To think that it's still not cool to be Tory?

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 12:26

Not goady.
I'm over the election and prepared to carry on with my own form of protest against Boris but...
Conservatives still have a massive image problem to overcome. I looked up #tory on Instagram. Did I see masses of beautiful young instagramers proclaiming love for Boris or delighting at the election results? No.
Are there young celebrities who are openly endorsing the government and Conservatives? No.
Is Stormzy making an appearance with Boris at Glastonbury? No.

From the Lord Ashcroft poll;
Labour won more than half the vote among those turning out aged 18-24 (57%) and 25-34 (55%), with the Conservatives second in both groups. The Conservatives were ahead among those aged 45-54 (with 43%), 55-64 (with 49%) and 65+ (with 62%).

My verdict; this victory is a flash in pan success and a vote for Brexit not Boris.
In five years when a lot of tories have died it'll be a very different story.

It's never been cool to be Tory, the young have always been left-wing, no great revelations there.

Cool=young and reactionary, old git=learnt a bit about the way the world works, realises that the socialist dream isn't really the great sunlit uplands and discovers pragmatism.

If cool = calling people cunts on social media because of a difference of opinion, I'm happy to be a deeply uncool grown up.

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/12/2019 17:22

dim, young. I don't really care tbh. I can't think of anyone's opinion I care less about than someone on Mumsnet on a Saturday afternoon.

Beastly. Well, you obviously do care as you bothered to post on here. You sound like a child who being told they can’t do something says “don’t care, didn’t want to anyway, wah wah.”

Sopheeju · 14/12/2019 17:24

I agree

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 17:47

Oh we all care about being cool. We might not call it that, it might be respectable, being considered to be a 'decent' human being etc

It's all basically the same thing.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 14/12/2019 18:16

I don't think 'cool' and 'decent human being' are the same thing at all Fluffy, not in popular perception anyway.

Many people who vote Tory are decent human beings, this ridiculous idea that they're not is part of the problem.

An ideological difference between tax and spend politics and a bureaucracy-heavy administration or a prefernce for economic and governmental liberalism should not signify the decency of a person, nor their intellectual capacity. There are clever and hard-of-thinking people on both sides of this debate.

BorisForPM · 14/12/2019 18:18

But as more older Tories die (how lovely of you), more are growing older to take their place...

TabbyMumz · 14/12/2019 18:21

"do you personally know any under 25's who voted Tory?"
I know lots. My local college is full of conservative supporters.

BMW6 · 14/12/2019 18:25

OP you have shown yourself to be the very opposite of Cool.

horse4course · 14/12/2019 18:27

Coolness is about creativity, open mindedness, engagement with new ideas.

Classic Conservatism by definition is about preserving the status quo and being risk averse. It'll never be cool, it's. It meant to be. It's supposed to be about enduring values and looking beyond the current fashion.

There's a place for both. The current Conservative party isn't really conservative because they want to tear up the country to make something new. They're brutal.

ginghambox · 14/12/2019 18:29

Stormzy and Glastonbury are cool? Fuck off.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 14/12/2019 18:47

Glastonbury hasn't been cool since they built the fence.

MarshmallowMuggle · 14/12/2019 18:50

Yes, because nobody ever shifted to the right as they got older and actually started paying taxes Biscuit

TheNewSchmoo · 14/12/2019 19:03

A young labour supporter, being rude and refusing to accept that others are entitled to different opinions? Surely not.

Voted Green my arse, that's not what Stormzy told her to do.

MaButterface · 14/12/2019 19:15

I'm still laughing my arse off watching Lily Allen's video. Do I give a fuck about slebs? Not a bit. I am just waiting for the ageism to come from OP when she's decided to come back Grin

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 19:18

If anything I'm getting more left wing as I get older. I'm middle aged and boy do I pay tax!

The more I study the data, the more convinced I am.

Conservatism is far more ideological than you might think.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 19:22

Just went back to the truly charming opening post.

My verdict; this victory is a flash in pan success and a vote for Brexit not Boris.
In five years when a lot of tories have died it'll be a very different story.

If Boris keeps his promise to the Labour heartlands voters - and notice he made a point of heading up north today to thank them personally - and if the Labour Party goes into Momentum meltdown, this won't be a "flash-in-the-pan". It will be the beginning of at least ten years in power. Plenty of time to change the course of history.

I'm so pleased the OP set out to be "Not goady". I can't imagine what it would be like if she decided otherwise.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 14/12/2019 19:51

'Uncool older people, hurry up and die'.

Beacuse OP hasn't read The Lord of the Flies.

Justanotherlurker · 14/12/2019 20:01

The more I study the data, the more convinced I am.

OK, some semblance.

Conservatism is far more ideological than you might think.

Oh dear, i would suggest you are looking at very narrow data points.

It is no more ideological than what Corbyn was offering to suggest otherwise highlights you are not looking at any data.

ForalltheSaints · 14/12/2019 20:28

There has always been the phenomenon of the disguised Tory. Think of how the 1992 election turned out, and several since apart perhaps from 2017.

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 20:41

@Justanotherlurker

'Oh dear'?

Grin

Seriously? That's as bad as calling someone thick, dim or 'hard of thinking'.

Why embarrass yourself like that?

Ironically, it was a rather influential conservative woman who once pointed out that those who lack a proper argument, make it personal.

Anyway! I think most of us can agree that what we really want is a calm, orderly society with minimal crime and antisocial behaviour, good healthcare and education; a generally good quality of life.

There are places that are better at that, than us. We should learn from them. That's what I mean by data.

Why reinvent the wheel?

They're not conservative (with the notable exception of Japan which has a very different culture and it's own specific problems).

shinynewapplesonachristmastree · 14/12/2019 23:30

Sorry OP but that's hilarious! Perhaps attempting to be cool is why Labour has found itself unelectable. . Do you really think that politicians are supposed to be cool? I don't actually think you are serious here. I hope not anyway.

BMW6 · 14/12/2019 23:34

Cool people don't give the tiniest fuck whether or not they are Cool......

TARSCOUT · 14/12/2019 23:34

I voted Tory, am way too cool to demean myself chavving on insta with ya!

BadLad · 15/12/2019 00:03

*By the way, the youngest MP in the HoC is now Sara Britcliffe. She has just taken Hyndburn off Labour. She's 24 - and yes, she's a Conservative"

Labour MP for Nottingham East is 23.

scaryteacher · 15/12/2019 03:21

In five years when a lot of tories have died it'll be a very different story.

I've been voting Tory since I was 18 in 1984, and I'm not dead yet! Watching the news and seeing Red Robbo calling them out at BL yet again put me right off Labour in the 70s. Nothing I have seen since (except John Smith and he died) has made me think I should vote Labour.
