Settle a disagreement: AIBU to leave this advent candle burning throughout December including when everyone is out or in bed?

Picture for context, the candle is inside the glass/metal case.

One of us is saying it's perfectly safe and that's what an advent candle is for. The other is saying a flame should never be left unattended, no matter how safe it seems.

Do you really need a poll to tell you it’s dangerous to leave an unattended candle🧐

Armi · 10/12/2019 18:22

FFS. Blow the damn thing out when you aren’t there.

Zeb81 · 10/12/2019 18:22

You never leave a candle unattended.

Sometimedaisy · 10/12/2019 18:25

Darwinism in action.

Bobbi73 · 10/12/2019 18:27

My neighbours house burnt down as they left a joss stick burning while they popped to the pub. They were gone about an hour and basically came back to a shell. Please don't leave a candle unattended

Xenadog · 10/12/2019 18:30

Surely no one is so stupid as to think leaving a burning candle is ok?

Rosebel · 10/12/2019 18:34

I don't think it's unreasonable, I think it's stupid!

skyblu · 10/12/2019 18:36

Wow! I would NEVER leave this lit & unattended! That’s just asking for trouble. Foolish.
Can you imagine the conversation with the Fire Brigade (you know, those people who would risk their lives for YOUR stupidity) or the Insurance company!

TinselNTears · 10/12/2019 18:36

@EasilyDistracted77 if anything happens your insurance won't pay out

Gingertam · 10/12/2019 18:38

NEVER leave a candle unattended. Can't believe one of you thinks this would be ok.

Twillow · 10/12/2019 18:39

It's a bit hard to know whether to vote YABU or YANBU when you haven't said which position is Y! But I think enough people have said now the same as me - not worth taking the chance.

FreeStar · 10/12/2019 18:39

Whoever thinks a candle will burn for 24 days solid without running out is beyond thick!

MistyCloud · 10/12/2019 18:40

Can't believe anyone would ask this! Hmm

YABU obvs!

Jack80 · 10/12/2019 18:43

I don't even leave Christmas lights on so no nothing would be left on

messolini9 · 10/12/2019 18:43

Of COURSE it's ok, because some random on MN might just validate your obvious desire to do so.
& they are BOUND to know more than the Fire Brigade, who advise, funnily enough, never leaving a naked flame unattended.

The power of the internet huh?

MissLadyM · 10/12/2019 18:43

I can't believe the stupidity of some people!

AlexaPourMeAnEggnog · 10/12/2019 18:43

🙄

Really OP? I’ve heard it all now.

goodluckdontdie · 10/12/2019 18:46

My Welsh grandmother lit a candle on Christmas Eve which was left to burn all over Christmas. It was a family tradition. It was on a candle holder, on a plate on a stone mantle piece with nothing else near. We survived

Great logic.

I didn't wear a seatbelt until I was about 22 and I survived.

You should always wear a seatbelt.

BHouse19 · 10/12/2019 18:47

Can't believe someone would even consider doing this Biscuit

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 10/12/2019 18:49

No. Don't do it

Sb74 · 10/12/2019 18:50

Seriously, you have to ask? I’m not sure you should have candles at all if you think like that?! How ridiculous.

Prevegen4U · 10/12/2019 18:51

Many years ago someone lit a candle in my house and the curtains caught fire. The house was gutted and I lost everything I owned. Luckily no lives were lost - even the cats found their out.

Sb74 · 10/12/2019 18:53

@sometimedaisy. Ha ha 😂 made me chuckle. Indeed it is.

Purpleartichoke · 10/12/2019 18:53

We were rarely allowed candles in the house growing Up. Only during formal dinners with candlesticks in sturdy holders and lit as we sat down and blown out before anyone got up.

My dad had to help pull a neighbor out of a fire as a child. It was gruesome. He never really got over it.

Sb74 · 10/12/2019 18:55

Is this a secret poll by the fire brigade to check if anyone actually would? Maybe highlighting the issue for those that need it. I’m just in shock that grown adults would need to even discuss this.
