I was thinking of buy my 30 year old daughter a nice ballpoint pen for Christmas, my OH says youngsters don’t use them these days. Is he right? Don’t want to waste my money.

Sorry, but I don't think anyone even writes anymore on paper, much less with a ballpoint pen.

crispysausagerolls · 11/12/2019 08:59

Yes they do! Tiffany’s does beautiful ones. But I still use a fountain pen so don’t ask me 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

RadicalFern · 11/12/2019 09:00

I'm not yet 30 and I love writing with nice pens, so if I were your daughter I'd love it...

churchandstate · 11/12/2019 09:01

I do use pens but it’s for scribbling down phone numbers or taking notes in meetings. Is she in a job where that might help with her image?

busybarbara · 11/12/2019 09:03

much less with a ballpoint pen

A ballpoint pen is basically just a biro, the most basic sort of pen you can get. People rarely use fountain/ink pens now but biros are the most generically used sort of pen there is

finn1020 · 11/12/2019 09:03

I’d say probably not, as a pen is just a pen. If someone gave one to me I’d also be worried about losing it as expensive as pens are like odd socks in our house, always disappearing. Plus they’re the one thing the dog will occasionally chew.

Lweji · 11/12/2019 09:05

If you're going to spend a decent amount of money, then a fountain pen. But more of a keepsake than something she's likely to use often.

You can buy good ballpoint pens very cheaply.

DarkHumour · 11/12/2019 09:06

I’m a little older than your daughter and think it’s a great gift. A nice ballpoint to keep in my handbag would be lovely. A pen is still a useful and practical gift esp at this time of year for writing Christmas cards, gift tags etc.

Booboostwo · 11/12/2019 09:06

busybarbara yes, of course, you are right. I somehow read 'ballpoint' as 'fountain pen' and imagined a Mont Blanc! If it's a ballpoint, it makes it even weirder!

FizzyPink · 11/12/2019 09:07

I’m almost 30 and I’d be most put out with a pen. However a decent pair of boots, handbag or bracelet would go down very well.

andpancakesforbreakfast · 11/12/2019 09:07

Of course people do use pens, just leave a batch on your desk and see how quickly they disappear Grin
and that's despite all your team being kitted out with apple pencils and tablets

Do you think your daughter will use it? If so, yes, it's a lovely present.

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 11/12/2019 09:09

I'm in my early thirties and would not be wowed by a pen. I have tonnes of normal cheap ones in the house and it doesn't bother me that I would need a special one. Sorry

Broken11Girl · 11/12/2019 09:09

Um depends on her Confused you know your DD surely

inwood · 11/12/2019 09:11

Has she expressed a desire for a pen? I'd love it but then I write with a fountain pen.

Emmapeeler1 · 11/12/2019 09:11

I got a Mont Blanc pen for my 30th and I love it. Depends if she is a pen person. Clearly not everyone is going by this thread!

FakeChristmasTreesaremynewnorm · 11/12/2019 09:11

Some people love pens, like my dd who likes collecting stationary, some see it as just a pen no different that something you could get for £5. I would try to see what your dd thinks. Also does she like to have fancy versions of everyday items? If she has the opportunity would she buy it herself?

myfuckingfreezer · 11/12/2019 09:12

In 28 and love stationery but this would not go down well! Too likely to lose it in a hot dealing environment and I already have preferred pens I can buy in 3s!

Maykid · 11/12/2019 09:13

I saw some nice Swarovski pens in the colour she likes. She is a project manager and mum. Not living with her now I just don’t know if she would have use for one.

Maybe people could recommend another gift up to £20. This is just an extra and I am so stuck. She is not into cosmetics etc.

Nice food or drink or books?

People do still use pens but not everyone will be bothered about using a special pen.

Parkandride · 11/12/2019 09:20

I'd love a nice fountain pen, I'm 31. Wouldn't say no to a ballpoint but it would need to write really nicely

crispysausagerolls · 11/12/2019 09:22

Get the pen OP! Swarovski also sell refills for the ballpoint so she can use it endlessly

Dollymixture22 · 11/12/2019 09:25

I would love a pen, if she is a project manager she probably takes a lot of notes, what about a lovely notebook to go with it?

PhilCornwall1 · 11/12/2019 09:31

I'm quite a bit older than your daughter, but I do think a pen is a nice present, it's something totally different.

Most of my writing now is in my notebook for work. I'm in a technical job, where I need make a lot of notes during the day. I've got a really crap pen that I'm using at the moment, as I need to get a refill for my favourite one.

Whilst it's only notes I'm making, it's good to have a pen that's comfy to use. My writing is also neater with my favourite pen.

dottiedodah · 11/12/2019 09:31

I still think a pen is a nice gift if you just want a little extra something TBH. She probably has a calendar at home? Otherwise for about £20.00 : Some nice cosy slippers, leather gloves , decent scarf.some nice chocolates ,A bottle of booze ? Any of these would be welcome to my DD who is 31
