Tell me the good things about Johnson's Brexit plans...

With it looking like a Tory majority, and Johnson's intention to 'get Brexit done' (in a different way to the way he 'got it done' in October), I'm trying to understand how a hard Brexit, possible a no deal Brexit, will be the saviour of the country that the Conservatives believe that it will be.

What benefits will a hard Brexit bring to the people of the UK?

No idea. He's still hamstrung by the actions of the hung parliament.

I'm waiting to see how the rhetoric goes...

catlady3 · 12/12/2019 23:02

I think he must know that it's madness. So what I'm clinging to is the thought that he tried to do what May failed to do - get a decent majority so he no longer has to rely on the nutty brexiters. Come up with a better plan, BINO type thing. I don't know. Sad times.

CripsSandwiches · 12/12/2019 23:05

There are two conflicting factors here. Firstly Johnson's not stupid he knows Brexit is a stupid idea and a hard Brexit catastrophic and now he might actually be accountable for it when it happens. On the other hand Johnson doesn't care about anyone or anything but himself and as a result is reckless. If he thinks he can blame someone else or simply deny it with the press on his side when it all goes wrong he'll happily do so.

DippyAvocado · 12/12/2019 23:10

Doubtful there will be any visible benefits. EU migration will undoubtedly fall but probably be replaced by non-EU migration.

Economically, there won't be any benefits, but I predict it will be more of a gradual decline rather than a huge immediate impact on the economy so difficult to know how long the effects will take to show. Maybe not even by the time the next election is due.

FWIW, I don't think there will be a no-deal Brexit. The threat of the Brexit party is much less if there is little chance of an election for several years and hopefully the ERG influence will be diluted if there is a bigger Tory majority. Unless all the new Tory MPs who replaced the moderates that have stood down turn out to be rampant ERG types, which is entirely possible.

I think a lot of how BJ proceeds will depend on whether Trump wins the next US election.

Jenpop234 · 12/12/2019 23:10

It's unlikely to be a no deal Brexit as Boris has a deal ready. He just couldn't get it through parliament because he didn't have enough seats before. Hence the election.

KidLorneRoll · 12/12/2019 23:11

None.

Fuck all.

There are no benefits.

AlexaShutUp · 12/12/2019 23:12

I think the Tories will be unelectable for a generation when people realise what they've voted for. Possibly finished forever.

Unfortunately, the rest of us (and the planet) will be fucked in the meantime.

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/12/2019 23:14

Our children will be at the back of the queue (if they are even in the queue) for any professional jobs outside the uk. Well done conservatives - the anti-progress party.

fedup2017 · 12/12/2019 23:17

Maybe the pound will rise a bit with the uncertainty settled.... So our holiday in France may be a bit cheaper next year ....We'll probably have a queue for a fair bit at customs mind to get in and out......

Lolapusht · 12/12/2019 23:17

@Jenpop234 that deal is the Withdrawal Agreement so it’s not The Deal. We can still have a No Deal Brexit. What they’ve done is get everyone thinking they’ve had enough of all of this Brexit nonsense...everyone’s fed up and just “wants it done”, but it’s not done. We’ve got years more of this and the timeframes they’ve been merrily been chucking about are completely unrealistic, as the EU has said. But yeah, Corbyn’s really bad...

AlexaShutUp · 12/12/2019 23:19

Some people believe any old shite, don't they. No wonder we end up with the shitty government that we've got.

Bumfuzzled · 12/12/2019 23:19

If you are part of the Murdoch family you will be breathing a sigh of relief. All that tax you nearly had to start paying. And anyone like Jacob Rees Mogg whose company doesn’t pay UK tax. Jumping for joy no doubt.

Arms traders will be pleased too. The EU is bringing in some right old whammies they didn’t like.

And Trump will be mega pleased. Roasted NHS for Christmas anyone? He will be planning on how he will carve up that little gift as we speak.

Fools the god damn lot of you who voted Tory.

Parker231 · 12/12/2019 23:20

The no deal hard Brexit will be December 2020 as there is no way according to the trade experts that trade deals can be negotiated in time - they will take years.

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 12/12/2019 23:21

I will list the benefits:

List complete.

FruitcakeOfHate · 12/12/2019 23:22

What Bum said, with the added bonus of Putin also dancing a happy jig right about now, too.

PerkingFaintly · 12/12/2019 23:38

Now there's getting your excuses in early, CuriousAboutSamphire!Grin

Justanotherlurker · 12/12/2019 23:41

Imagine still trying to push this 2017 narrative and still pretend you are politically aware

PerkingFaintly · 12/12/2019 23:42

Anyone want to open a book for how long it will take for "Of course we're not privatising the NHS" to morph into "The NHS is publicly funded and free at the point of use, so you're not allowed to care about who the provider is. (Psst, don't look while we taper down what it actually provides.)"

GCAcademic · 12/12/2019 23:44

Some very very rich people will get richer.

Immigrants will come from developing countries instead of the EU, delighting all those Leave voters who in no way whatsoever voted for Brexit because they don't like foreigners.

The US will do nicely out of the massive drug price hikes that the government has admitted are likely to happen.

CripsSandwiches · 12/12/2019 23:45

I've thought of one positive. The UK economy will likely crash meaning our carbon footprint will decrease. The UK often blocked environmental laws passing in the EU so without us perhaps they'll get more through. So maybe the environment will get a boost.

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/12/2019 23:47

I do think the conservatives will become progressively unelectable as those currently in their 20s get older without getting materially wealthier and find themselves cut off from opportunities. But it will take a long time and we’ll be dead or in care homes by then!

Sandaled · 12/12/2019 23:47

It depends whether they get a majority as to whether it's soft or hard more than likely.

slipperywhensparticus · 12/12/2019 23:50

Blue passports annd.....I'm out 🤷‍♀️oooh but the farmers won't be subsidised anymore ummm have we given the passport printing contract to France or Poland so they will have jobs....ok I'm struggling here repeal of the tampon tax?

Sinopehope · 12/12/2019 23:54

We’ll be bloody lucky if there are any care homes available.

PerkingFaintly · 12/12/2019 23:56

Dippy, I'm hoping you're right about the ERG and Brexit Party having less influence if a Tory prime minister doesn't have to rely on them to make up the numbers.

This is Johnson we're talking about, though. He wants to be king, have fun and become even richer... and other than that is unpredictable.
