To think MN is a Hard Left echo chamber

DowntownAbby · 13/12/2019 00:14

And that's why so, so many MNers are baffled that the Conservatives are going to achieve a landslide victory over Labour.

Out there is the real world, there was far less support for Corbyn but most MNers couldn't see what was coming.

OP posts:

*I agree. I’m surprised those comments haven’t been removed - maybe whoever is on duty tonight at mn towers agrees with them!

There's no way the MN moderators are unbiased. Abuse against anyone right-of-centre is fair game. I don't really like her (but do find myself agreeing with her sometimes) but there was a thread about Katie Hopkins on here earlier and posts wishing her a horrible death were allowed to stay.

Double-standards

Jillyhilly · 13/12/2019 01:07

I agree OP. Actually the ongoing bafflement of many mumsnetters that the vast majority of ordinary people don’t actually share their opinions is one of the things I like best about coming here.

Waspnest · 13/12/2019 01:26

The mood on here tonight does feel nasty. I think the mods must be tearing their hair out trying to keep up (assuming people are reporting and not just avoiding certain threads).

CendrillonSings · 13/12/2019 01:51

Maybe they'll learn from their crushing defeat tonight.

But probably not!

littlepaddypaws · 13/12/2019 04:26

some of the labour posters on threads tonight are total scum.

Tippexy · 13/12/2019 04:31

I’m not sure how you have only just noticed this tonight!

Conservative voters aren’t ‘allowed’ to have any threads on here. Within about five posts a Labour voter will come on to tell us that we’re vile child murdering cunts. It’s been like this for years and years.

bruffin · 13/12/2019 04:59

The labour supporters on here in recent days have spewed hyperbolic, patronising, bigoted and hysterical hectoring of anyone who doesn't agree with them.
They have always been like that on here.
All the I'm so devastated posts just show the hypocrisy of the left.
They are way more bigoted than any Tory voter I know.

BarbedBloom · 13/12/2019 05:19

But I think the mood on here may be reflective of how people feel. I feel that the country is very divided and people are very angry - honestly, I am and right now I can't speak to people who voted tory. I will obviously calm down and be more rational later today, but the way the election was fought on both sides was bound to provoke very strong feelings. I only see further division to come to be honest, but I suppose that was a given however the election had gone.

bruffin · 13/12/2019 05:21

Barbedbloom
It's always been like this, not just the last few days

IdiotInDisguise · 13/12/2019 05:22

I don’t know if it is an echo chamber, but I must live in one. I only know 2 people who would vote conservative, my friends, colleagues, and neighbours woulldn’t touch them with a barge pole.

WatchingTheMoon · 13/12/2019 05:22

It's more of a champagne socialist utopia I'd say.

I'm a lifelong working class Labour supporter and I don't see myself represented here.

A lot of hand-wringing over food banks and poor people but a real lack of understanding as to why people in working class communities are no longer voting left (outside Scotland).

Most of the Tory voters I know aren't city boys/Home Counties types, they're people who are from immigrant backgrounds or people who live in areas with shitty resources. But they don't feel like Labour represent them and they feel sneered at and talked down to.

Apolloanddaphne · 13/12/2019 05:23

I have been horrified at the way Tory voters have been treated on this site. It has really made me rethink my relationship with MN. We live in a democracy and we all have the right to vote as we see fit. The scaremongering has reached fever pitch. I really cannot bear it much longer.

Marleyisme · 13/12/2019 05:35

Just the opposite, actually. I’ve always found Left/centrist supporters to be tempered in their replies

You either out and out lying. Or you havent read many political threads. Or, probably, agree that it's ok to call people cunts and murderers for voting Tory.

It happens every election on here. It becomes this echo chamber. Then the results come in and theres a load of thread with people all trying to out do eachother with how distraught they are in an attempt to prove how caring and empathetic they are.

But they are genuinely shocked. They didnt see it coming though most of the country did.

Changingchanging123 · 13/12/2019 05:42

@WatchingTheMoon a really thoughtful reply. I don't live in that type of community but really wish I could understand it better. Although I too think Labour and it's supporters are deeply unattractive.

BarbaraStrozzi · 13/12/2019 05:43

I think (as always happens in the run up to elections) you get a lot of party activists being noisy and engaging in quite a bit of attempted astroturfing. I think the demographics of the site does skew left but not as far as you might think, from recent activity.

But the Momentum supporters are definitely having a most unpleasant tantrum. The Corbynistas thread is quite an eye opener - many of us moderate Labour supporters saying "we told you he was unelectable, that reenacting the years of Foot and Militant Tendency wasn't going to go well for Labour", and being met with howls of "fuck off Tory cunt."

Couple that to three and a half years of telling over 17 million people (including 4 million Labour voters) that they were thick, ignorant and evil - well tonight's result is hardly a big surprise.

And I say that as a former Labour party member (initially hoped to mitigate the hard left entryism, but left over anti-Semitism and women's rights).

Ilovetolurk · 13/12/2019 05:56

Actually the ongoing bafflement of many mumsnetters that the vast majority of ordinary people don’t actually share their opinions is one of the things I like best about coming here

I agree entirely

In the real world voters actually do want Brexit delivered

Oohaye · 13/12/2019 06:03

Mumsnet is a horrible place just now and it’s the Labour voters making it that way. I’m going to stay off for a bit until it calms down. To be told you hate the poor, disabled and need to ‘fucking die’ is t very nice. My son has autism, I don’t have much money but I believe conservative was right for the country at this time. It doesn’t make me a bad person and the hateful labour voters need to take a long hard look at themselves. Disgraceful behaviour from the so called ‘moral’ party

YouJustDoYou · 13/12/2019 06:08

Maybe now all the deeply unsettling "you're a fucking cunt to vote Tory" vileness will stop.

TryingAndFailing39 · 13/12/2019 06:21

Never found that. Just the opposite, actually. I’ve always found Left/centrist supporters to be tempered in their replies,

😂😂😂😂 this made me laugh!

TheClaws · 13/12/2019 06:28

You either out and out lying. Or you havent read many political threads. Or, probably, agree that it's ok to call people cunts and murderers for voting Tory.

Why would I bother lying? Ive read - and started - plenty of political threads. On those threads - and they are Left-ish threads - the nastiest posters are only the Conservative ones. Typically they tend towards swearing, misspelled words, lack of punctuation, conspiracy theories, racism, identity politics of the more extreme level, etc.

I’ve never called anyone else a “cunt” or “murderer”, let alone a Tory voter. On the threads I’m on, I’ve never seen those kinds of words used by the Left posters. I’ve seen some today - provoked by a smug Tory OP. But that’s it.

KatherineJaneway · 13/12/2019 06:28

Corbyn was and is unelectable. As a pp said it was reminiscent of having Foot in charge of the party. This election result is not a surprise to many.

I don’t know if it is an echo chamber, but I must live in one. I only know 2 people who would vote conservative, my friends, colleagues, and neighbours woulldn’t touch them with a barge pole.

Or they tell you that but when they cast their vote, it's a different story.

TheClaws · 13/12/2019 06:29

But, if you like, you can have your safe space today Grin

bogginmacaroni · 13/12/2019 06:33

Do one.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/12/2019 06:35

I’ve always found Left/centrist supporters to be tempered in their replies

Not any more, if the filth they've been typing tonight's anything to go by ...

AuntieStella · 13/12/2019 06:36

Definitely left leaning.

And the level of insult has been really quite awful (it's always an unpleasant place the morning after an election, this is among the worse ones)

It's easy to see why there is so much talk of divisions in society.
