DH ordered me a surprise present from John Lewis.
It was just delivered - wrapped in thin plastic, visible for the whole world to see. No box. WHY??????
Surprise ruined!!

When DH orders me stuff he gets it delivered to his work or uses Click and Collect. Seems wise if it's a surprise.

nanbread · 07/12/2019 20:06

I can understand why you're annoyed and it does seem weird, I've never seen anything from JL delivered in clear packaging before so I assume it's new.

Maybe it's biodegradable or recycled polyethylene?

Beautiful3 · 07/12/2019 20:07

I would be miffed too. I fully expect boxes hiding my purchases from the children.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 07/12/2019 20:09

All the righteous indignation at perceived error.it’s all v overstated.such hyperbole
Some folk love to complain to customer service knowing they can’t tell you to get a grip

KatherineJaneway · 07/12/2019 20:09

Amazon do that.

Shopped with Amazon since 2001 and never had anything delivered in see through plastic.

Dowser · 07/12/2019 20:10

Yanbu op
Can’t understand how so many people think you are

My dd had an organic children’s clothing company... everything was sent out in green biodegradable bags

Wasn’t too hard

Cos you’re an adult... you can’t have a surprise
Oh what a joyless brexshite world we live in

Sarcelle · 07/12/2019 20:10

Seems to be a thing. I got a radio from Amazon the other day. It came in the manufacturer's box, no other packaging. With the Amazon label stuck on the box. I did think at the time if I had bought it as a present it would have looked odd with the Amazon label stuck on it. I am all for reducing packaging but there needs to be a bit of sense and thought attached.

Appreciateyourthoughts · 07/12/2019 20:10

PPPLLLEEEAASSSEE I'm going to burst!! What was the gift?? Smile

expatinspain · 07/12/2019 20:10

OP, come on now, how long have you been on MN? You are absolutely not allowed to be excited/surprised/bothered about birthdays or Christmas after the age of 10, otherwise you are grabby/pathetic/ 🎅🏼

Marmitepasta · 07/12/2019 20:12

I think yanbu and people are being mean.

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 20:15

expat, Very true! Grin Should have known better. Been here since 2006 (under many name changes)

I don't think you are unreasonable OP. It's not that hard to bag up a package and obscure the item while it is being transported and delivered.

I ordered some personalised items recently and added a late order on - the maker dropped them off personally and made sure that the recipient (named on two items) wasn't able to see them when she handed them over.

virginpinkmartini · 07/12/2019 20:16

Lol you can always trust the contrarian-for-the-sake-of-it AIBU crowd come in their droves, especially if it's a chance for people to virtue signal. In this case about recycling and being too grown up for surprises Hmm

Of course YANBU. He bought you the pressie for Christmas. If he didn't care about you being surprised then he would have just given you the money/ handed it to you on any old Wednesday.

And I expect all those on here talking down about OPs disappointment won't be bothering with wrapping paper this year, as the mystery is too babyish.

Celebelly · 07/12/2019 20:17

Amazon often say on the page when something comes in packaging that says what's inside. You can then choose to have it delivered in plain packaging. Quite a few bigger items we've bought from Amazon have just been in the manufacturer's box with a label stuck on.

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 20:19

Appreciate, I'm afraid that would just give cause for more mean remarks from some posters.
There was no point in attempting to lie to dh and pretend I hadn't seen what it was, and I've shown how thrilled I am/would have been on the day. It's just a shame, that's all.
By the way, I'm 56. Does that mean I shouldn't like to receive surprise gifts? I've got some surprises for dh too. According to some on here I should leave them out for him to stumble across because, you know, he's an adult.

For the first time, I had something delivered last week (not from JL) that was also not packaged, and just had a label stuck to the clear plastic. So as if someone had just picked it from the shelf and stuck a label on.

I can see that it reduces waste, but at this time of year in particular, I think stores should inform purchasers if it's not going to be in opaque packaging.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 07/12/2019 20:20

He should have sourced it from Selfridges, they use oodles of packaging.

Aderyn19 · 07/12/2019 20:23

I agree with you OP - it should be obvious that lots of parcels are Christmas presents, so it should be a given that packaging isn't transparent. I would also expect it to be boxed, to avoid damage.
Reducing unnecessary packaging means not using big boxes and tons of wrapping for little items, it doesn't mean not packaging it properly at all.

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 20:23

He did in fact tell me he was expecting a parcel and to let him get the door, but he was down the garden at the time, and didn't hear the bell. But it shouldn't have been a problem as, had it been in a box, I would have had no idea what it was.

Angela. You've been here a long time. You know the rules.

What was in the bag?

undercoveraessedai · 07/12/2019 20:31

Ehhhh I'm with you OP, surprises are lovely and most of my online orders are electrical/camera related so I'd be cross if it wasn't in a plain box - makes it very much more tempting to steal and impossible to leave in my usual safe places for deliveries, surely?!

saraclara · 07/12/2019 20:31

Shopped with Amazon since 2001 and never had anything delivered in see through plastic.

@KatherineJaneway, my Amazon order arrived three days ago exactly that way. Just as it would be on a store's shelf, but with a label stuck on. I referred to it further up the thread but didn't mention it was Amazon.

saraclara · 07/12/2019 20:33

I'm guessing that this is a new thing - both from JL and Amazon. Unfortunate that they're rolling it out in December though.

Newmummy64 · 07/12/2019 20:38

Yes perhaps they should have concealed the contents BUT you're posting on here for people's opinions. Don't be offended when people don't agree with you.

FurrySlipperBoots · 07/12/2019 20:44

Mumsnetters are really weird about presents! I'm with you OP. I've had several of these incidences, sometimes even with a picture of the product on the outside of the packaging. It's a real shame. At least it sounds like something you'd really like so that beats a lot of mens' 'surprise' presents to their wives. The year my dad bought my mum an ironing board was memorable...
