To think that it's still not cool to be Tory?

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 12:26

Not goady.
I'm over the election and prepared to carry on with my own form of protest against Boris but...
Conservatives still have a massive image problem to overcome. I looked up #tory on Instagram. Did I see masses of beautiful young instagramers proclaiming love for Boris or delighting at the election results? No.
Are there young celebrities who are openly endorsing the government and Conservatives? No.
Is Stormzy making an appearance with Boris at Glastonbury? No.

From the Lord Ashcroft poll;
Labour won more than half the vote among those turning out aged 18-24 (57%) and 25-34 (55%), with the Conservatives second in both groups. The Conservatives were ahead among those aged 45-54 (with 43%), 55-64 (with 49%) and 65+ (with 62%).

My verdict; this victory is a flash in pan success and a vote for Brexit not Boris.
In five years when a lot of tories have died it'll be a very different story.

Social media? 🤦‍♀️ Politicians need to actually engage with the electorate instead listening to who shouts the loudest on twitter.

Littletabbyocelot · 14/12/2019 13:12

Winston Churchill was Conservative so naturally he thought it was the right decision.

I'm in my 40s,educated, with a good job, a good education, mortgage etc. There is nothing niave or stupid about being ashamed to live in a first world country where such a huge proportion of children are born into poverty. I hope to be passionate about things that affect other people until I die.

Clavinova · 14/12/2019 13:12

Quite a few political commentators are saying that it will 10 years before Labour will be able to overturn the Tory's majority - not 5 years.

TSSDNCOP · 14/12/2019 13:14

From 1904 to 1924 Churchill was a member of the Liberal Party.

DeeZastris · 14/12/2019 13:15

Being passionate about something isn’t the same as something being considered cool. Which was what the op is arguing for.

I didn’t vote Tory but my vote wasn’t based on whether Lily Allen, Steve Coogan, Stormzy etc Voted for

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 13:16

@DeeZastris I'm really sorry but you are not everyone and social media is very important to a lot (not all) young people. For any party to dismiss it is foolish.

OP posts:
Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 13:17

@DeeZastris is anyone passionate about being conservative? Genuine question.

ClutterbuckFarm · 14/12/2019 13:17

If there's something you believe in which you are embarrassed to tell the rest of the world about, surely that should tell you something

It’s not about embarrassment. It’s more that I don’t want to be bullied or abused by Momentum rent-a-mob types who think anyone not voting Labour is essentially sub-human.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/12/2019 13:17

I didn’t vote Tory but you sound about 14. There aren’t many proper adults, who care whether or not their mp is a sleb or sleb endorsed on insta. Social media is already playing a massive role. Perhaps you should take a look at the shit, which the parties pulled to fool the public. Prime culprits seem to be the tories. Fake news bots etc. Then there’s the much awaited report into Russian interference in the referendum.

AlexaAmbidextra · 14/12/2019 13:20

OP. Keep hoping sweetie. 🙄

Jamiefraserskilt · 14/12/2019 13:20

I voted based on the experience I have of being governed by all three parties not on who endorses them.

yellowbananas123 · 14/12/2019 13:21

it will never be cool to Vote Tory.
Thats why so many Tories remained silent during the recent election.
One party (Labour) wants to spend all the money on all the stuff and help everyone and let all the people move here, build all the houses, make everything free for everyone etc
And the other party (Conservative) want to spend wisely and help people to help themselves.
It's not surprising that nobody wants to align themselves with the strong silent party instead of the generous give-give-give party.

keepingbees · 14/12/2019 13:22

You wouldn't be protesting against Boris, you would be protesting against democracy, which is definitely not cool.

DeeZastris · 14/12/2019 13:22

I’ve no idea if anyone is passionate about voting conservative. Confused I didn’t vote for them.

Yes social media is important to young people who by and large did vote. But Labour still lost (quite spectacularly) so calling people names for voting Tory doesn’t work - nobody ever changed their minds after being insulted - if anything it just makes their views more entrenched. Most people couldn’t give a shit if something is cool or not.

Labour needs to appeal to the whole electorate and for whatever reason it didn’t. And labour won’t win again if it thinks that the only way of doing this is to get 19yr old excited about voting.

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 13:23

Not too concerned about regarded as immature. Most 14 year olds have way more hope and vision than a room full of MNetters. Would your 14 year old self be proud of you?

OP posts:
Nighttimefreedom · 14/12/2019 13:24

Isn't it true that those in their 60s voting Tory now were teenagers in the 60s and much more liberal in their views? You become more conservative as you get older apparently.

DeeZastris · 14/12/2019 13:25

Couldn’t give a shit if my 14 yr old is proud of me or not. Emotional blackmail doesn’t work either. 🤦‍♀️

kittykatkitty · 14/12/2019 13:25

My 2 Dds voted Tory .

Baldcrusader · 14/12/2019 13:26

People keep silent for being Tory in the same way Trump voters also kept their heads down. It's just not worth the vitriol that will come their way.

Problem is too many in Labour just read the echo chambers out there and thought it's all going to be fine. Five seconds on the shop floors would have told them differently.

If only they'd used sat nav to actually visit their constituencies.

CrossingTheAlpsInOtley · 14/12/2019 13:28

When Hilary Clinton shared the stage with Jay Z and Beyoncé in her ill fated attempt to become President of the USA, a lot of people in America-fearful of losing their jobs etc. looked at her and thought, 'WTF does this woman care about me, about jobs in the steel belt' and down and out she went!

When a lot of people-traditional Labour voters-heard Corbyn et al going on about Woke issues, who should use what loo, and other assorted shite, ithad the same effect on voters. They thought what does all this champagne swilling, Islington arsed, Woke Crap have to do with life.

Labour did go on Instagram, they spoke to youth and it got them further back than they have ever been.

You sound a bit dim OP-whether that's the lovaeable dimness that comes with youth or just, well, dim, who knows because it sounds as if you're saying who has the best Instagram and celebrity endorsements should win.

If that really is what would win the 'youth
' vote, then we should put the age of voting up to thirty because they must be pretty thick.

Yetanotherwinter · 14/12/2019 13:31

You’re clearly in a minority feeling like this or he wouldn’t have won. Also how old are to be worrying about whether it’s cool. You sound very immature. I’m sick of loaded celebs preaching about money and telling me how I should live my life are care about the environment as they hop on a private plane. Jezza’s fans need to move on. The whole thing was a car crash for him.

foxychox · 14/12/2019 13:33

My 14 yr old self would be proud of how I voted as at that age as I had lived through the horrors of the trade union wrecked 1970s. Go away and do some research into what Momentum stand for and how it would have really affected the uk rather than messing about on instagram ...

tiggertogger · 14/12/2019 13:36

Tory voters don't die out you doughnut, as the population ages and accumulates assets it shifts to the right- so your right on leftie luvvies of today are your conservative voters of the future.

PhilSwagielka · 14/12/2019 13:37

Does anyone really care if a party is cool or not?

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 13:38

@CrossingTheAlpsInOtley dim, young. I don't really care tbh. I can't think of anyone's opinion I care less about than someone on Mumsnet on a Saturday afternoon. I'm off to spend my benefits on gluhwein in the Xmas market with my litter of immigrant children. I truly hope that you all have trans women giving you bed baths when you're in nursing homes. Thanks for fucking up the country!
