DH ordered me a surprise present from John Lewis.
It was just delivered - wrapped in thin plastic, visible for the whole world to see. No box. WHY??????
Surprise ruined!!

OP , your posts make no sense. First you said you took delivery because your DH was in the garden. Then you said your DH signed for the delivery and you have only glimpsed the item through glass.

Care to explain what actually happened?

CallmeAngelina · 08/12/2019 19:52

DH told me he was expecting a delivery of my present and he would get the door.
The delivery didn't arrive within the notified time-slot.
Some 3 hours later, the doorbell rang. I was in the loo (since you ask) and dh down the garden. I headed towards the front door before whoever it was could leave thinking we weren't in and arrived just as a) the man opened the outside porch door and entered to leave the gift there and b) dh came racing through from the kitchen to intercept.
I therefore "saw" the outline of the gift through the internal glass front door, although dh moved ahead of me to take over.
I then turned away and went back upstairs.
Is that enough detail?

It seems odd though to start a thread complaining about how a delivered item was packaged only to have it turn out that you don't actually really know how it was packaged at all. I don't think it's particularly fair to try and lose a retailer business on the basis of that level of information.

Funguy · 08/12/2019 20:03

You are lucky it didnt have a tarantula in it as my last package from JL did...
I nearly shat myself. Maybe hence the clear packaging lol.
I did complain to JL but they were very sarcastic. Ridiculous really.

Youreckon · 08/12/2019 20:56

IME JL delivery has always been rubbish.

  1. Ceramic pots with no protective wrapping at all delivered loose and therefore smashed into a million pieces (Not even bubblewrap or tissue paper)
  1. A Hugo Boss coat with the security tag still on it ConfusedSo I ended up having to go to the store anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️
  1. Showergels with lids leaking

First world problems and I don’t use them any more.

Menora · 08/12/2019 21:07

The works delivered some books today in cardboard and the delivery guy didn’t bother to knock and they all got wet on the front porch for god knows how many hours. We were all in!

EffYouSeeKaye · 08/12/2019 21:17

Oh my this is still going???

Selfessness · 08/12/2019 21:44

I find it rather sad how in a world still plagued with poverty, famine, child abuse, incurable cancers, epidemic child mental health, climate change and hundreds of other important issues, a spoilt surprise and wrong packaging can cause such distress to one individual. But bless your life if that's your biggest concern, I wish my life was that easy. ❤️

CallmeAngelina · 08/12/2019 22:04

Such distress?! Is there something wrong with your comprehension skills?
RTFT, fgs.
I was mildly disappointed.

"I was mildly disappointed."

That's not how you're coming across tbf.

LiquoricePickle · 09/12/2019 05:07

Obviously you're not being unreasonable. A bunch of other people on this thread are though...

nativityhumbug · 09/12/2019 05:34

Yanbu. I bought my husband a really lovely gift on ebay. The person stuffed it into an envelope and when it arrived, it had ripped and he saw what was in it. I was so disappointed!

chamenanged · 09/12/2019 05:37

My god there are some truly horrible people on this thread Shock you must feel you're in a parallel universe OP! I particularly enjoyed the person who said you were on a short fuse and then when your fuse wasn't actually short enough to rise to it immediately she just said it again Hmm you're absolutely right that it says an awful lot about those posters and nothing about you. Also nice of some people to kick a recently bereaved daughter with "if that's your biggest problem" yadda yadda.

I love surprises and so does my partner - we would be gutted if this happened. We recently had an item from JL damaged during delivery and didn't hear back from them within the time they said they would, but they did eventually phone and give us £150 back, so don't lose heart if you don't hear from them promptly. So sorry about your dad - hope you still enjoy your Christmas surprise Wine

Aridane · 09/12/2019 06:13

It seems a bit off to be publicly naming and shaming a company on the basis of second hand information from a source that has "gone vague."

😂

Because nobody in the course of history on Mumsnet has ever said anything bad about John Lewis or in fact any retailer Hmm

ChristmasCroissant · 09/12/2019 09:10

I was thinking about this thread earlier because we had a delivery this morning (keyboard and stand for DD's birthday) and it wasn't wrapped at all! The courier asked if it was OK to bring it in and said they'd had a few deliveries where the person it was for was in and saw it. Obviously the new way of sending stuff!

ChristmasCroissant · 09/12/2019 09:19

My delivery wasn't from JL, just to make that clear (recipient is also home but ill in bed so managed to hide it!)

Gonetoget · 09/12/2019 10:27

"It seems a bit off to be publicly naming and shaming a company on the basis of second hand information from a source that has "gone vague."

Any retailer worth its salt would take note and stop sending parcels in transparent packaging, or advise customers of likelihood of orders arriving this way, so they can make alternative arrangements if need be.

MoiraRose · 09/12/2019 11:31

Perhaps because retailers are under immense pressures from customers, government and shareholders to reduce the amount of packaging that they use

As many others have said, swapping a cardboard box for plastic packaging is not in the slightest bit environmentally friendly Hmm

CallmeAngelina · 09/12/2019 12:23

reduce the amount of packaging that they use

Well, they certainly ticked that box! No packaging at all. Literally handed over the bare product. Imagine say, a pewter vase (not that, but for illustration purposes).

OP posts:
Tippexy · 09/12/2019 12:38

I don’t believe for a second that John Lewis, or any firm, would deliver a vase or ornament etc with absolutely no packaging.

Gonetoget · 09/12/2019 13:16

@ Tippexy. Do you think that the op is working for a rival department store and has decided to start a smear campaign about their packaging practises.

CallmeAngelina · 09/12/2019 13:16

Well you should have been round our house on Saturday evening then! Dh couldn't believe it either.

OP posts:
Youreckon · 09/12/2019 17:25

@Tippexy
You don’t need to believe it. That’s your choice. I’m not a liar.

SnapCackleFlop · 09/12/2019 17:40

@Tippexy why do you not believe it?

Is it because it sounds ridiculous? That the goods are so likely to get damaged? That is seems so careless? Because it’s unusual and because everyone can see what you’ve bought.....

I think that’s the whole point of the thread and why the op was frustrated.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 09/12/2019 20:26

Love that all the sofa sergeants are reviewing the evidence and ascertaining op whereabouts
Stores well known & otherwise can and do get delivery spectacularly wrong
I ordered a cot from mothercare they tipped it over the wall damaging it
Simply because someone on here hasn’t experienced poor or inadequate delivery doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen
