To ask DD2 to change her cat’s name

I’m posting this on behalf of my DD who is too mortified. She’s expecting her own DC (my DGC) and had picked out a name that only a few of us knew. Let’s say it’s “Honey” (it’s not but just for example)

DD2 out of the blue has got a kitten and has named it Honey, of course.. Confused DD1 is mortified and has asked me to see if I can get DD2 to change the name of the kitten! AIBU to try to do this?

Yes I’ve seen all the “two names in the same family” threads and have no problem with it when it’s people but having the same name as an animal seems potentially offensive?

OP posts:

Given the fraught relationship history I’d say the pets name is least of worries

KerplunkyPants · 07/12/2019 18:24

This is why giving pets human names is not always a good idea.

I agree. Although I really thought Oscar and Rufus for dogs, and Felix for cats was a done deal... Now humans are called them. Give it a few years and Tiddles, Rover or Fluffy might be in the top ten Grin

Drum2018 · 07/12/2019 18:24

DD1’s husband (and father of the child) used to be DD2’s ex

Unless he's dead he'll always be DD2s ex.

I wouldn't get involved. If DD1 wants DD2 to change her cats name then I'm sure she can text her. Stay out of it.

areyouafraidofthedark · 07/12/2019 18:26

Weren't expecting that! How long did he date DD2 for? I think the name should stay tbh. Least DD1 can do lol.

AppleJane · 07/12/2019 18:27

The outcome is the same for both scenarios:

She did know = won't agree to change name
She didn't know = you have no right to ask her to change the name.

Stay well out of it!

DaphneFanshaw · 07/12/2019 18:31

Actually Sausage Rolls, my dts are Fluffy and Tiddles.
They’re family names though, I named them after my DPs Grandma’s cats.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/12/2019 18:32

Why is dd1 mortified?

FizzyGreenWater · 07/12/2019 18:33

Hahahaha

DaphneFanshaw · 07/12/2019 18:34

Maybe because she’s banging her sisters ex.....

FizzyGreenWater · 07/12/2019 18:37

She's taken her man and now she wants her kitten's very soul!

This is awful.

Aycharow · 07/12/2019 18:37

We bought this house off some people whose two children had the same names as our two cats Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/12/2019 18:37

Oops, my apologies. Aaaaah, this is kind of awkward.... Grin

Bluerussian · 07/12/2019 18:38

I would be very flattered if someone named their pet after me and I don't mean 'bluerussian'; I did have a Russian Blue cat though so I suppose one could say I chose my nickname in his honour. He was a splendid cat and had a sensible man's name which suited him.

InsertFunnyUsername · 07/12/2019 18:40

Tell DD1 not to worry, "DD1 child has the same name as DD2 cat" will be quickly forgotten when they find out they both potentially have the same father too...

FizzyGreenWater · 07/12/2019 18:46

Confused I don't think the ex actually fathered the kitten InsertFunyUsername

Winterdaysarehere · 07/12/2019 18:47

Dcat is Henry. 3 of my ds's friends are named after my dcat...
I am sure my dcat doesn't mind one but..

summersherewishiwasnt · 07/12/2019 18:49

Keep well out of this. You cannot win.

InsertFunnyUsername · 07/12/2019 18:51

Was a joke fizzy Confused

NotACleverName · 07/12/2019 18:53

If your eldest is old enough and mature enough to shack up with her sister's ex, I'm sure she can talk to her sister about the name.

Keep out of it.

CoolCarrie · 07/12/2019 18:53

I think your family has more problems than the name of a cat, your dd 1 is pregnant by your dd2 ex partner, bloody hell Christmas around your house will be interesting...!

Auradal · 07/12/2019 18:58

Sorry but I'm pissing myself laughing here. I've been having a really bad day and this has really cheered me up.
No matter how bad things get I'm never going to have this drama in my life of my sister running off with my ex and then stealing my cat's name for her baby.

Sorry for laughing OP.
Don't intervene. If DD1 is really bothered she should speak to DD2 herself.

Tooner · 07/12/2019 18:59

Wind up surely??

SandAndSea · 07/12/2019 19:02

My initial thoughts: Why stop at the name? Maybe she could have the cat as well?

So, no, I wouldn't get involved in this.

YouSawThePlans · 07/12/2019 19:06

Stay out of it OP. DD1 can ask DD2 to pick a different name or she can name her baby after the cat.
It seems likely that DD2 knew about the baby's name or that she knew it was a name her ex liked.
Leave them to sort it out amongst themselves.

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/12/2019 19:08

I'm named after my grandmother's old dog.

Thank god she named me after the Great Dane, if she'd called me after the GSD I'd be Tinkerbell to this day.
