To have cried!

I'm 19. DS is 18 months.

I live with DP & DS. I work hard, I have 2 jobs. DP works too. So, no we don't just sit on our arses, but we still need UC help to pay the bills. I want(ed) to train and work in the NHS. I'm also interested in politics.

So yeah, when I woke up this morning and saw the election result I cried. Austerity is very real, it's not a joke or a fictional story. With the way it is right now, I cannot afford an education. I cannot afford to study for a career. I'm stuck where I am.

Sadder still, others have it far worse. There are children in poverty, a homelessness crisis, the NHS is crumbling when people need it more than ever. I can respect democracy. I can respect the vote. But I have to ask, for people like me - what now?Sad

We put a man on the moon, hearts, not a pie in the sky. I hardly think the creation of an education service is beyond the wit of woman here.

OrangeTwirl · 13/12/2019 14:06

Those of you who are quick to jump on The Tory Govt. for students having to pay tuition fees and student loans....you are aware that it was Tony Blair who introduced tuition fees and student loans right? 🤦‍♀️

InsertFunnyUsername · 13/12/2019 14:06

My sympathies are definitely not dwindling for the poor! People that are desperate for change are perfect targets for politicians.

StinkyWizleteets · 13/12/2019 14:07

OP it’s not easy studying with a child but I recommend starting before your child Goes to school as nursery hours are far better for studying that school hours and you end up paying out loads for before and after school care. It is a big leap to make but there are lots of supports available and you won’t be much worse off unless you earn well right now. A few years of scrimping for your education can make a big difference further down the line but it’s scary making that leap. Now is the perfect time to research the funding available to you and childcare options.

Don’t listen to the fannies upthread- they’ve got their brace faces on cos a racist fuckwit won the election & now believe they can attack anyone who doesn’t have an easy life like they do. Good luck

Thestinkycheeseman · 13/12/2019 14:08

But I don't have an easy life!
I just don't winge and blame everyone else for my own life choices

Lifecraft · 13/12/2019 14:09

my sympathies with the poor and downtrodden are wearing rather thin

I'm ashamed to say it, but I know what you mean 😬. All the Tory voters being interviewed today do not look rich and are in deprived areas. I won't say it, but you know...those festive roast birds and the birth of Jesus / pagan winter festival.

Exactly. I mean Blyth ffs! Fucking Blyth went Tory! BLYTH!!! I've been to Blyth, and Belgravia it ain't.

sauvignonblancplz · 13/12/2019 14:09

Student loans that didn’t cripple you when they were paid back. Tories increased the fees from £3,000 to £9,000 a term!!
They also removed many bursaries and grants from nurses. Are you being serious with this?
Labours initiative was to make it accessible for anyone who wanted to to go to Uni. It’s flawed but it tried to create an equal playing field. They funded thousands and thousands of places for young people who couldn’t meet the threshold to pay.
LABOUR

mynameiswah · 13/12/2019 14:10

*This is why you should've made better choices, frankly.

Suck it up. Welcome to the world. Grow up!*

Conservatives aren't kind. Expect more of this sort of shitty attitude in the near future.

heartsonacake · 13/12/2019 14:10

churchandstate Oh yes, they have the ability. They just wouldn’t do it.

Labour is like the school election “...and I say no homework, and pizza for lunch every day, and no uniform on Fridays...”

They promised the earth and thankfully we all knew they would never have done it and therefore didn’t vote for them.

Elphame · 13/12/2019 14:10

Ah yes - student loans.

Introduced by Tony Blair I believe...

Sagradafamiliar · 13/12/2019 14:11

The election result becomes more understandable once you read these replies. Fucking. Hell.

OP, I hear you Thanks

addictedtochoc · 13/12/2019 14:11

@churchandstate this is where everyones opinion of how much the government should contribute will differ. I personally do not agree with the labour pledge of lifelong education opportunities at no cost as I do not believe it is good use of money. Yes, everyone is entitled to an education and should be supported in doing so but I feel there has to be a cap after which individuals self fund.
I do very strongly believe nurse and midwife bursaries need to be reintroduced though and likewise with other professions that are hard to recruit into

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 14:11

Thestinkycheeseman

Do you not accept that the playing field is rigged against young people growing up in deprived circumstances? Do you honestly believe that a young person brought up with no garden in a council flat and a bedroom shared with four siblings has the same chance of becoming an Olympian as a child sent to Eton?

northbacchus · 13/12/2019 14:12

OP, have you looked into the OU to see if there is anything that interests you? Your fees would be paid by student finance, and I believe there are means tested bursaries for people on UC & similar.

You could even look into Access modules.

Right now you are disappointed by the election results, and I'm sorry that you've lost hope, but how you act now is your prerogative! It might even be the making of you.

Justaboy · 13/12/2019 14:12

Cried with joy that we're not going to be run by a commie:)..

You've never known a good socialist goverment then?.

Now get used to the real big world and work hard and you'll hopefully do well and stop moaning please!.

sauvignonblancplz · 13/12/2019 14:13

Why should it have a cut off point?

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 14:13

I personally do not agree with the labour pledge of lifelong education opportunities at no cost as I do not believe it is good use of money.

Help.

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 14:14

heartsonacake

Why don’t you think they would have done it?

dreamingofsun · 13/12/2019 14:14

churchandstate - at the risk of sounding nasty, shouldnt the parents take some responsibility for the situation they find themselves in. We both work in well paid jobs but i still wouldnt have five children as i know i couldnt support them properly myself - either financially or emotionally

InsertFunnyUsername · 13/12/2019 14:14

Out come all the Boris and Donalds. Depressing.

KindnessCrusader · 13/12/2019 14:15

There is literally ALWAYS a way out. You just need to put the effort it.

^Absolutely zero empathy. None. I despair.

BeatriceTheBeast · 13/12/2019 14:15

@OrangeTwirl

Tories increased tuition fees and scrapped bursaries for nurses. Completely moved the goalposts for those seeking to train in nursing. So, thanks for the 'education' and all, but my opinion remains unchanged.

Els1e · 13/12/2019 14:15

What do you want to do in the NHS? As others are saying there could be options regardless of who lives at No 10.

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 14:16

dreamingofsun

That doesn’t help the children, does it?

Again, I can only repeat my question: what is government for? I think it’s there to help people.

Thestinkycheeseman · 13/12/2019 14:17

@churchandstate I was brought up on a council estate by a single parent who was on benefits.
I had a child at 19.
I left school with no qualifications and was totally lost.
I also saw the life that my mother had and was determined I would not have that life.
I worked every shit job going and studied in between jobs.
I took responsibility for mine and my child's life.
I don't earn a huge amount of money now but we get by .
