I was thinking of buy my 30 year old daughter a nice ballpoint pen for Christmas, my OH says youngsters don’t use them these days. Is he right? Don’t want to waste my money.

My mum always bought people pens. I think it's a lovely useful gift.

Thehop · 11/12/2019 12:13

I’d love a nice pen

crispysausagerolls · 11/12/2019 12:14

Just wanted to add that my mother bought me a fountain pen from Cartier for my 21st birthday. 7 years later I still use it several times a week, and I treasure it massively.

I am amazed at the people on here who supposedly don’t use pens! It’s very sad

northernknickers · 11/12/2019 12:14

@viccat ahhh lovely bamboo socks!!! Best present!

Mlou32 · 11/12/2019 12:27

I would love this gift! A good pen that I could keep and use every day. Lovely idea.

GoingBackTo505 · 11/12/2019 12:31

I'm 30 and if my mum got me a pen for Christmas I'd be really confused. I just whichever pen I can find/steal from work and as long as it works, I don't really care how it looks.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 11/12/2019 12:32

I’d bloody love a really good pretty pen! But then I write a diary every night before bed, have done since I was 12 so it’s my kind of present.

Buy the pen OP, buy the pen.....

hazell42 · 11/12/2019 12:35

I have a mont blanc fountain pen that I cherish.
But I am a writer.
If your daughter enjoys writing buy her a fountain pen (ball points are crap imo)
If she doesnt write, I'd think of something else

ShirleyPhallus · 11/12/2019 12:39

I’d really dislike a pen, it would go in the generic drawers of crap

But I would actively hate a Swarovski pen, personally I find them really tacky and would never use it

Queenunikitty · 11/12/2019 12:46

I have a lovely Montegrappa ball point bought by an old boss for me nearly 20 Years ago and it still look and writes beautifully

HopeClearwater · 11/12/2019 12:59

A few people on here seem not to know what a ballpoint pen actually is.

Marylou2 · 11/12/2019 13:05

I have a beautiful Mont Blanc pen that I use in meetings. I also notice pens that others use. It's a great thing to have and like good shoes and handbags makes you look more professional.

Really? Actively dislike it? For me, any functional gift that I wasn't thrilled by but which isn't actively horrible (like, covered in Minions, or in your case a Swarovski version) would just get used. Pair of socks, pen, cutlery, teatowel, whatever. Do you just never use a pen, for anything?

Likethebattle · 11/12/2019 13:53

I have a beautiful Swarovski one that I use at work.

MrMeeseekscando · 11/12/2019 13:58

My mum bought me a Cross pen in my 20's
I love it and still use it

you can buy one for pennies here or more than £600 here or there, so to be fair, there's a rather wide range available Grin

Greyhound22 · 11/12/2019 14:03

I'm 38 I would love a special pen to keep in my handbag :)

mauvaisereputation · 11/12/2019 14:04

I think a nice ballpoint pen (eg uniball or muji) in a fun colour is a sweet little gift. I would not want a fancy/expensive pen

Goldenchildsmum · 11/12/2019 14:07

I'd say fountain not ball. Or if she wouldn't use a fountain pen, then an exquisitely beautiful wallet / purse (not handbag)

IceniSky · 11/12/2019 14:10

I'm a decade older and have asked for a posh pen and notebook from my father. I'll use it at work. I always notice when someone uses a nice pen in meetings.

Also, I think it's better for the environment, rather than uses multiple throw aways. As long as you can refill.

I did have a Swarovski one, but the clear bit with the crystals in became scratched or cloudy.

easyandy101 · 11/12/2019 14:11

Cool present!

I like technical pens personally, but any high quality biro, fountain pen or pencil works for ne

Thestrangestthing · 11/12/2019 14:12

I would be really disappointed if someone wasted money on a pen for my Christmas. You can buy them for pennies.

PineappleTart · 11/12/2019 14:14

I have some OHTO needlepoint pens and I love them. Anyone who buys me stationery for birthdays and Christmas is very loved. As long as they respect that I am very specific about ink colour. I also have a beautiful Swarovski pen

MulticolourTinselOnTheTree · 11/12/2019 14:18

MrsCasares I like your pen. Is it a Cross Botanica, or a Wanderlust?

ThreeLittleBirdz · 11/12/2019 14:47

I'm in my early 20s & would be absolutely delighted to receive a decent ball point pen-although I'm a bit of a stationary lover I must admit! Smile
