If Labour fail to win the election do you think Corbyn should resign?

He’s lost/losing 2 elections the Labour Party should have won.

The membership keep him in power.

I left the party over a number of issues and feel enraged we don’t have an opposition that’s able to challenge one of the most feeble Tory leader/party in history.

I’m still “red” and will be voting tactically for Labour, but with a heavy heart.

I believe he should resign (and have done so before now) am I unreasonable?

His ego won't allow him.

Alaimo · 12/12/2019 07:23

I like Corbyn and like Labour's current manifesto. However, if agree that he needs to step down if he loses the election, because it's clearly not working.

I'm not 100% convinced the party needs to be more centrist though. I thought surveys showed that the electorate like Labour's policies, but don't like Corbyn?

BeardedMum · 12/12/2019 07:25

If he had resigned 6 months ago and labour had put forward an electable leader they would have walked it.

TheFuckingDogs · 12/12/2019 07:25

Haha! Do we think Johnson should resign if he loses his own fucking seat?! (The answer to this is obviously a yes) he could retire to a nice fridge

Absa · 12/12/2019 07:30

Yes! I think many more people would vote for Labour if he (and D.A.) stepped down.

MrsAgassi · 12/12/2019 07:32

I remember someone commenting when JC got the leadership that it would lead to 10 years of Tory rule.

Who knows if that will be the case but I can certainly now see that it may be.

I know many lifelong Labour supporters that will not vote for the party whilst he is at the helm.

I think he needs to go if he doesn’t make significant gains. Same for Jo Swinson. Same for Boris.

MoltoAgitato · 12/12/2019 07:33

I think the fact that the Labour Party can’t see how unattractive he is to swing voters, who they need to win an election, is a damning indictment of the current state of the Labour Party.

MrsAgassi · 12/12/2019 07:33

20 years that should have been!

Gruzinkerbell1 · 12/12/2019 07:35

I hope so. He needs to disappear back under the little trippy trappy bridge that he crawled out from. I would happily vote for a more central Labour Party. As it stands I cannot and will not vote to put that man and his appalling shadow cabinet into power. I hope they all disappear once and for all after tonight and the Labour Party can finally begin to recover.

Saddler · 12/12/2019 07:40

No he's fantastic for the Conservative party. Unelectable

BrusselPout · 12/12/2019 07:48

If he had resigned 6 months ago and labour had put forward an electable leader they would have walked it.

This, you only need to look at mumsnet (which tends to err on the side of labour anyway) to see how many people aren't voting that way because of Corbyn. It's easy to say 'vote for your local MP not the leader' but the reality is that the vote determines who will be the leader of the Country and a lot of people don't want him to be it as they see him as a political relic, with the kind of extreme views that kept the tories in for years

If they had a more moderate leader going into this election, I have no doubt we'd be waking up to an easy labour victory tomorrow. As it is I suspect the tories will still be there

Equanimitas · 12/12/2019 07:54

YANBU. One of the most incredibly frustrating things about the current situation is that he's had an open goal with the mess the Conservatives have been in for the last three years and hasn't ever taken advantage of it. Whatever Blair's faults, it he had been in charge Labour would have got in at the last election.

Hingeandbracket · 12/12/2019 07:59

The membership keep him in power

The horror!

Luckylassiam · 12/12/2019 07:59

He can’t resign. He’s not actually in charge. Momentum are. If he doesn’t, surely that will show everyone. Labour should be outing him. Should’ve done before this election. Any other party and he’d have been long gone by now.

Hingeandbracket · 12/12/2019 08:00

Whatever Blair's faults, it he had been in charge Labour would have got in at the last election.
By promising more Thatcherite policies but with a red badge - no thanks

AJPTaylor · 12/12/2019 08:02

He is unelectable.
Always has been.

Trewser · 12/12/2019 08:03

Well, if goes it will be John McDonnell and Rebeca Long Bailey or Angela Rayner, all equally as bad.

meditrina · 12/12/2019 08:08

The membership keep him in power

And that is why he should stay.

If he loses their support, then fine, time to select a leader who does have the membership, with them.

But expecting a resignation when that has not happened is wrong.

Especially if you have a ponder about:

'Does the Labour Party actually want to be in government right now?'

Beamur · 12/12/2019 08:08

I don't have a problem with Corbyn myself and it's interesting to see how well attended any event he goes to is. I don't agree with everything he stands for but I don't think he's a dangerous egomaniac either (unlike the current PM who most certainly is!)
But, I think he should stand down if he loses and I think the same about Boris Johnson.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 12/12/2019 08:10

Just wondering - are posters on this thread Labour Party members (I know people might not be willing to disclose).

Not supporters (or former supporters, or former members) but actual current members?

The ones who have a vote when it comes to Party leadership

Iggly · 12/12/2019 08:11

Another labour leader who is more charismatic may well come along who also is elected by the party membership.

I say fair play to JC. He’s not been a sneaking motherfucker like Boris and it’s clear what his principles are (except Brexit - he’s definitely a leaver in my opinion).

But sadly the politician system we live in means that you need a leader which appeals to those floating voters.

What we really need is proportional representation.

MarieG10 · 12/12/2019 08:11

@Trewser

Well, if goes it will be John McDonnell and Rebeca Long Bailey or Angela Rayner, all equally as bad.

Apparently could also be Laura Pidcock. With the exception of John McDonnell who won't stand, it seems that the next one has to have a working class accent to try and reconnect with the working class that Labour seem to have abandoned.

Unfortunately having a decent IQ doesn't seem to be a requirement

Dongdingdong · 12/12/2019 08:12

I think the power of a subjective media is something that needs to be addressed in this country

Like how dictators do?

madeyemoodysmum · 12/12/2019 08:13

Yes as I would consider labour with a more logical central sensible leader

Pancakeflipper · 12/12/2019 08:14

Yes.
I think if he'd resigned last year and there was another in place then this election would not be happening as Boris would be too scared.
