Little mousey fuckers have eaten all the stocking fillers

One large Lindt bear
Four bags of chocolate coins
Two marzipan logs
One tube of smarties
Box of heroes
Tube of chocolate buttons
Tray of Reece’s treats
The cotton bag the coins were in

Little shredded bits of foil, plastic and paper all over the cupboard. Cat gives me a nonchalant look and goes back to sleep.

AIBU to fire the cat, go through all our food cupboards to check for recon mice and engage in all-our war with the little buggers?

That cat is FAR too beautiful to have to earn its keep. Did you ask DH to pick her up some fresh fish on his way back from the hardware store?

avocadoze · 14/12/2019 14:25

Bad, bad kitty.

@LeekMunchingSheepShagger I get my marzipan logs from Lidl. And the chocolate coins as they have chocolate banknotes in with the coins. I shall be paying them another visit soon!

It's clearly your fault, not the cat's. Have you been lax with your dispensing of Dreamies?

Fr0g · 14/12/2019 14:32

Definitely second the marzipan logs from Lidl - I had a rum and raisin one.
Like OP's, mine didn't make it to Christmas, but for different reasons!

Orchardgreen · 14/12/2019 14:36

The mousies will be so fat they will be lying in a chocolate torpor somewhere.

WeirdCatLady · 14/12/2019 14:36

OP I hope your dh can find an impressive array of anti-thievingdirtybastard mouse products.

@LeekMunchingSheepShagger Lakeland have some lovely Niederegger marzipan treats.... www.lakeland.co.uk/brands/niederegger/

Having recently engaged in war with my own mousey fuckers I can tell you that they love nutella and raisins in the traps. Humane traps were rubbish- caught 1 but the rest figured out how to steal the bait without being trapped. Snappy traps were unsuccessful and I was worried about gore. Electric traps (kill with a high voltage shock) were key to winning, although the most expensive.

stripeypillowcase · 14/12/2019 14:40

same happened to me when I stored food in the car as fridge too full...

danadas · 14/12/2019 14:41

We had an out and out mouse war this summer. I am still trying to use it to convince OH that it wouldn't have happened if we had two kittens. I will not show him this thread!

In the meantime, the electronic zappy mouse killers worked well. Nothing else got the little fuckers but these dealt with them quickly.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/12/2019 14:44

Did you also tell your DH to get some sealable storage boxes? It takes FOREVER to get rid of a mouse infestation, especially if you can't figure out how they're getting inside.

TheMustressMhor · 14/12/2019 14:49

Here is a picture of one of my cats, clearly thinking about mice.

Use what's left of the chocolate to bait your traps.
Wire wool around any pipes eg under sink and peppermint oil on cotton pads near entrance holes, covers for vents too.

Meckity1 · 14/12/2019 14:51

Mice love chocolate.

We are currently not owned by cats, but a few years ago a mouse ran across a room containing our three cats and got away I hope that makes you feel a little better.

I also recommend traps. You can get ones where you don't actually need to touch the remains to get rid. They are not very sensitive, though, and we caught a mouse eating bait (peanut butter) off the trap. Husband hit it with a hammer.

Once they have gone, I recommend the plug in mouse deterrents. We have those and are the only ones in the street without rat issues. If you plug them in while you still have mouse issues, though, the mice go weird. I still remember a mouse one side of the fire guard looking at the last of our cats, who was around 17, on the other side of the fire guard and the cat looking at me as if to say, 'I can't be having with this at my time of life.' The mouse didn't give a darn.

I have read this thread and now I am worried.

I bought some Hotel chocolat stuff on a three for a tenner offer, two sets though I only needed five as stocking fillers. I am now worried that the sixth pack which I had earmarked for an emergency present if required (unlikely) or post present wrapping treat for me(likely) could easily become the target of ruthless mice guerillas. We don't have a cat. Would it be wiser for me to eat it now rather than take the risk?

Ps that beautiful snooty cat is clearly used to being waited on paw and paw. I think you need to get in a cheap and cheeky second cat to do the mousing, or do it yourself as proper cat servants should.

MotorwayDiva · 14/12/2019 14:53

Isn't chocolate poisonous to mice..

We found one once next to a box to box of malteasers....

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 14/12/2019 14:53

Eat it now. You can't take the risk of mice getting it.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/12/2019 14:55

Your mistake is having a very regal Cat. Likely descended from posh, aristocratic stock and considers hunting the inferior little shits beneath him.

Get a one eyed stray. They'll deal with the fuckers!

Ylvamoon · 14/12/2019 14:57

Wait a minute... It's not the cat's fault! I'm sure her Ladyship has actually delegated the task of catching move to one of her human subjects!
OP- that's a massive slip on your part.

Ylvamoon · 14/12/2019 14:58

Oh no... should read mice!

PlasticPatty · 14/12/2019 14:58

Mouse-bastards! They love chocolate.

viques · 14/12/2019 15:08

Thankyou for those sage words TurkeysoupDrag On. that's what MN is all about, passing on the accumulated wisdom of the world. I will eat it toot sweet, or maybe during SCD tonight.

ClemDanFango · 14/12/2019 15:08

Only the glue traps worked for us.

katy1213 · 14/12/2019 15:09

Voice of experience: never, ever ignore scrabbling noises in the night. They are never your imagination!
Trouble is, your mice are unlikely to be hungry and might not fancy bait. This is no time for sentiment; sticky traps are your friend. (I'm also scared of losing a finger to snap traps.)
The plug-in things (about £20) definitely help as a deterrent for the future.
Sympathy!
