DH ordered me a surprise present from John Lewis.
It was just delivered - wrapped in thin plastic, visible for the whole world to see. No box. WHY??????
Surprise ruined!!

My boyfriend gets my Christmas presents delivered to my sisters. And my sister’s boyfriend has her presents delivered here. Even seeing the packaging of the company can be a give away. He should have arranged a different delivery option if he knew you were taking delivery of it.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 08/12/2019 16:43

I don’t think any delivery needs that amount of convoluted planning.really

CupoTeap · 08/12/2019 16:45

Thank you @Aderyn19 I wonder what the vote was

SnapCackleFlop · 08/12/2019 16:56

I don’t know why you’ve had so many shitty replies..... I think if you’d instead said how great that companies are now using NO packaging at all you’d have been equally ripped to shreds. I think people just enjoy being dicks.

It does seem to be a new thing. It was my son’s birthday last month (he turned 9) and I was so pleased with myself that I managed to find a great present online for him. It was very unusual and I knew he’d be thrilled to get it on his birthday and I couldn’t bloody believe that it was delivered with no packaging at all either. They stuck a barcode label and address labels directly onto the box (the kind that don’t peel off without ripping the box underneath). He also saw it when it was delivered.

If I’d had the slightest clue this was a new thing I would have ordered from somewhere else, click and collected or had it delivered to a different address but I think until it happens you can’t imagine a company doing it (if for no other reason than it makes reselling it difficult if the customer returns it because the box is so damaged).

I’m also sorry for your recent loss and it’s lovely that your DH wanted to get you something thoughtful.

💐😊

Thanks, Snap.

RTFT, Cocobean.

Cocobean made a perfectly valid point, if it was that important your DH should have had it delivered elsewhere. Maybe her DH is more careful with surprises and doesn't rely on packaging to be opaque.

saraclara · 08/12/2019 17:23

Yep. That's exactly what happened with mine. Stuck straight on to the item. Admittedly the manufacturer had applied a clingfilm level of polythene to the box, but removing the label would simply have pulled that off. So had it been a gift I'd have been screwed.

CallmeAngelina · 08/12/2019 17:28

And I've explained countless times why not.
The "rtft" was with a weary tone.
Not going to go through it all again.

EskewedBeef · 08/12/2019 17:31

Does your husband know you've seen it? I have rtft, but I've forgotten the details.

RedLipstickHighHeels · 08/12/2019 17:42

The details have changed, the flimsy wrapped in plastic item was delivered completely unwrapped
Myself et al are wondering how was it delivered?Where was the name, address, packing note
Op doesn’t know that level of detail and reports she certainly won’t be making enquiries to her partner who signed for the item

MinervaSaidThat · 08/12/2019 19:03

And I've explained countless times why not.

I think you only explained that he can't get parcels delivered to work.

Cohle · 08/12/2019 19:04

It seems a bit off to be publicly naming and shaming a company on the basis of second hand information from a source that has "gone vague."

poorstudent1010 · 08/12/2019 19:06

In the past I have had items shipped from Amazon in the item’s retail packaging, they literally just stuck the shipping label on the retail box! Including on an expensive Epson printer, which was unexpected delivered a day early and left in my porch - luckily no one pilfered it!

Amazon gives you the option for shipping packaging though.

CallmeAngelina · 08/12/2019 19:25

Second hand information?
The item arrived at our door unwrapped. It was ordered from John Lewis. There may or may not have been a delivery note, I don't know, but I don't see what difference it makes.
I assumed it had plastic wrapping as I saw it through a patterned glass door. DH reports that it had no wrapping at all. He saw it up close and took it off the delivery driver. I didn't.
I could go and accuse him of lying about it but I won't. He's gone vague because it is still my Christmas gift we're talking about and he has put it away somewhere.
He has emailed JL to ask them if it is standard practice for such an item to be delivered in this way (three hours outside the notified delivery slot too, if that matters).
Anything else?

OP posts:
saraclara · 08/12/2019 19:25

It hadn't occurred to me that I don't have a paper invoice/receipt for the item that arrived with just a label stuck on the retail box. Presumably I just find it online with Amazon?
Presumably that will be the same for OP's DH.

poorstudent1010 · 08/12/2019 19:33

Some retailers don’t include paper invoices, pretty sure none of my sold-by-amazon orders have. ZARA gives you a barcode on your order confirmation email to take in store etc.

CallmeAngelina · 08/12/2019 19:34

you're really on a short fuse if anyone dare disagree with you
I'm getting a little irritated with the nit-picking on here, for sure, and having to repeat myself numerous times. Slightly more irritated than the (not massive) disappointment I felt on DH's behalf that his thoughtful surprise had been spoiled. And before anyone leaps to attack me for having used the Angry emoji, MN haven't invented a [mild disappointment] one yet.

John Lewis has really gone downhill recently. I tried exchanging a gift I’d been given for a smaller size In store but as it was an online purchase they refused to do it in store. They wanted me to return the item and ask the person that sent me the gift to buy a new one in a smaller size Crown Hmm

saraclara · 08/12/2019 19:39

For the doubters. Excuse scrappy bits of paper hiding address and data codes.

Effing John Lewis!!!
FenellaMaxwell · 08/12/2019 19:42

To be fair, @saraclara if your significant other got you a glorified thermostat as your Christmas present, you have bigger problems than the transparent packaging Grin

CallmeAngelina · 08/12/2019 19:44

Grin Grin

OP posts:
Cassandrainthenight · 08/12/2019 19:44

@EskewedBeef
I had a de-humidifier delivered (not a present Xmas Grin and not from John Lewis) last week just in the manufacturer's box.
It had one of those plastic pockets stuck to the side, with address sticker on it and receipt inside the pocket.
However yesterday went to Waitrose for my click and collect order from JL (was enough there for free delivery to the house, but always do click and collect due to worrying about not being home or gift recipients intercepting the gifts)
Stuff was all in boxes and grey plastic bags. I couldn't understand the number of boxes, why 4, turned out one of the substantial boxes contained just one fork 😮 in these big blown up packets of air. The fork turned out to be the wrong one(I thought it matched my set but it was much bigger) and I'm definitely not sending it back in the box, will just wrap it in paper and stick in a bag.

Incidentally plastic bags could be more environmentally friendly in the sense that much more can be packed in the same vehicle so less fuel/fumes/time used for the same delivery.

Also even years ago had plants and garden ornaments delivered without any packaging or in sturdy polythene sheet tied up on the top, rugs were always delivered in see through plastic.

Anyway, this thread has helped to be prepared for more and more items arriving "bare"

CallmeAngelina · 08/12/2019 19:45

But at least it's in a box, sara!
