To think that it's still not cool to be Tory?

Beadyohfeedme · 14/12/2019 12:26

Not goady.
I'm over the election and prepared to carry on with my own form of protest against Boris but...
Conservatives still have a massive image problem to overcome. I looked up #tory on Instagram. Did I see masses of beautiful young instagramers proclaiming love for Boris or delighting at the election results? No.
Are there young celebrities who are openly endorsing the government and Conservatives? No.
Is Stormzy making an appearance with Boris at Glastonbury? No.

From the Lord Ashcroft poll;
Labour won more than half the vote among those turning out aged 18-24 (57%) and 25-34 (55%), with the Conservatives second in both groups. The Conservatives were ahead among those aged 45-54 (with 43%), 55-64 (with 49%) and 65+ (with 62%).

My verdict; this victory is a flash in pan success and a vote for Brexit not Boris.
In five years when a lot of tories have died it'll be a very different story.

Are there young celebrities who are openly endorsing the government and Conservatives?

Who seriously gives a fuck, they are nonentities.

It's cool that the Conservatives prevented Corbyn from plunging this country into a financial shithole for years to come. It's also cool that Momentum can't drag us into a marxist state.

And since you asked, I am extremely passionate and proud that I vote for the Conservatives. The first time I voted (it was 21 back then, not 18) to this week, I have always voted Conservatives, that's over fifty years.

Aww I missed the flounce Sad

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 14:44

Aww I missed the flounce

Don't worry, there'll be plenty more doing the same.

I think Momentum is in full Hiroo Onoda mode.

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 14:46

Why do people persist in calling others 'thick' on here?

The most only person that it reflects on is yourself, @SecretWitch

I don't understand the point in your post. You've hopelessly misunderstood the OP - you also demonstrate little understanding of the nuances of advertising.

Just a tad ironic, really. Are you going to call me thick too? Or do you have something to contribute?

SecretWitch · 14/12/2019 14:59

@thefluffysideofgrey. How odd that you cannot understand that someone depending on the “coolness” of influencers to decide their vote is thick. You must be sad to have so little self awareness.

Whizbang · 14/12/2019 15:05

You fail to understand that “coolness” is an enormously dim criteria upon which to base political decisions. Thankfully the U.K. electorate at large did not vote on such a vapid basis.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 15:12

On the plus side, "Bye Jeremy Corbyn" works just as well with the same tune.

Whizbang · 14/12/2019 15:15

GrinGrinLove it Singing Lily!

Altogether now...Byeeeee Jeremy Corbyn

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 15:15

Give you enough rope...

NameChangeNugget · 14/12/2019 15:18

I’d rather decent policies than coolness

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 14/12/2019 15:22

If there's something you believe in which you are embarrassed to tell the rest of the world about, surely that should tell you something

Being quiet is not the same as being embarrassed.

I feel no need to shout my political views. I expect my friends to choose who they vote for by paying attention to the candidates, the policies, history, common sense, their own values. Just like I do.

Why would my views on, say, housing, be relevant? Why would it matter what Stormzy thinks? Neither Stormzy nor I are standing for election.

But maybe you feel you are being judged. Probably by your insta mates and your shouty mates, so being cool matters, saying the same as them matters, being seen to say the right things matters. Maybe you vote based on peer pressure to be in with the in crowd.

That's not how I choose.

I will listen to people who have knowledge, I will engage my brain, I will come to a decision and then I will act upon that decision. I won't try to bully anyone else. I won't plaster it over instagram, facebook, my house or anywhere else.

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 14/12/2019 15:26

I can't think of anyone's opinion I care less about than someone on Mumsnet on a Saturday afternoon.
That would be you then.

I truly hope that you all have trans women giving you bed baths when you're in nursing homes.
I see you think being given a bed bath by a transwoman would be a bad thing for an elderly woman and is thus a good curse on our house. Duly noted. I agree with you on that as it happens.

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 15:36

Of course everyone on this this thread is far too intelligent to influenced by anything other than policy...

