To be sick of ‘turkey voting for Christmas’ comments if you are voting for a party somebody doesn’t like

It’s a stupid analogy.

If I voted Labour, there would be some parts of their manifesto that would benefit me. Same for Conservatives and Lib Dems.

There are also things from each of the main parties that wouldn’t benefit me.

So AIBU to think I’ll vote for who the fuck I like?

And merry Christmas.

Nobody is stopping you voting how you like though.

That saying reflects the utter bafflement of lots of us.

Manifestos are bollocks you know.

OwlinaTree · 07/12/2019 17:26

I think this comment comes from feeling like people are being misled into voting for something that is not beneficial to them, not that someone disagrees with you.

People voting for more cuts when they are the ones that will lose out for eg.

missingdale · 07/12/2019 17:27

I know where he saying comes from but just because Labour (e.g.) might put forward one thing that might disadvantage me it doesn’t mean that everything they might do will. It’s finding a best fit, not a perfect match.

Well unless you are very wealthy, anyone who votes Tory IS a turkey voting for Christmas. You may be fed up with it, but being fed up with it doesn't make it any less true.

If you are happy with a no deal Brexit at the end of 2020, happy with losing the NHS, not needing a state education for your children, not needing libraries, and are unconcerned with the possible repeal of the Human Right Act, crack on.

1Morewineplease · 07/12/2019 17:28

I feel the same as you. Trouble is, I’m still trying to figure out which party has more of the policies I do favour.
Merry Christmas to you too!

TheABC · 07/12/2019 17:28

Your vote, your choice. There's plenty of information available for each of the parties, plus tactical voting websites.

SquareAsABlock · 07/12/2019 17:29

If voting for the Tories (or whoever) works for you, then go for it. I associate the term with people who will be directly negatively affected by a political group voting for them. For example, poor or disabled people or those working in the public sector voting for the Tories.

Miljea · 07/12/2019 17:29

Vote how you like.

But be aware that if 10 years of the Tories has encouraged you to vote for them again; and that if you have no understanding of what the oncoming car crash of a potentially No Deal, or certainly a Bad Deal Brexit will do for you and yours, unless you are an oligarch...

You are a turkey voting for Christmas.

BlaueLagune · 07/12/2019 17:29

Just to say you are not alone there, I think most people vote for the party they dislike the least, over the one they like the most, apart from those who are tribal in their allegiances and will always vote for a red or blue rosette regardless of who's standing and regardless of policies.

Cyberworrier · 07/12/2019 17:30

☝️What BlaueLagune said.

Weescot · 07/12/2019 17:31

I’m on minimum wage. Torys will
Give me more money in my pay packet. Labour have come out and said they will be raising taxes for everyone. I’m voting Tory. I also believe they won’t destroy the economy and the country and Labour most definitely will, which will also benefit me. I couldn’t give a shit if you think it’s turkeys voting for Christmas.

AgeLikeWine · 07/12/2019 17:34

‘Turkeys voting for Christmas” doesn’t mean “voting for a party I don’t like”.

It means voting against your own economic interests.

A classic example was Sunderland which voted heavily for Leave in the EU referendum, despite the fact that the enormous Nissan car factory is by far the biggest local employer and exports most of its production to the EU.

Cyberworrier · 07/12/2019 17:34

Are you reliant on the NHS, Weescot? And do you live in Scotland? Tories predicted to be decimated there.

missingdale · 07/12/2019 17:35

But Sunderland might just, maybe, possibly, have voted to leave for reasons that had nothing whatsoever to do with cars.

OP posts:
missingdale · 07/12/2019 17:36

The NHS is not going anywhere. It needs reforming, though.

OP posts:
SolitaryGrape · 07/12/2019 17:36

I also believe they won’t destroy the economy and the country

Then you are a wilfully uninformed or deluded turkey voting for Christmas.

SolitaryGrape · 07/12/2019 17:36

UNDER-informed.

SquareAsABlock · 07/12/2019 17:37

@Weescot, are you taking the piss? On what planet have those who are on minimum wage ever been better off under the Tories?? Labour are not raising taxes for everyone either, ffs.

missingdale · 07/12/2019 17:38

This thread is proving my point Confused

OP posts:
SquareAsABlock · 07/12/2019 17:39

That's not the point. Whatever their reasons, they voted for something that was very likely to harm their local economy. So they might be pissed off about lack of jobs or growth in their area but voted for something that would cause more of the same.

wafflyversatile · 07/12/2019 17:40

Usually it's about poor people who vote tory.

I dont think I've seen rich people described as turkeys voting for christmas. Policies that provide better services and that are better for poor people benefit society as a whole.

JasonPollack · 07/12/2019 17:40

@weescot increasing minimum wage is a Labour policy. Labour are not raising taxes for everyone that is untrue. Unless you're doing a fuck-ton of hours and somehow taking home £80,000 then your taxes will not rise under Labour.

And lovely that you ‘believe’ that the Tories won’t destroy the economy, but the IFS have a rather different analysis. They aren’t impressed by Labour’s spending plan either. But my take is that Labour will be taxing high earners more, proportionately, than low earners like you, and will invest seriously in the public sector. How can anyone believe that Boris or Jacob Rees Mogg actually care about the welfare of ordinary people?
Not to mention Brexit. Everyone voting Tory, thanks for not giving a shit about NI! It’s one thing to impose such a shit show on yourselves but spare a thought for the parts of the UK who will be worst affected.
