Settle a disagreement: AIBU to leave this advent candle burning throughout December including when everyone is out or in bed?

Picture for context, the candle is inside the glass/metal case.

One of us is saying it's perfectly safe and that's what an advent candle is for. The other is saying a flame should never be left unattended, no matter how safe it seems.

Gah, just noticed "picture is for context only" Blush

The shame of not reading properly! But no, I'd extinguish like I said.

HeronLanyon · 09/12/2019 06:58

Quick google suggests tradition is that it is lit at ‘family evening meal’ each day.

FaithInfinity · 09/12/2019 06:58

Having had a house fire (electrical item), jo way would I leave a candle burning. Why on earth would you take that risk?

Planetzog · 09/12/2019 06:59

Surely that white material in front of the fire is a massive fire risk too? Our open fire often spits out burning embers.

ThanosSavedMe · 09/12/2019 07:04

Well one of you is being massively unreasonable. And fucking stood too. A definite candidate for the Darwin award

Smashedavocados · 09/12/2019 07:05

No way! And also agree with @Planetzog . That white material looks too close to an open fire.

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 09/12/2019 07:07

I assume you are religious. Have you ever been to church? The candles on the advent wreath are lit at the beginning of mass and extinguished at the end.

No. Do not leave it burn. If you let that burn continuously it would be gone by Day 2.

lifeisgoodagain · 09/12/2019 07:09

No, they burn for about an hour a day. I'm pretty relaxed about candles and I have an open fire without a guard (no kids in house) but I blow my candles out before bed, the only ones that I leave burning are tealights in glass jars which are safer

Your faith might want it lit.
The fire brigade don’t, and your insurance won’t accept it as an acceptable reason to pay out if you get out of a house fire alive.

StCharlotte · 09/12/2019 07:11

Well the one who wants to keep it lit is going to be very disappointed when it doesn't last til Christmas Eve.

BottleBeach · 09/12/2019 07:12

Tell your DH from us he’s being an idiot.

MyNewBearTotoro · 09/12/2019 07:13

Definitely not. The candle won’t burn for a month straight anyway, it will have burnt down in a few days. But regardless you’re stupid to even consider it, especially when it’s placed on flammable fake fur next to a flammable tree and flammable stocking. Why would you take that risk with your house and your lives?

Clangus00 · 09/12/2019 07:14

That’s a ridiculous question. No sane person would even consider doing that!

hiphiphoorayback · 09/12/2019 07:15

I would put a stocking next to a candle and I would not put that material under a candle. NO DO NOTleave unattended!!!!

This feels like an annual works training, where a fire officer ask all the things wrong and likely to cause a fire in the photo.Wink

hiphiphoorayback · 09/12/2019 07:15

I would not !

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 09/12/2019 07:18

There are so many things wrong here!

NEVER leave a lit candle unattended. ONLY EVER light a candle on a smooth, stable solid surface (no fake snow). NEVER put a lit candle where it is easily knocked over (like at floor level).

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 09/12/2019 07:18

That video is horrifying Fenella

BeUpStanding · 09/12/2019 07:21

This is possibly the most ridiculous AIBU ever Shock. Who would think leaving a candle to burn unattended is a good idea? Confused

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 09/12/2019 07:21

You mean that box that’s on top of the highly flammable fabric with the highly flammable fabric dangling just above it, with the highly flammable tree less than a foot away....? What could possibly go wrong.....

This is exactly what I thought!

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 09/12/2019 07:21

The fake snow in front of the fire is a dumb idea anyway.

BillHadersNewWife · 09/12/2019 07:24

My God! It's even sitting on fake nylon snow! Of course YABU! Or he is...whoever.

rwalker · 09/12/2019 07:25

can't believe your even asking

BottleBeach · 09/12/2019 07:27

OP says the picture is for context. The fake snow etc is not hers.

IHateBlueLights · 09/12/2019 07:29

My Welsh grandmother lit a candle on Christmas Eve which was left to burn all over Christmas. It was a family tradition. It was on a candle holder, on a plate on a stone mantle piece with nothing else near. We survived. OH wouldn't let me continue the tradition and I didn't want to do it enough to make a fuss.
