If Scotland becomes independent

If Scotland becomes independent how long until a general election would be called and what do you predict the results would be? Do you think SNP would eventually disband?

Scotland will earn money in the same way it does now

Pinkbonbon · 13/12/2019 19:56

Whisky industry. Gin industry is taking off as well. Tourism. Technically we should get north see oil too as it is off our coast but I don't see England just handing that over lol.

Always confuses me when people are like 'how would Scotland survive?'. There countries much smaller than Scotland with less resources that are thriving.

English government brainwashing is like an abusive partner saying 'give me all your shit and I'll delegate a small amount of it back to you, forever. Because you'd never make it on your own. Besides, if you leave you'll owe me and all our friends money'. Yeah? Worth it, dickhead.

Whatapalaverama · 13/12/2019 19:57

Have heard that quite a lot voted snp to prevent Brexit, with the intention of voting no in any indyref. Essentially, don't think it will happen.

Lol, just like the EU and the UK really, huh? Grin

Pikehau · 13/12/2019 19:59

Ok so hows that. As I thought they got money from parliament and also the financial services industry would suffer. Companies might start registering in england and taxes from them flow out.

Couple that with an ageing population, social spending etc.... policies on free university prescriptions etc

Genuinely interested and to be clear I am more left than right wing.

Genuinely interested.

How would that work? SNP have no control over brexit.

@needsomehelptoday because SNP isn't Conservative, and is most likely to keep Conservative out in most constituencies.

Pinkbonbon · 13/12/2019 20:06

You don't see the EU stealing the UK's resources though. EU is more like a big, nosey brother. Scotland likes it because it helps them out, including protecting somewhat from big brother England, who keeps stealing their lunch money.

Duckyneedsaclean · 13/12/2019 20:07

@Pinkbonbon except the fish..

Instagrump · 13/12/2019 20:11

@Pinkbonbon 40% of Scottish Whisky distilleries are owned by foreign companies. Whyte & Mackay for example are owned by an Indian chap. And of the remaining 60% still owned by my the UK, over half are owned by companies in England. So in reality, only 30% of all Scottish Whisky companies are actually owned by Scots. Not exactly something people want to be pinning their funding hopes on.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/12/2019 20:11

Nicola Sturgeon wants Westminster to respect the will of the Scottish people. In my view, this is rank hypocrisy, since she refuses to respect the will of the Scottish people as expressed - decisively - in the Independence referendum.

YappityYapYap · 13/12/2019 20:13

Yeah they want to hang on to us so much because we're a 'financial burden' paying more tax than anywhere else in the UK (21% intermediate rate and 41% higher rate starting at £43,431 so hundreds of thousands of people paying tax at 41% on £6,569 of their wages more than the rest of the UK) and we currently don't get 30 hours free funding and instead get 15 so the savings go towards uni fee's. I think we deserve our free prescriptions given that intermediate rate and higher rate tax payers are putting £££££££'s more into the pot in Scotland.

But yeah, we're such a big burden.... we'd rather spend the money on education and health than nuclear weapons to climb into Trumps backside with

LearningPianoAgain · 13/12/2019 20:28

I thought the oil that’s left in the North Sea was difficult and expensive to get to. There’s a lot of knowledge in Aberdeen about the oil industry - but again it’s largely based in international companies- not Scottish ones

Pikehau · 13/12/2019 20:32

That's interesting on the tax point. But will the high taxes continue in an independent scotland to fund education prescriptions etc ( which I agree with)

Where does the SNP lay out all the solutions to things like currency, defence, taxes, income etc.

I had a newborn for indy ref 1 and was more consumed with that.

But Sturgeon is phenomenal, one of the best politicians around. So now my interest is peaked.

itgetshardereveryday · 13/12/2019 20:36

needsomehelptoday because SNP isn't Conservative, and is most likely to keep Conservative out in most constituencies

Yes, in Scotland. It makes not one bit of difference in the uk as a whole.

(Remember when snp used to be called the tartan tories)

bluebells1 · 13/12/2019 20:38

So you think that Brexit should not happen or happen at a snails pace but the scottish independence should happen yesterday?

Oh and Gina Miller and co have set a precedence. Parliament has to approve. Oops...

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/12/2019 20:40

A lot of whisky companies may now be foreign owned... but in order to qualify as scotch whisky it has to be made here which keeps the industry/profits afloat.

Also plenty of families who owned distilleries and have now sold off and diversified.

Nobody has mentioned Scottish tourism which seems to have exploded in recent years.

Random18 · 13/12/2019 20:49

Not all independence supporters would have voted SNP last night.

I suspect a fair few who want Scotland out of EU and UK would have voted Tory last night.

I think independence is inevitable now. Unless BJ actually becomes a decent person and a decent PM - yeah, it ain't going to happen.

I know some scots have anti English feeling, but I am shocked at the nastiness to Scots not just on social media but in Westminster itself.

With an ugly Nationlism in England on the rise, it is.going to get to the stage that Boris will not be able to say No. Or Nicola will simply ignore him - if she has the support.

He deserves to be the last prime Minister of the United Kingdom

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 13/12/2019 20:51

Surely if the UK (England/the southeast) is going to do marvelously from Brexit and even if it didn't, it's worth it for FREEEEEDOM, surely the same applies to Scotland?

Ineedanamechange79 · 13/12/2019 20:52

I would be very surprised if the SNP won an independence referendum right now. Yes they gained a lot of votes but many were strategic to remove tory mps. Everyone who wants independence voted SNP, but not everyone who voted SNP wants independence.

Random18 · 13/12/2019 20:56

I don't think independence would happen now. But I think it's more likely to happen long term that it was in 2014.

Scotland has put up with an awful lot of shit under tory rule.

The Proclaimers song cap in hand rings a bell at the moment

pinkstripeycat · 13/12/2019 20:56

Can I ask Scottish people on here l, do you want Scotland to leave the UK? I speak to a lot of people ages 50+ through work and they all say how much they dislike Nicola sturgeon and how they want to stay in the uk

itgetshardereveryday · 13/12/2019 20:59

@pinkstripeycat I don't want Scotland to be independent.

Chickenwing · 13/12/2019 21:04

@pinkstripeycat yes I want Scottish Independence

Mydogmylife · 13/12/2019 21:11

@pinkstripeycat
Yes I want Scotland to be independant - in a heartbeat!!!