However, social media does influence how chunks of society think. It's the most powerful advertising medium there is at the moment. Bit disingenuous to insist otherwise.

It can be very subtle though. More so than you'd imagine.

For example, there is a picture of Dianne Abbot with odd shoes. It's photoshopped but i've still seems otherwise intelligent-sounding people on here referring to it.

Same with the picture of the boy on the hospital floor- there was a viral post about how it was faked. That post was actually fake but it still did the rounds and convinced people.

This stuff works. Both sides do it, left and right.

Hence Cambridge Analytica

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 15:38

And calling people dim or thick really, really devalues everything you say.

I've never seen it used by someone who had something intelligent to contribute. Why would you?

Barnseyboyo · 14/12/2019 15:53

God, they’re scraping the barrel now.

I consider it more embarrassing to be a Labour activist now. They’re not Labour voters anymore, they’re activists. It’s the only name that is apt for the way they are going on.

You do realise that thousands, if not millions, of poor people would’ve voted for conservatives on this election, don’t you? I know loads of young people who voted conservatives as well. The days of Tory voters being old and rich are long gone.

Get out of your echo chamber and you will see this.

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 16:30

@Barnseyboyo

What, all ten million of us?

Ten million activists? Really? Come on, that's daft.

There were fourteen million Tory votes.

Six million voted for other parties.

More people voted for non-Tory parties than for the Tories themselves.

Something to consider.

Justanotherlurker · 14/12/2019 16:40

For example, there is a picture of Dianne Abbot with odd shoes. It's photoshopped but i've still seems otherwise intelligent-sounding people on here referring to it.

No it was quickly spread by online activists to make out it was photoshopped, the original tweet had the same image

You have fallen for the exact thing you blame others for, but because its your tribe you don't see it.

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 16:43

There you go!

The shit is still running.

Justanotherlurker · 14/12/2019 16:46

Ten million activists? Really? Come on, that's daft.

Not OP, but there is online activists for Momentum that target social media platforms, it's done under the guise of grass routes support, ex tory voting labour, or just out and out campaign mode.

More people voted for non-Tory parties than for the Tories themselves.

Thats irrelevant, all parties new the rules before the election, and if Labour had won then I doubt this would even be mentioned.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 16:47

Never let inconvenient truths get in the way of a good conspiracy theory....Grin

thefluffysideofgrey · 14/12/2019 16:53

It's extremely relevant.

It's relevant to the Tory 'we won' swagger.

We live in a democracy. The idea being, that parliament holds representatives with a mixture of views and they debate it out. There are also petitions, GP surgeries, select committees, lobbiests and other campaign groups.

The majority of the voting public who did not vote Tory will not just vanish. We will make our voices heard through other, entirely democratic means.

A majority in our FPTP system does not equal a Tory one party state. Though you'd think it was at the moment.

TheDarkPassenger · 14/12/2019 16:55

29 and voted Tory. Absolutely the uncoolest person you will ever meet and the least bothered about being cool. I don’t really think adults are swayed by what’s ‘cool’ are they?

orcaaa · 14/12/2019 17:00

Stormzy? Christ,

Mominatrix · 14/12/2019 17:00

I'm really sorry but you are not everyone and social media is very important to a lot (not all) young people. For any party to dismiss it is foolish.

I have a teenager for whom social media is important. He does, however, have enough media savvy to be sceptical of the things he is bombarded with and also enough intelligence to not allow an overpaid, overprivileged celebrity tell him how to vote.

GCAcademic · 14/12/2019 17:02

Why would I give a fuck about being cool? My requirements for a political party do not include them having a leader who I can take pouty fishface selfies with.

Tanith · 14/12/2019 17:08

But it's not the Tory party any longer. Katie Hopkins told Sayeeda Warsi it's their party:

"Your party? Hold on a minute sister. I think you will find it’s OUR party now.
Britain has Boris and a blue collar army.
Nationalism is back. British people first."
