Settle a disagreement: AIBU to leave this advent candle burning throughout December including when everyone is out or in bed?

Picture for context, the candle is inside the glass/metal case.

One of us is saying it's perfectly safe and that's what an advent candle is for. The other is saying a flame should never be left unattended, no matter how safe it seems.

A fireman once told me the biggest cause of house fires in the UK is unattended candles, firefighters hate them.

echt · 09/12/2019 08:06

Here's what the LFB think of candles:

tigger1001 · 09/12/2019 08:09

Seriously can't be a genuine question....

Never, ever leave a lit candle unattended. I wouldn't even be in a different room to a lit candle never mind actually leaving the house....

ChristmasSpirtsOnTheRocksPleas · 09/12/2019 08:09

It would burn through too quickly if you did that.

heartsonacake · 09/12/2019 08:10

Of course it’s not safe. You should never leave a candle unattended.

BlouseAndSkirt · 09/12/2019 08:12

Aargh, these bloody voting things with no way to vote because the AIBU isn’t set out.

Don’t leave bloody lit flames unattended.

BlouseAndSkirt · 09/12/2019 08:13

OPPS, SORRY! The AIBU was in the title. The ‘theoretical ‘ message distracted me.

Oysterbabe · 09/12/2019 08:13

Aargh, these bloody voting things with no way to vote because the AIBU isn’t set out.

It's annoying. I always vote yabu if the voting makes no sense.

Autumntoowet · 09/12/2019 08:16

This is so wrong. My DH is a firefighter and to be honest he didn’t risk his life for situations that are plain stupid and irresponsible.
Which then of course will take the engine away from another fire.
First, that candle should not be placed on that fluffy carpet thing that is for starters.
A solid surface that can tolerate heat is what you need. And no, it can’t be left unattended.
It is fantastic that my DH spends his life dedicated to caring for people that don’t care whilst earning what a politician spends on breakfast.

Autumntoowet · 09/12/2019 08:17

I meant “I wish he didn’t risk his life for”

MabelMoo23 · 09/12/2019 08:19

What the actual fuck?

Do you want to burn your house down?

rhubarbcrumbles · 09/12/2019 08:24

Of course YABU. Do you want to risk your house burning down?

Instatwat · 09/12/2019 08:25

Of course you would be unreasonable.

Jeezo, are you actively trying to prove the natural selection theory?

LaurieFairyCake · 09/12/2019 08:26

I had no idea you were entering the Darwin awards this year!

Congratulations OP, hope you win Grin

TARSCOUT · 09/12/2019 08:28

I had a candle like that explode, luckily I was in the room. Never have live flames now!

Justgorgeous · 09/12/2019 08:28

Is this a joke question? Please tell me it is ? Terrifying that someone would even ask this.

EasilyDistracted77 · 09/12/2019 08:35

Thank you! I cannot WAIT to show my husband your responses!

For info, the 'fire' in the grate is a poster and not real.

Andysbestadventure · 09/12/2019 08:37

That is a decorative case. It is not a proper candle case. DO NOT.

SnorkMaiden81 · 09/12/2019 08:38

This is one of the most absurd AIBU's I've ever heard.

Your DH is a pillock.

NettleTea · 09/12/2019 08:43

That picture is a house fire waiting to happen

Littlemeadow123 · 09/12/2019 08:53

Just so your husband cant say that this is female hysterics making us all say that leaving a candle unsupervised is dangerous, I asked some of my male friends.

They all say that it is one of the daftest, irresponsible and dangerous things that they have ever heard.

goingtoneedabiggercar · 09/12/2019 08:56

I don't even leave a candle lit to go to the loo. Your husband is BVU.

AJPTaylor · 09/12/2019 09:02

Friends daughter had her house burn after leaving a candle alight downstairs. Lucky to escape with their lives. They lost literally everything.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 09/12/2019 09:08

Not sure which way round the voting should be - but YABVU to leave the candle burning unattended.

It seems so obvious that I'm not quite sure if your post is a genuine question or just a bit of seasonal public safety education!

diddl · 09/12/2019 09:09

I wouldn't even if the blurb on it says that it's OK.

Have seen one that says to light on Dec 1st & leave to burn until Christmas Eve(!!!!) and others to just burn an amount every day.
