To be sick of ‘turkey voting for Christmas’ comments if you are voting for a party somebody doesn’t like

It’s a stupid analogy.

If I voted Labour, there would be some parts of their manifesto that would benefit me. Same for Conservatives and Lib Dems.

There are also things from each of the main parties that wouldn’t benefit me.

So AIBU to think I’ll vote for who the fuck I like?

And merry Christmas.

Whiterose i was referring to those talking about labour increasing taxes for everyone....the stuff that is simply not true and of course cannot be backed up with a source. Those talking about how they will destroy the economy despite many academics and economists supporting the manifesto (because Dave down the pub said so so it must be true).

whiteroseredrose · 07/12/2019 20:24

We will give workers a stake in the companies they work for – and a share of the profits they help create – by requiring large companies to set up Inclusive Ownership Funds (IOFs). Up to 10% of a company will be owned collectively by employees, with dividend payments distributed equally among all, capped at £500 a year, and the rest being used to top up the Climate Apprenticeship Fund. The cap will rise to ensure that no more than 25% of dividends raised by IOFs are redistributed in this way.

It's in the section entitled Work.

That's my pension he's going to give to the workers. Unless he's going to use public funds to buy the shares that he's going to give to the workers, he's stealing my pension.

Walkaround · 07/12/2019 20:27

missingdale - yes of course YABU. People are every bit as entitled to express their opinions on your voting choices as you are entitled to vote however you want. Likewise, a turkey might well vote for Christmas because in the run up to it, he gets incredibly well fed and looked after and likes all the Christmas music...

whiteroseredrose · 07/12/2019 20:28

Plus if he's going to renationalise public services, is he going to pay the market rate for the shares or pay what he fancies? Or nothing at all?

Either way it's not going to give anyone any confidence in putting their money into our stock market. People are likely to get their money out, shares will go down and boom my pension pot is worth very little.

ListeningQuietly · 07/12/2019 20:39

whiterose
How about you actually read the Labour manifesto rather than the Daily Heil spin on it

renationalising the railways will cost nothing at all (it just involves letting the franchises lapse)
the rest will be funded by bonds

Brexit is a MUCH bigger risk to your pension pot that Corbyn
(as per the FT, the Economist, Forbes and Bloomberg)

fligglepige · 07/12/2019 22:31

This is why you can't trust the media.

To be sick of ‘turkey voting for Christmas’ comments if you are voting for a party somebody doesn’t like
ReadtheSmallPrint · 07/12/2019 22:41

whiteroseredrose Labour are not giving your shares to workers. If that was the case, they would be able to sell those shares.

Labour are going to ‘hold’ the shares in trust and allow the workers to receive a capped dividend for them. In effect, it’s the government that keeps those shares.

Don’t worry though - it’s never going to happen. This is the kind of ridiculous policy that will end up in the courts the moment they try to enforce it (if they even get that far). The only ones to really benefit will be the lawyers.

raskolnikova · 07/12/2019 22:44

It is the most overused phrase. And ridiculously simplistic.

Actually I'd say that accolade goes to 'Get Brexit done'.

KenDodd · 07/12/2019 22:56

I saw some bloke with his kids on TV, he was collecting food from a food bank for them because he had no money to feed them. He said he would be voting for Boris. This bloke absolutely is a turkey voting for Christmas, food banks hardly existed before the recent run of Tories took over running the country.

At the same time, I'm going to be voting for a party that'll tax me more (happy to pay more so people don't have to suffer the indignity of visiting food banks) so maybe you could also describe me as a turkey voting for Christmas.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/12/2019 23:27

@KenDodd.
He’s exactly the type of person I’m talking about and I think that’s my point well and truly proven.

I think that’s the point we’ll and truly proven op.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 07/12/2019 23:38

I agree with you op

It’s so condescending people vote for parties for many different reasons as many votes for a number of reasons in the referendum

But you know some twat will decide what the reasons are without having a conversation

Most people don’t want to hear others people’s reasoning they just want to prove them wrong

LunchBoxPolice · 07/12/2019 23:57

I think it’s an excellent analogy for Conservative voters.

AlunWynsKnee · 08/12/2019 00:14

whiterose I don't read that as relating to pensions. When I was private sector my pension was held by a separate company with company trustees. The ownership of my employer was irrelevant to the management of my pension?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/12/2019 00:27

Has anyone seen the picture on Twitter of Boris and a few of his plummed gobbed cronies walking past a homeless bloke.
He should have put his foot out and tripped the fuckers up. What’s he got to lose.
A night in the cells is better than a night the streets.
At least you have a bed and food.

ethelfleda · 08/12/2019 07:57

OP, I think maybe you haven’t understood the meaning of the phrase. Plenty here have explained it though.

Someone’s analogy of a footballer voting for labour was a good one, although not totally accurate. Under Labour, our taxes (as in my households) would rise but we are still voting for them. I think wealth should be distributed far more evenly than it is now. Someone I know described it as being a capitalist with a socialist heart. I like that description.

Another thread also that proves people are reading incorrect news articles or listening to their ill informed mates rather than actually looking at manifestos!

Weescot · 08/12/2019 08:23

Labour have come out and said they are raising taxes for everyone. They have to. Why is no one believing me when it has came out McDonnell’s mouth?

Weescot · 08/12/2019 08:25

I also live in the northeast. Many people I work with are voting Torys. They can’t bring themselves to vote Labour under McDonnell and Corbyn

DippyAvocado · 08/12/2019 08:40

I recognise, for instance, that there are 'things' in, say the Labour manifesto that won't necessarily benefit me, but, guess what? It isn't just about me, it's about my society

This. Not everyone votes for personal gain.

I have a colleague who was complaining the other day about how long it took her to get a GP appointment. She also complains about her working adult children living with her because they can't afford to move out. She will apparently the be voting for Boris. She thinks her parents being able to buy their own council house in the 80s was great so she will always vote Tory (even though this policy almost certainly directly contributed to the fact that there is now no affordable housing for her own DC).

BlueJava · 08/12/2019 08:42

YABU by expressing who you are voting for and then not liking people's reaction. I just don't discuss it. If asked I give a non-commital "not sure yet", "waiting to see another debate" and leave it at that.

strawberrieshortcake · 08/12/2019 09:09

@Miljea stupid and racist! The winning combo. Do you understand that the nhs being sold off has nothing to do with medical professionals from non-British countries working here. Hope you are never in a situation where a ‘forriner’ has to save your life.

Fleetheart · 08/12/2019 09:14

@strawberriesshortcake, have you tagged the wrong poster??

Miljea · 08/12/2019 10:55

😂

Sconio123 · 08/12/2019 11:47

Labour have come out and said they are raising taxes for everyone. They have to. Why is no one believing me when it has came out McDonnell’s mouth?

So an extension to the sugar tax enables you to phrase it as 'raising taxes for everyone'? Whilst technically true, it's a bit flimsy...

And yes I'm aware of the proposed end to the married couples tax break, but not 'everyone' is married. Myself included, so I'm gonna channel my inner Tory and say "I'm alright Jack", on that one.

zsazsajuju · 08/12/2019 11:52

I think the “Turkeys voting for Christmas” is a really patronising statement that the person talking knows your interests better than you. Tbf it’s not always inaccurate.

whiteroseredrose · 08/12/2019 17:27

#AlunWynsKnee but your DC pension is still invested in the stock market regardless of who manages it. So if 10% of your pension pot was invested in Tesco shares and Tesco had to give 10% of its shares to the workers, whether in trust or not, its still going to reduce the value of your investment.
