Individual portions of cauliflower cheese (I hate it when it touches the gravy!)

Dessert will be some sort of m and a special I think!

bridgetreilly · 14/12/2019 23:32

I really don't understand having more than one roast meat. I agree it's nice to have a ham to eat on Boxing Day or other times around Christmas, but I wouldn't be cooking it on Christmas Day, and I wouldn't be serving it alongside turkey.

Anyway, this year we're having pheasant because there aren't many of us.

Babybel90 · 14/12/2019 23:33

@Jinglebellissimo yeah, some of their stuff is a bit Hmm but I just get an easy carve turkey in a foil tray, prewrapped pigs in blankets, Pre-made gravy, Pre-made cranberry and bread sauce, Christmas cake, so nothing they can do anything too weird to, then I shove all the veg in the oven at the same time to roast, don’t bother with peeling or parboiling.

What if saves in effort is well worth it to me.

Jinglebellissimo · 14/12/2019 23:37

@Calic0 sounds delicious - I love duck and suggested it for our dinner but dh really does actually love turkey (must be the only person in the world that truly enjoys it).

OhTheRoses · 14/12/2019 23:39

I don't understand the multiple joints either. Ham under poultry gravy (bleurgh). Lamb with bread sauce and cranberry (bleurgh).

Roast beef needs a yummy red wine based gravy and horseradish - it needs never to share a plate with tyrkey and its trimmings.

Readthisearlier · 14/12/2019 23:42

We sometimes have beef and chicken because that's what we like. Each to their own. Meat is good.

Jinglebellissimo · 14/12/2019 23:43

@OhTheRoses tbf again - not my thing - but dh likes ham with roast dinner as did my mil (Irish - think it’s tradition?).

I don’t mind as life eating the leftover ham in a decent sandwich in the evening

VestaTilley · 14/12/2019 23:45

Prawn cocktail and salmon starter

Turkey crown or goose
Ham
Chipolatas in bacon
Stuffing
Gravy and/or port and orange sauce
Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce
Sprouts
Carrot and swede (mashed)
Parsnips
Red cabbage
Roast potatoes
Cauliflower cheese

Christmas pudding and cream

Cheese and biscuits and Christmas cake later on, maybe with a start being made on the goose and ham sandwiches...

HerRoyalFattyness · 14/12/2019 23:45

must be the only person in the world that truly enjoys it
I love turkey!
If people don't like it surely they eat something else? Confused I would t eat something I don't like just because of tradition.

Jinglebellissimo · 14/12/2019 23:50

@HerRoyalFattyness I don’t dislike it - but there a quite a few other meats which o prefer.

OP posts:
CryHavoc · 14/12/2019 23:54

Turkey. A crown this year, because we're only 5 for lunch.
Roast spuds, parsnips, and carrots.
Sprouts.
Mashed swede.
Pigs in blankets.
Chestnut stuffing.
One more veg - either runner beans or red cabbage.
Christmas pudding for everyone else, jelly for me (with a healthy slug of gin).

HoHoHoik · 14/12/2019 23:55

We are having:

Starter

  • pate with redcurrants and melba toast
or
  • melon and raspberries with a ginger sauce

Dinner

  • turkey
  • roast potatoes
  • mashed potatoes
  • mashed turnip (swede)
  • parsnips
  • carrots
  • broccoli
  • peas
  • yorkshire puddings
  • pigs in blankets
  • cranberry sauce
  • stuffing
  • gravy

Dessert

  • Christmas pudding with brandy sauce
or lets face it, AND
  • chocolate fudge cake

For DS who has ASD and food aversions:

  • chicken dippers
  • yorkshire pudding
  • broccoli
  • peas
  • Munch Bunch yoghurt
IamEarthymama · 14/12/2019 23:56

Vegetarian here so we have:

Delia's Mushroom and Chestnut en croute. I wheat flour, 1 gf pastry
Quorn Roast
Quorn cocktail sausages

Mashed potatoes
Roast potatoes
Carrots
Parsnips with Parmesan
Frozen peas
MUSHY PEAS 😉
Either cauliflower in cheese sauce or leeks in white sauce
And the best part, Sprouts we love them.
Sage and onion stuffing, my Nan's recipe

Gravy all gf
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Mustard
Horseradish
Apple sauce

This year a friend is staying who eats meat. We said bring anything you want but she loves our veggie main though she will bring pigs in blankets.

