If Scotland becomes independent

If Scotland becomes independent how long until a general election would be called and what do you predict the results would be? Do you think SNP would eventually disband?

I'm over 50, come from Nicola's home town and desperately want Scotland to be independent.

Also 50 plus and want Independence

happycamper11 · 13/12/2019 21:32

Everyone who wants independence voted SNP, but not everyone who voted SNP wants independence.

Yet on this small thread alone 2 people have stated they voted labour but want independence. Where are you getting these definitive facts?

HirplesWithHaggis · 13/12/2019 22:47

Also over 50, and very much want independence.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 13/12/2019 23:05

In the 2014 referendum she got 1.6 mil votes to leave
In the 2015 election she got 1.4 mil votes
Yesterday she got 1.2 mil votes

How is that an overwhelming mandate for another referendum?

astralweaks · 13/12/2019 23:25

What has happened in England, the Conservative majority, has not affected me to any great extent. I am proud that my country gave the SNP a resoundingly positive signal to move forward on independence. I too am desperate for the time to arrive.

Aurignacian · 13/12/2019 23:30

Over 50 and want independence

Frozenfan2019 · 13/12/2019 23:31

The fact that Johnson gets to decide whether or not the Scottish can vote for their own independence seems wrong.

I think when we leave they would be absolute fools not to become independent and join the EU and let's face it the Scots have shown themselves not to be fools in election after election while us English fuck about voting for right wing idiots and racists misoginysts. If he won't let them vote then they should be fighting for their rights. It's horrendously undemocratic if we leave the EU as it's clear Scotland didn't vote for that.

Darkbendis · 13/12/2019 23:37

Not yet 50 (but will be in a few years) and I want Independence for Scotland.

HirplesWithHaggis · 13/12/2019 23:58

Well yes, absolutely. A union of equals where one needs permission to ask itself a question? Fine, I expect WM etc to fight for a No (because they know how valuable we are) but we're not even allowed to ask?

UK didn't need to ask the EU if we could have a Brexit referendum.

RadicalFern · 14/12/2019 00:04

I'm well under 50 and do not want Scottish independence. Also, those who do are kidding themselves if they think the EU will be willing to take us in.

TARSCOUT · 14/12/2019 00:18

Under 50, still no and totally disgusted she wants another indy ref.

Thehagonthehillwithtinsel · 14/12/2019 00:30

If they got independence where would their money come from and if it happens after we leave the EU surely they would then have to negotiate their own trade deals as GB ones would not exist for them. That could throw up boarder issues.
And yes the SNP got anig majority in Scotland but to be honest if your other options were Johnson,Corbin or Swindon it's not that much of a suprise.

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 14/12/2019 00:43

I am no fan of Jo Swinson, but Nicola Sturgeon's mannerless exultation over her defeat has destroyed any pretence she might have made of being a decent human being.

Election2019 · 14/12/2019 00:47

If Scotland does becomes independent, it will be after the UK has left the EU. Will it really be better off? Would the remaining UK be better off?

june2007 · 14/12/2019 00:48

My sis is in Scotland as she pointed out, people voted snp not because they want Scotland independent but because they din,t want conservative/ or the alternative. My sis lives in Scotland another went to uni there how would that work for an English person if they went independednt. And would Scotish people then have to pay the same fees as foreigners for the NHS in England or uni? (Don,t see it myself.)

TooTrueToBeGood · 14/12/2019 01:07

Boris has said no to another indyref while he is PM so it's not going to happen.

Aye right. He fails to appreciate that the more some Etonian Tory wanker tries to dictate to the Scots the more determined we will become. He is playing right into the SNP's hands.

Have heard that quite a lot voted snp to prevent Brexit

Quite a lot also voted SNP because they are sick to the back teeth of Westminster politics and don't believe either of the two major parties deserved their vote.

Or Nicola's natural joy at her candidate winning?

Your sister knows the motivation of every SNP voter? Scottish students already pay uni fees to study in England.

StoneofDestiny · 14/12/2019 01:22

@pinkstripeycat yes I want Scottish Independence and am over 50

ItsNearlyMorning · 14/12/2019 01:23

Even if Scotland becomes independent, the EU will not allow them in.
One reason is the Catalan situation in Spain.
They have literally been fighting for independence for decades and if the EU excepts an independent Scotland then the people of Catalan will ramp up their efforts.
The Spanish will block it at every turn , they've said so and they have a lot of EU allies.
Personally I don't care if Scotland is independent, I'm not Scottish and if that's what the people want then what business is it if mine but Westminster has other things on its agenda.
Lots of things that have to be sorted out as a matter of urgency.
They aren't going to waste time hearing a new referendum bill or risk yet another general election.
They won't allow a referendum during Johnson's term.
I'm curious though how Scotland would form an independent military so quickly?
How are they going to afford all of the training and ships / tanks / planes etc
How will they enforce boarders ?
It's not so hard for NI to gets independence because it would become a united ireland and of course Eire already has that infrastructure in place.
Now Sinn Fein have the majority in NI, it's plausible that NI will become independent before Scotland and of course by default of joining Eire go straight into the EU.

TomPinch · 14/12/2019 01:34

Scotland has the right to self-determination.

It doesn't follow that it has the right to hold referendum after referendum, causing economic turmoil, until a certain group get the result they want. Scotland, unlike the UK (re the EU) isn't a sovereign state and hasn't been one since 1707. It certainly doesn't have the legal right to hold referenda at the time its administration chooses, and it doesn't have the moral right either because the effects would go beyond Scotland.

The same applies to England.

TomPinch · 14/12/2019 01:38

I know some scots have anti English feeling, but I am shocked at the nastiness to Scots not just on social media but in Westminster itself.

Without defending this in any way, what goes around comes around. I lived in Scotland in the 1990s.

HirplesWithHaggis · 14/12/2019 02:01

ItsNearlyMorning, the constitutional issues involved in Catalonia v Spain, and Scotland v rUK, are utterly different. Spain has acknowledged this and sees no reason an independent Scotland could not rejoin the EU, provided that independence is gained through legal means eg a WM-approved referendum. Rest of the EU are much the same, if we meet requirements (that have nothing to do with invented deficits) we're welcome, and there is no queue.
