DH ordered me a surprise present from John Lewis.
It was just delivered - wrapped in thin plastic, visible for the whole world to see. No box. WHY??????
Surprise ruined!!

At this time of year especially stuff should be concealed. Amazon warns if stuff will come in packaging which reveals contents and offers you the option to have it concealed. Even my Alexa no longer announces what's in the deliveries as it's gone in to holiday mode!

SonjaMorgan · 07/12/2019 19:37

Maybe it's for his girlfriend. Surprise!

But being serious retailers need to cut down on plastic. Could he not have had it delivered to work or picked it up in person?

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 19:38

By "great lengths," I mean he always puts a lot of thought into things I might like, according to things we've done over the last year. It shouldn't be relevant and I don't want to labour the point, but this gift has a link to my dad, who died very recently. I would never have guessed he'd done this, but as soon as I saw the delivery man arriving, I knew what it was.
Had it been in a box/thick opaque bag (as every other delivery we've ever had has been) I wouldn't have known.

People like to be disagreeable just for the sake of it. Of course it is a shame that the surprise is ruined. Yes, you still have a lovely gift but I see why you are disappointed with JL for not making more effort to conceal.

TulipCat · 07/12/2019 19:40

Did he pay extra for the gift wrap service? If not then their job is simply to get it to you packaged safely. My dh always has stuff delivered to work if he doesn't want me to know about it as I always get home first!

dreamyflower · 07/12/2019 19:40

He should have done click and collect 😉 I did that for my boys so merrily collected them and they were in nice thick black parcel bags. It's the way shopping is going- Amazon are doing it a lot too. You were surprised still when it came right? So he still did a good job.

BennyTheBall · 07/12/2019 19:40

Such sanctimony on here.

Of course it shouldn't have been visible. I'd be annoyed too.

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 19:41

Could he not have had it delivered to work or picked it up in person?

There should have been no need, had it been packaged properly.

I don't think yabu, it could at least be coloured plastic so you couldn't see through it! I would be annoyed if I had bought something for someone and they delivered it like this

StrayWoman · 07/12/2019 19:41

Ha, sorry but "great lengths to source something" is not the same as ordering a delivery from the JL website.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 07/12/2019 19:41

If your DH really wanted the present to be a surprise, he should have arranged for it to be delivered to his work address, or arranged to collect it from JL.

UnaCorda · 07/12/2019 19:42

dh knows it, and went to great lengths to source something...

Is he the Man from Del Monte? I don't think ordering something online counts as "sourcing". Hmm

VenusTiger · 07/12/2019 19:44

He should’ve ticked the gift option OP

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 07/12/2019 19:45

If they are cutting down on plastic then that's a good thing.

Sorry!

dellacucina · 07/12/2019 19:45

I just checked the JL website and there is an option you can tick to indicate an item you are ordering is a gift (though admittedly it is a gift receipt/message option rather than just the straight question).

Therefore I think you are being unreasonable and your husband should have been more careful - unless he did in fact tick this box.

Aridane · 07/12/2019 19:46

But being serious retailers need to cut down on plastic

Which wrapping in see through plastic rather than putting in a cardboard box really doesn't achieve

CallmeAngelina · 07/12/2019 19:46

FFS, some of you are a miserable load of old so-and-sos!

We have loads of parcels delivered here (and we don't even expect our neighbours to take them in for us either, so not guilty of that MN crime), and they ALL come in disguised packaging. There would have been no issue at all if this had been the case.

OP posts:
allthegoodusernameshavegone · 07/12/2019 19:46

What’s the gift?

Thorilicious · 07/12/2019 19:47

It normally states on the website an item won't be delivered boxed. If that's the case, you have a DH problem for not reading it properly...

80sMum · 07/12/2019 19:48

I think YAB a bit U OP.
Why does it matter that you've had your surprise now, rather than in a couple of weeks' time? It's still a surprise, surely?

KatherineJaneway · 07/12/2019 19:49

Never known JL to deliver in see through plastic. Always a box or bag. Are you sure it wasn't a delivery direct from the manufacturer.

Notodontidae · 07/12/2019 19:49

John Lewis assumed you had a cunning plan, like your DH would be home before you and hide it. Why didn't he get it delivvered to a neighbour, what a numpty.

Elodie2019 · 07/12/2019 19:50

I want to know what the surprise is (was meant to be)!

Elodie2019 · 07/12/2019 19:52

I also think you still had your surprise! Enjoy your gift!

VenusTiger · 07/12/2019 19:52

It normally states on the website an item won't be delivered boxed. If that's the case, you have a DH problem for not reading it properly...

Which will explain why OP is ranting on here rather than her DH speaking to JL about it.
