If Labour fail to win the election do you think Corbyn should resign?

He’s lost/losing 2 elections the Labour Party should have won.

The membership keep him in power.

I left the party over a number of issues and feel enraged we don’t have an opposition that’s able to challenge one of the most feeble Tory leader/party in history.

I’m still “red” and will be voting tactically for Labour, but with a heavy heart.

I believe he should resign (and have done so before now) am I unreasonable?

Yes.

Tbh it's the only glimmer of hope in this mess. A Labour leadership election would be a great Xmas present. Although I fear he'd get back in again.

HepzibahGreen · 12/12/2019 08:15

Some of the left Labour policies are great (some are terrifying)but I just don't trust them to be competent enough to deliver.
It's not just Corbyn it's his cronies too.
Anyway, yanbu.

Medievalist · 12/12/2019 08:15

Beamur - I think JC is a 'dangerous egomaniac' too. He prefers an unelectable Labour Party with him in charge to an electable one with someone else at the helm.

BeyondMyWits · 12/12/2019 08:16

Labour does not want to win right now.

They want the Tories to be hamstrung by the shit-show that is Brexit.

They will wait until the crap hits the fan in 2 or 3 years, get rid of Corbyn and stand as the party of reason.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 12/12/2019 08:17

@BeyondMyWits that's hilarious. That was the excuse that was used during the last election too.

Corbyn wants to win because he thinks he can do a better job of Brexit. Stop making excuses for them before they've even lost.

Trewser · 12/12/2019 08:18

I think you are totally right beyond

WhatchaMaCalllit · 12/12/2019 08:18

Other Labour leaders (and from other parties too) have resigned when they have been unsuccessful in getting their party elected to government. Two that stick out in my mind are Milliband and Kinnock.

Yes I think he should resign if Labour don't win.
Yes I think Johnson should resign (and go quietly) if the Conservatives don't win.
The rest...I don't really mind.

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/12/2019 08:19

I don't think they have a viable alternative leader though.

notquiteruralbliss · 12/12/2019 08:19

I’m with Mumdiva on this one. And unfortunately I think any leader of the Labour Party would be attacked by the media. They aren’t exactly impartial are they?

coldlighthappier · 12/12/2019 08:20

I am a current Labour Party member and I think the persecution of Corbyn in the media is ridiculous. There would have to be a VERY good alternative for me to not want him as the leader of the party. If anything he’s a driving force behind me becoming a member and voting for Labour

Christmaspug · 12/12/2019 08:21

I’d never thought I’d be voting labour ,yet here I am.i like his plans ,I hope he gets in ,he’s what we need right now

Luckylassiam · 12/12/2019 08:24

I don’t think Corbyn really wants to win either. Then he’d have to implement what he said and he wouldn’t want to do it. Cost would be astronomical. Country would sink. This is why everyday he’d come out with something more ludicrous and make voters think ‘wtf’ I’m not voting for him.

OrangeTwirl · 12/12/2019 08:37

Just what I was going to say ^^
It's all very well promising everyone the moon and a pony.. he has failed to say how he is going to pay for it.

SlothMama · 12/12/2019 08:44

He needs to go, it’s time for someone new and fresh in the party as a leader. I’d like to see someone younger, who actually cares about the future of this planet

CluelessNewMama · 12/12/2019 08:48

I just don’t get the rhetoric, that I’ve seen many times on here and elsewhere, that Labour have no economic plans for covering their spending promises. They clearly do and their plans have been backed by many prominent economists.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/general-election-labour-economy-spending-corbyn-boris-johnson-a9218041.html%3famp

What is it that everyone thinks they know that 163 leading economists don’t? Or are you all just spouting the same statements without actually forming your own opinions?

SnorkMaiden81 · 12/12/2019 08:50

He should have stepped down some considerable time ago.

user5656 · 12/12/2019 08:51

Yes, he should resign and I hope Keir Starmer will take over.

Symptomless · 12/12/2019 08:57

The next one will be just as vilified as he was. So it won't make a difference.

fligglepige · 12/12/2019 09:01

I used to think he should but realistically people just need to grow up and stop saying they aren't going to vote for the party they want because they don't like the leader. It's childish and a bit pathetic.

catlady3 · 12/12/2019 09:07

He should resign full stop, this is the second election he's cocked up for Labour. They should have had a landslide in 2017.

Trewser · 12/12/2019 09:07

Same as people banging on about Boris then.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 12/12/2019 09:08

@CluelessNewMama the question is where the money comes from, not where it goes.

Littletabbyocelot · 12/12/2019 09:13

I think the time for him to resign was before this election because we needed a credible central left policy, who the media might support - or at least not have time to tear down. And I say that as someone who was furious when Tony Blair moved the party to the centre (I was 17 and ideological).

I think in 5 years the landscape will be very different. The advantage of a Tory majority forcing through a hard brexit will be they can't blame anyone else for the impact on the economy (which most economists agree will be significant) , or the trade deals that will still be dragging on, or rising child poverty (and outrageously rising infant mortality), or inaction on climate change as we get half way through the 12 years. The people who are undecided now and see the Torys as the 'safe' choice will perhaps be more open to a radical choice. In terms of climate change it will probably be the only choice we have left.

Trewser · 12/12/2019 09:15

I agree. I think the Green party will increase in vote share over the next 10 years.

lonelyplanetmum · 12/12/2019 09:22

The Labour Party is more than Corbyn. Kier Starmer, Yvette Cooper, Hilary Benn, Rebecca Long Bailey, Emily Thornberry, David Lammy, Angela Rayner, Ed Miliband, Angela Eagle.

Please note, unlike the new breed of Tory's currently in control, Labour has not been putting out fake fact checking websites or doctored videos of their opponents.

Corbyn will retire, whatever happens. He is over 70.