We make tons of vegetables as we love Boxing Day Fry Up as much as Christmas dinner and will send some home with our friend if she leaves before lunch.

We usually have cheese in the late evening and maybe trifle but have Christmas pudding with brandy sauce on Boxing Day

I haven't felt very festive but now I can't wait! Xmas Grin
🎄🎄🎄

IamEarthymama · 14/12/2019 23:57

Oh no! I forgot Yorkshire puddings too!

HoHoHoik · 14/12/2019 23:59

Boxing Day fry-up! One of my favourite Christmas meals, all the Christmas leftovers fried up with butter and eaten in pyjamas in front of the TV.

Heaven.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 15/12/2019 00:00

No starter as who needs the extra food.

Gammon cooked in cherry coke.
Small chicken crown as only one will eat it
stuffing usually made with butchers choice sausages
Roasties
Roasted veg (parsnips, carrots and baby onions)
One other boiled veg either peas or cabbage
Yorkies
Gravy
And this year I will do a few pigs in blankets as my sons girlfriend likes them.

Pudding will be something light like pavlova or key lime pie

NameChangedNoImagination · 15/12/2019 00:02

Why do people do mash, when you're already having roast potatoes? I've never had mash with Xmas dinner???

HoHoHoik · 15/12/2019 00:02

We have the starter because we have breakfast then nothing else until around 2 or 3pm when we have dinner, then that's it for the rest of the day. Our Christmas day breakfast is just normal breakfast, same as any other day, to try keep things relatively normal for DS.

HoHoHoik · 15/12/2019 00:03

Why do people do mash, when you're already having roast potatoes? I've never had mash with Xmas dinner???

DH and I like roasters, DC like mash, and we have guests who like either/or/both so I make both.

HerRoyalFattyness · 15/12/2019 00:05

NameChangedNoImagination

We are potato mad here. Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew WinkGrin

Readthisearlier · 15/12/2019 00:06

Because mashed potatoes and roast potatoes are completely different and there would be uproar if we didn't have both.

mathanxiety · 15/12/2019 00:07

We had turkey for Thanksgiving at the end of November and I can't face roasting another. Also, two DDs hate turkey.

Christmas Eve:
Lasagna or deep dish pizza, local specialty.
Yule log, with little meringue mushrooms by special request.
Pavlova with (1) ambitious option: fresh berries and a mascarpone filling (double Christmas Day tiramisu recipe) or (2) feck it option: ice cream. Very likely to be (2).

Breakfast/ brunch:
Cinnamon rolls.
Fried potatoes/hash with onions and peppers.
Sage sausage and rashers.
Scrambled eggs.
Smoked salmon and Irish brown bread.
Irish butter, and blackcurrant jam.

Dinner (evening):
Roast beef (and possibly Yorkshire puds this year).
Roast potatoes, parsnips and possibly also Brussels sprouts though I might do a mustard or balsamic sauce for them.
Green beans.
Carrots.
Sweet potatoes.
Homemade yeast rolls if no Yorkshire puds.
Homemade gravy.
Homemade sage and onion stuffing left over from Thanksgiving.
Homemade cranberry and orange sauce for the stuffing, also left over from Thanksgiving.

Dessert:
Pumpkin pie.
Pecan pie.
Tiramisu.
Mince pies.

snowball28 · 15/12/2019 00:09

All I care about is bread sauce and pigs in blankets! 😂

SidekickSally · 15/12/2019 00:09

Turkey crown
Sausage meat stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Roasters
Parsnips in maple syrup
Brussels, cabbage, broccoli
Carrot and swede mash
Bread sauce, cranberry sauce, gravy

Or vegan equivalent for DDs. M&S do great vegan stuff and DDs want to cook something posh.

No room for starter or pud but we do have Xmas pud with brandy break later, or left over Yule log from Xmas eve.

Love it!!

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/12/2019 00:14

We are vegan /veggie so probably a vegan lasagne or vegan burger with lots of veggies, roast potatoes and a tomato sauce.

Then either vegan ice cream or sorbet.

Do a few things to do with Christmas because of Dp and dc but I had my perfect Christmas Day last year.

We were en route to Las Vegas and missed our connecting flight so spent a night in an airport hotel.

I really enjoyed it because Christmas got missed.

My turn next year.
