.... then there’s no reason he shouldn’t also be able to self-ID as a Native American, a quadriplegic, a child or even a badger, if that’s how “he” feels in “him”self?

Or am I missing something?

Identifying as anything that you aren't is a crock of shit, in my opinion. You are what you are, end of story.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/12/2019 15:09

today I identified as able bodied.... tomorrow, my condition might remind me that it really does exist.

LoonyLunaLoo · 03/12/2019 15:10

If I self ID as Australian, does that mean I don’t have to come back from my upcoming holiday there? 😂

IcedPurple · 03/12/2019 15:12

I think I'll identify as a multimillionare and put my round-the-world luxury holiday on the gold plated credit card I identify with.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 03/12/2019 15:13

There are legal sanctions for making a false declaration.

Let's unpack this sentence a bit more. A false declaration is only really relevant if the person has done something not permitted, in a way that directly relates to their sex (or assumed 'sex'). Otherwise they are just going about living their life, right?

So that leaves us with:

  1. False claims, where the claim is to a service/product/facility meant for females only;

or

  1. Crime, where the perpetrator's sex is directly relevant (because who cares if your local burglar is male or female?). Which ultimately means sexual assault/rape or similar crimes.

So at very best, these horse/cart "legal sanctions" involve a woman losing out professionally or in terms of her dignity and privacy. At worse it's a woman being raped or otherwise sexually assaulted.

And we already know males are taking female spaces in shortlists and jobs, and we also know that convictions for sexual crime are horrendous.

So tell me again how "legal sanctions" work at anything other than a sop to shut women up?

Ereshkigal · 03/12/2019 15:17

Self-ID, in the jurisdictions in which it applies, is a legal process in which one makes a truthful declaration

But there is no truth involved. It is purely a legal fiction. You get a new copy birth certificate which essentially rewrites history.

crossandperplexed · 03/12/2019 15:19

There is a world of difference between following the requirements of the GRA and self ID.
Both Labour and LibDems have made it very clear that they intend to scrap the former and introduce the latter. The conservatives are swithering.
We have already had awful things happen to women and children as a result of adult males Self ID ing as women and then committing sexual assault and rape.
This will only get more frequent if Self ID becomes law.

It is getting so ridiculous that the powers to be will not be able to control it. How do you police people who identify as animals or birds, such as penguins as I've heard? Can you prosecute a penguin for driving offences, are they able to be taxed. Do I identify as a Neanderthal as my ancestors walked out of Africa 250,000 years ago, am I White African. Should everybody in the world be now classed as African and what of the 100 supposed genders?
I've been called green and cabbage looking, am I now an ALLOTMENT?

XJerseyGirlX · 03/12/2019 15:23

The world has gone mad. In my eyes, you are what you are. People need to accept who they are and own it, not try to be someone else. If you are a man who likes to wear woman's clothes then you exactly that ( a man who wears woman's clothes) not a woman.. that's extreme in my eyes. Its so sad people can't accept the form they are born in. I think it takes a sad, depressed person to need to identify as anything other than themselves. Don't care if i get slated for this, I genuinely feel sorry for them.

YellaHumberElla · 03/12/2019 15:26

There are legal sanctions for making a false declaration

Apart from the complete lack of any way to police this, because it’s a belief and people thoughts. Let’s look at this another way round.

Many people, particularly the young, who thought they were trans are now detransitioning. Many are girls who have grown to accept they may be lesbian, or just non confirming to sex stereotypes imposed by society.

Should those young people be legally sanctioned? Prosecuted or fined perhaps for making the decision to desist? After all, a truthful declaration that is legally enforced must apply equally to all surely?

absopugginglutely · 03/12/2019 15:28

I think live and let live. If people aren't harming anyone then who cares?
I love your OP by the way. It made me laugh!

There's of course the very serious issue of men claiming women's rights but haven't been exposed to the kind of discrimination all their lives as women do.

Also men who identify as women in women's refuges etc.

Not easy.

HyacynthBucket · 03/12/2019 15:30

Shivering Coyote Great idea! I am thinking of self identifying as a man with a large pension, exactly at retirement age - I guess I can self identify as a different age group too.

Makinganewthinghappen · 03/12/2019 15:31

this is one of those things that I can’t get my mind around at all (admittedly there are many!)

I want to identify as many things but I can’t because the people who actually ARE those things would lose out. For example I want to identify as the owner of the house I rent - I’m sure my landlord would be ok with that right?!

EssentialHummus · 03/12/2019 15:33

Yeah, I'm happy to accept self-ID as long as any self-ID trans person needing surgery is happy for me to self-ID as their surgeon.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 03/12/2019 15:36

I identify as = I am not

If you can change the sex on your birth certificate why not the date or location?
No more immigration processes & everyone can be eligible for their pension anytime they feel like it Star

formerbabe · 03/12/2019 15:37

I would like to identify as a pensioner. I know my birth certificate states I was born in the eighties, but I feel much older. I'd like to claim my state pension now.

Devereux1 · 03/12/2019 15:37

Yeah, I'm happy to accept self-ID as long as any self-ID trans person needing surgery is happy for me to self-ID as their surgeon.

daysofpearlyspencer · 03/12/2019 15:38

Google Karen White , Jessica Yaniv, Vancouver Rape Relief centre. The madness is here and it's not stopping, politicians of almost all parties are going along with it, nothing to see here...that will never happen....yada yada yada, meanwhile the rights if women and girls are eroded, children are medicated with off label drugs almost unchecked. But trans rights innit?

crossandperplexed · 03/12/2019 15:42

The really sinister side of transactivism is the pressure on children to identify as the opposite sex and then fast track onto cross sex hormones and surgery. Pushing this into sex and relationship education in primary schools is evil IMO.
We know that the children most at risk are girls on the autistic spectrum who are often gender non-conforming. This is exploitation in my view. These children are vulnerable and not able to give informed consent to any of this.

dontalltalkatonce · 03/12/2019 15:47

I identify as Bill Gates, I now demand that creditors fall over me and offer me credit to buy whatever the hell I want.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/12/2019 15:51

I'm identifying as having done a full day's work already. Hope my boss is ok with that.

Dangerfloof · 03/12/2019 15:53

I'm with Gibbons, gonna change my birth cert to male, then start a court case to alter my age, then self I'd as a older man who paid however many years into the system to get my state pension. No maternity breaks for me.
And if the powers that be wont fo that its gonna be a huge court case, will need funding ppl.

Hagbeth · 03/12/2019 15:57

I will happily address a trans person as she or he, whatever they like, it doesn’t make any difference to me. I will not call a trans woman a woman because they’re not, they’re a trans woman. I won’t use any of the numerous invented pre-nouns either.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 03/12/2019 15:57

‘You are. Or, you are not. There is no identify’
