Settle a disagreement: AIBU to leave this advent candle burning throughout December including when everyone is out or in bed?

Picture for context, the candle is inside the glass/metal case.

One of us is saying it's perfectly safe and that's what an advent candle is for. The other is saying a flame should never be left unattended, no matter how safe it seems.

Just seen ops name on here, not very reassuring 🤣

avocadoze · 10/12/2019 18:58

Not unless you’d like to set your home on fire.

1Wildheartsease · 10/12/2019 18:59

That would depend on how good your fire-insurance is and how little you like to have a house to clean at Christmas.

Meercatsarecats · 10/12/2019 19:00

Surely nobody could be that stupid?
How long have you been married?
Honestly I think I'd take my husband (if i had one) to a doctor or a divorce lawyer if this was an idea that he genuinely thought was a good one.

64sNewName · 10/12/2019 19:00

LTB. I’m not even joking. Dangerous stupidity

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 10/12/2019 19:06

If I knew you I'd confiscate the matches.

Seriously?

Bunnylady53 · 10/12/2019 19:06

You seriously need to ask?!

Amiable · 10/12/2019 19:21

This shouldn’t even be a question. Never, ever leave a candle unattended. End of.

nuxe1984 · 10/12/2019 19:27

Advent candles aren't left on for the whole of advent! Where on earth did you get that idea from?

thecalmorchid · 10/12/2019 19:28

Not ever worth the risk.

VeryQuaintIrene · 10/12/2019 19:30

Why would you be burning something when no one is around to enjoy it? It'll be all burned up long before advent is over, plus it's dangerous.

dontalltalkatonce · 10/12/2019 19:42

And the winner for Stupidest Question of 2019 on MN is . . . the envelope, please, oh, no need.

FFS.

IdiotInDisguise · 10/12/2019 19:43

Just looked at the photo, I have a few similar at home. They are NOT made to be left unattended, the metal around it gets so hot that is easy to start a fire or get someone burn’t (the wax will melt inside the hot container).

I woukdn’t leave them lighted for more than 4 hours, and never unattended. That candle will barely last a couple of days if you leave it on all day long.

dontalltalkatonce · 10/12/2019 19:48

We always used to light a candle for travellers on Christmas Eve, in a stone candle holder, in a deep recessed stone windowsill, and leave it just for midnight mass.

You can now buy these things, they are called flameless candles and run off a battery. Yes!

shianthomson · 10/12/2019 19:54

It is marked on the candle!!???
Each day light it for a little while til it reaches the mark, 1/2 an hour to an hour then put it out....
Unless you have a fireman Sam fetish... value an argument over a candle rather than being homeless at Christmas !

EmbarrassingMama · 10/12/2019 19:55
  1. If you think that candle is going to burn for 730 hours you need to have a word with yourself.
  2. If you think it's sensible to leave a candle burning unattended you're insane.
TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 10/12/2019 20:02

Just don't

VAB · 10/12/2019 20:07

Who are the 2% 🤨

RB68 · 10/12/2019 20:07

There is more at issue here given you have an open fire gas coal or log, there is fabric in front of it that is flammable, there is dried willow and pine cones etc on the wreath, there is the stocking (which should only be hung late christmas eve as the fire dies down and even then would be tempted to hang some where else, there is tinsel on the fire surround on an unprotected fire... it could be used in a n advert to say whats wrong for the fire service its crazy. Do you know how emotionally devastating it is to loose everything, never mind the potential for killing off your family

MajesticWhine · 10/12/2019 20:11

The 2% pressed the wrong button by mistake.

OhioOhioOhio · 10/12/2019 20:14

That is the most ridiculous idea I've heard for absolutely ages.

LilQueenie · 10/12/2019 20:17

its plain stupidity. do you want to risk your life and others over a candle? In the church they burn it down to a point each day before lighting it the next day.

VenusTiger · 10/12/2019 20:22

I’d be more worried about the fake snow fleece and bowl of sticks?cones? directly in front of the flaming fire! Shock

NotBeforeCoffee · 10/12/2019 20:34

I know someone who died in a house fire cause by a candle. It was horrific.

32ndOfFebtober · 10/12/2019 20:43

Lots of people not reading TFT. The OP has been back and said it was her DP/H who wants to do this, not her. Also, it's not a real fire, just a poster stuck in the fireplace. I also got the impression the location of the lantern was staged as an example.
