To think that it's still not cool to be Tory?

Not goady.
I'm over the election and prepared to carry on with my own form of protest against Boris but...
Conservatives still have a massive image problem to overcome. I looked up #tory on Instagram. Did I see masses of beautiful young instagramers proclaiming love for Boris or delighting at the election results? No.
Are there young celebrities who are openly endorsing the government and Conservatives? No.
Is Stormzy making an appearance with Boris at Glastonbury? No.

From the Lord Ashcroft poll;
Labour won more than half the vote among those turning out aged 18-24 (57%) and 25-34 (55%), with the Conservatives second in both groups. The Conservatives were ahead among those aged 45-54 (with 43%), 55-64 (with 49%) and 65+ (with 62%).

My verdict; this victory is a flash in pan success and a vote for Brexit not Boris.
In five years when a lot of tories have died it'll be a very different story.

Also, why do people act like the right are never abusive?

If you are voting for a party because they are 'cool' and have the right celebrity endorsements then I'm not sure you should be voting at all.

I don't know anyone who is ashamed of voting Tory but I do know lots of Tory voters who are sick to the back teeth of being called racist, stupid, uncaring, vile..... etc when they are none of these which is one reason they aren't as vocal.

Ha ha ha ha lol. You’re trying to come across as all so wise. Do come back to these posts in 20 years time and realise just how silly you sound. Trying to preach to this demographic of mainly highly educated and intelligent middle aged women with a wealth of experience you could not begin to comprehend is not going to go the way you want. My 14 yo self would be very proud of me for many reasons.

As for having to hide who you voted for if you voted Tory speaking volumes. No it doesn’t. Society today is stepping into the realms of the thought police. Not just in politics but in many areas. In the days of yore working class people were loud and proud to vote Tory. Perhaps you should take a little time to study history.

Mick Jagger famously said, "My heart is Labour but my money's Tory".

I believe he was considered cool once.

Noel Gallagher, died-in-the-wool Labour, called Jeremy Corbyn "a f----g disgrace".

I believe he was thought cool at one time too.

Strangely, neither one ever had any influence how I voted.

Celebrity endorsement would put me off tbh.
What an awful post.

Ah I seeeee trans women Comment. You’re on a woke mission. Part of the thought police. Toodleoo. Off you pop.

Report
DeeZastris · 14/12/2019 13:46

Oh - it was a woke mission. No one outside or the student twittersphere gives a tiny shit about identity politics. It’s viewed as utter guff by the majority of the electorate. But if labour want to remain ideologically pure instead of winning elections I guess it’s their choice.

I think OP might have done a flounce.

Anyone else seen this video?

It's pure comedy gold. Shouty Young Labour Activist summarises the cool approach to discussing politics: shout over everyone and then be amazed when no one takes any notice of you and makes up their own mind in the privacy of the polling booth.

I don’t know nor care about cool. But I am wondering whether it will be possible for people generally to openly admit to being a Tory voter. You certainly wouldn’t do that in Scotland.

People who are in support of the rise of the far right (in our Country, the USA and some European Countries at the moment) are quite rightly too ashamed of their views to want to proclaim them too publicly.

Not too concerned about regarded as immature. Most 14 year olds have way more hope and vision than a room full of MNetters. Would your 14 year old self be proud of you?

When I was 14 I was living in a politically engaged, left leaning ( father was very involved in party work - Labour, that is) family . The Labour party wasn’t a shit show then, it was a rational, compassionate party - not the one we know now being ruled by Militant Tendency oops no, I mean Momentum. My father knew Jeremy Corbyn then and was very wary of his views and his manipulative manner.

I was taught to question and I was taught to look behind the promises. So, yes, my 14 year old self, who had been brought up to view the Tories as the enemy would have been surprised but would also have had a less naive view than you, OP, on Jeremy ‘down wiv da kids’ Corbyn .

i don't give a flying duck for being cool i voted what i believe in, getting brexit sorted and keeping a certain party with people who keep company with terrorists out.
blair was okay until he took us into iraq then it went right down hill.
fewest seats since the 1930's for labour ? that speaks volumes in itself.

I don’t think death is going to make a difference. As people get older and get jobs, buy house, have children, start businesses, invest, retire etc the incentives to vote Tory increase. People are also less likely to vote for something because it’s fashionable.

By the way, the youngest MP in the HoC is now Sara Britcliffe. She has just taken Hyndburn off Labour. She's 24 - and yes, she's a Conservative.

That's pretty cool.

You sound very thick, op. People vote their hearts and conscience. Only someone with little intelligence is influenced by celebs and Instagram models.

Exactly this. Which is why I'm always baffled when people say "oh, Tory voters will all be dead soon and the right party will get into power then."
Not how it works.

OP

When you talk about coolness, I can’t tell if you mean the importance of it in terms of party image or in terms of what people think of you.

Of course any political campaigner has to plan for social media but AFAICS all parties did so?

If I may ask, I’m curious to know what you think about individuals who don’t do social media.
