I was thinking of buy my 30 year old daughter a nice ballpoint pen for Christmas, my OH says youngsters don’t use them these days. Is he right? Don’t want to waste my money.

OP posts:

Get the pen OP! I'm 35 and I would LOVE this gift. (but then I own a glass dip pen so perhaps I am not the norm.)

formerbabe · 11/12/2019 10:02

It's a retirement present from the 1980s.

Ijustwanttoretire · 11/12/2019 10:04

I think it would be lovely - I have a posh ballpoint that comes in its own little bag and it sits in my handbag - it writes beautifully, there is a difference! And yes, people do have to write still - how could you sign a cheque otherwise? Wink

ButterflyBook · 11/12/2019 10:05

Jewellery. For £20 you could get some lovely earrings on Etsy
Isn't that assuming everyone has pierced ears though? Unless you mean clip on ones which are pretty uncomfortable

Beautiful3 · 11/12/2019 10:05

I was gifted a very expensive pen on my 21st. I was worried that I'd lose it, so I put it away and lost it! Think it's a nice thought though, if she has a desk then she'll probably always use it.

PurpleDaisies · 11/12/2019 10:05

Do people actually write cheques any more?

fruityconfusedhotdog · 11/12/2019 10:07

My sister and I are around your daughters age. My sister would love that as a gift; I would appreciate it but worry about losing it, so it would most likely stay in the house for "best". I'd be happier with a pack of the nice pens from Muji Grin

My mum got me an organiser pad with space for meal planning on one side and a shopping list on the other side which I've found really handy.

PurpleDaisies · 11/12/2019 10:07

Presumably the op will know whether her daughter had pierced ears. Confused

notnowmaybelater · 11/12/2019 10:08

I like pens - mid price as I don't like things I'm afraid of loosing. My teenagers like pers too, not only for school. They have strong opinions about pens, get pen envy etc.

Cheques on the other hand - I haven't seen a cheque since my grandmother died five years ago (she'd be 104 if she were still alive).

Yebbut my comment was to the person suggesting it.

formerbabe · 11/12/2019 10:10

Honestly I'd be gutted with an expensive pen. I'd rather have ten pens from the poundshop and the money spent of something else...jewellery, make up, perfume, book, bag, scarf etc. You write with a pen...expensive or cheap, the result is the same, unless you're really into calligraphy or something.

Such a dated gift...

PurpleDaisies · 11/12/2019 10:11

Yes but my comment was to the person suggesting it.

That was me.

housewifeoflittleitaly · 11/12/2019 10:11

Ok clearly I am the odd one out but that’s what I’ve asked for this year!! My DH has bought me a pen & had it inscribed.

I use it because I am a teacher and I like a nice pen. I suppose it depends on her and if she would use it daily?

Not everyone likes/wants an apple pen!

Keepmewarm · 11/12/2019 10:13

Get the pen. It is a lovely gift.

CakeandCustard28 · 11/12/2019 10:15

I’m 28 and haven’t use a ball point pen in years! But it’s your daughter surely you know her likes and dislikes. Maybe a voucher for the cinema?

lastqueenofscotland · 11/12/2019 10:15

I’m 28 and would not appreciate it... sorry

TheLittleBrownFox · 11/12/2019 10:15

It's a retirement present from the 1980s.

So what - it's clear from the thread that quite a number of people of the recipient's age would like it.

I wouldn't say no to a gold watch either

eggandonion · 11/12/2019 10:16

I work in a small business and we get a few cheques.

Two of my three adult kids have a filofax, the other has a desk calendar. I assume they use pens. If I had a nice pen my dh would borrow it and it would vanish for ever!

Lweji · 11/12/2019 10:16

How do you sign documents?

SallyWD · 11/12/2019 10:20

I love a nice ballpoint pen! I put one on my Christmas list, along with a posh pen holder that I can keep in my handbag.

ffswhatnext · 11/12/2019 10:22

Get her a pen.
I got mine a pen this year, it's a ballpoint and stylus.
It will be enjoyed and used.
Cannot use your tablet to write a cheque, and not everything child-related takes cash/electronic payments. Same with the associated forms.

And if people don't use pens anymore, can someone explain how handwritten envelopes, cards, letters, postcards etc get written?

SistersOfPercy · 11/12/2019 10:22

I have bought DD a pen and a notebook this year. Nothing fancy, just a daft fluffy pen from Paperchase, but it's something she carries in her handbag.
I'd say go for it.

LeSquigh · 11/12/2019 10:26

I LOVE pens and spend a ridiculous amount of money on them. I am around 40 and would love that as a gift. Lots of women I know around my age are also stationery mad. Of course people still use pens! Only you know whether your daughter would appreciate it though. I prefer ballpoint over fountain pens, I think to warrant a decent fountain pen you need to have good decent cursive handwriting. If I’m making an effort with my handwriting I do not write cursively so a ballpoint pen is better. Having said that, a cheap BIC is brilliant!

RhymingRabbit3 · 11/12/2019 10:27

I'm 29 and I hardly ever write with a pen and paper, except a shopping list or occasional reminder on a post-it.
I write emails, not letters and if I have to make notes etc I would use my phone or computer. I do write at work but wouldn't take a fancy pen in case it got lost or damaged or taken.
It's a nice idea but I dont think it will be used much!

PurpleDaisies · 11/12/2019 10:27

Pens are quite personal taste though. I don’t like a lot of the posh ones because they feel too slim. Bic four coloured biro here all the way!
