To think that it's still not cool to be Tory?

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 12:26

Not goady.
I'm over the election and prepared to carry on with my own form of protest against Boris but...
Conservatives still have a massive image problem to overcome. I looked up #tory on Instagram. Did I see masses of beautiful young instagramers proclaiming love for Boris or delighting at the election results? No.
Are there young celebrities who are openly endorsing the government and Conservatives? No.
Is Stormzy making an appearance with Boris at Glastonbury? No.

From the Lord Ashcroft poll;
Labour won more than half the vote among those turning out aged 18-24 (57%) and 25-34 (55%), with the Conservatives second in both groups. The Conservatives were ahead among those aged 45-54 (with 43%), 55-64 (with 49%) and 65+ (with 62%).

My verdict; this victory is a flash in pan success and a vote for Brexit not Boris.
In five years when a lot of tories have died it'll be a very different story.

Is this a serious thread??

Surfskatefamily · 14/12/2019 12:52

I didnt vote Tory to be cool 😎 voted Tory for best of my country and family ✌

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 12:53

@TSSDNCOP these are bad times, and whose been running the country for the last nine years?

TSSDNCOP · 14/12/2019 12:54

Was there a moment worse than Cool Britannia? If he could go back in time sure
Noel Gallagher must cringe.

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 12:54

For what it's worth I voted Green because I care about the REAL future.

Crass12 · 14/12/2019 12:55

In 5 years time when a lot of Tories have died?? They said the same thing about all the elderly voting for Brexit at the time would now be dead....The story is very much the same...Priority in ones life changes as we grow older. It’s not a flash in the pan. Labour need a leader who transcends ages. I’ve voted for Labour in the past and may do again in the future. In another 5 years you too may feel differently

mindproject · 14/12/2019 12:55

You have to be old, rich or stupid to be a Tory - so not cool.

AuntSpiker · 14/12/2019 12:55

Yes I do think coolness matters.

Grin I can only assume you're being disingenuous. Either that or monumentally daft. We're talking the future of our country here, whichever way you vote, coolness should be the very last thing to influence where you put your cross.

Bluntness100 · 14/12/2019 12:55

Lol who cares if it's cool or some celeb endorses them? 🤣

As the older ones die off op, the younger ones grow up and lose the gullibility and stop caring if celebs like stormzy promote them and move to tory,

Seriously silliest thread of the week award and that's saying something this week.

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 12:55

@TSSDNCOP yes, what a shit time we had celebrating working class people and their achievements and valuing the arts.

Littletabbyocelot · 14/12/2019 12:56

There's going to be a difference in passion because of the impact. I'm angry about the Tory win because I'm scared my sister and her family will be homeless as a direct result, because of the huge problems at my child's school and because I worked directly with vulnerable people impacted by austerity until my mental health couldn't take one more heartbreaking story.

Had I voted Tory and Labour got in I'd be what, wondering whether my savings account would miss £8.50 a month?

TSSDNCOP · 14/12/2019 12:57

The Conservatives, without a clear majority. That labour could’ve wiped out and didn’t.

Sometimes the other guys win, although this is a hollow victory i believe not a time for gloating.

safariboot · 14/12/2019 12:57

The Conservatives still haven't shaken off the reputation of "the nasty party". Time will tell whether BJ can change that. Young people are becoming more entrepreneurial, the Conservatives could benefit from that I think, if they stop hurting the poor and disabled.

MidnightCircus · 14/12/2019 12:59

Just because its fashionable to shout about being caring, selfless, not scum, not racist etc doesn't mean its right. That's why you don't see Tories being touted about, it simply is not necessary as we know the social media shouting is just militant feel-good about yourself, superior shouting. Also known as bollocks.

TheGardenFairy · 14/12/2019 13:00

You voted green, rave about Stormzy and Insta and call Tories uncool 😂😂😂

People who are old enough to vote usually make sensible decisions about who they vote for. Nobody over the age of teenager prioritise Stormzy, Insta and the green party over real life decisions.

Has school broken up already?

Cattenberg · 14/12/2019 13:01

Most politicians aren’t cool, to be fair. It’s quite hard to be a “cool politician” in the same way that it’s hard to be a “trendy vicar”.

And yet, punching down will never be something to cheer about, so there will always be shy Tories.

David defeats Goliath - Yay! Go David!

Goliath defeats David - same old, same old.

Skinnychip · 14/12/2019 13:01

I didn't vote conservative, I'm not cool and I've never been on instagram but if I did , I'm not sure I'd immediately be looking for who celebrities or "the beautiful people" vote for.
It's all very well having celeb endorsement but I think I would (as an uncool 40 year old woman ) be more influenced by my peers and people I know in RL, or those more knowledgeable about politics.
A millionaire celebrity has very little day to day experience the same as me. The things that I might be worried about will be completely different from their concerns.
And while we're here some people like to be in the cool squad but are actually pretty hypocritical about it. Think of all the celebs that like to preach on climate change while using private jets, helicopters and owning several not very eco friendly cars....

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 14/12/2019 13:04

"If a man is 20 & not a Liberal then he has no heart. If a man is 40 & not a Conservative then he has no brain."
Sir Winston Churchill

People's priorities alter as they get older, jobs, mortgages, children etc.

Chloemol · 14/12/2019 13:04

Actually you are being goady

icannotremember · 14/12/2019 13:05

It’s not to do with being cool but what the majority of the country vote for because they want.

In that case we are going to have to implement PR or some version of it. Not that I see that being something the Tories or even Labour would get behind. They like fptp, they can get massive majorities with a minority of votes!

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 13:05

What about Alessandria Ocasio Cortez? Social media was integral to her election as NY representative. I'm sure she was dismissed too, but she managed to get the young and older vote. I hope we get our own version soon.

OP posts:
Chloemol · 14/12/2019 13:08

And who gives a shit that a ‘celebrity’ hasn’t endorsed them. Labour can keep Lily, Stormsy, Steve, Hugh et al. i don’t see them openIng their houses for the homeless etc. Just crying on twitter about the injustice of the result of a democratic election

Cattenberg · 14/12/2019 13:09

Not that canard again.

I’m far more dismayed by a Tory victory now that I have a child. It’s her future I lose sleep over, not mine. I also have a mortgage, but that’s only relevant in that it makes it harder to emigrate and start again.

Oh, to be 19 again, and to be able to emigrate to the Netherlands with two weeks’ notice, just because I fancied a change.

Cattenberg · 14/12/2019 13:10

I was referring to the Churchill quote, but I’m a slow typist.

AuntSpiker · 14/12/2019 13:10

Actually I agree with Chloemol, you're being goady.
