Tax credits have just put nearly 10k in my bank

Just checked my bank, as I do most days at 12am incase payments have Gone in from my free lance job.
I don’t earn very much so I like to keep an eye.

I have just checked and nearly had a heart attack to see there was 8k in there. Last time I checked I had £113

I quickly scrolled to see where it had come from and it says bank giro - which is usually tax credits/ child benefit, but I get paid on a Friday.
And usually only £63 per week.

I have one child, have not changed circumstances all year. Haven’t contacted them for anything recently either.

WHAT DO I DO?

Northernlurker · 03/12/2019 11:33

Hope it's for you op.

Some years ago the company DH worked for went dramatically bust leaving us with no salary, no holiday pay, no notice. About two days after this we got a cheque for £150 from the council for putting out our recycling correctly. Apparently it was some sort of monthly prize - never heard of it before or since. We've always thought it was a very practical answer to prayer tbh.

thenightsky · 03/12/2019 11:38

When TC first came in, I was given about £900. I checked and it was all fine and above board. SIX YEARS LATER THE BASTARDS ASKED FOR IT BACK! I had to negotiate to pay so much a month for loads of months. It was awful.

Ated · 03/12/2019 11:40

If you aren't sure about the money and where it came from then purchase premium bonds with it and leave it there. You have the chance of some wins and still, have the money if it needs to be returned.

LakieLady · 03/12/2019 11:47

we had a nightmare with CTC, they kept changing the amount and then when they wrote to us with an amendment the figures for what they said we had been paid didn't match what we had actually been paid. We went back and forth for years with them threatening us and us sending them bank statements to prove what we had actually received

They may well have been right. Tax credits are based on taxable, ie gross, income. What you have received is net income (unless your income is so low that you're below the tax threshold).

LakieLady · 03/12/2019 11:51

I'm another one crossing fingers it's money meant for you. I had been underpaid a disability premium for my disabled son when he was little. I had no idea what benefits I was entitled to. I got a cheque in the post for £7K & nearly fainted. I told a friend with child on DLA to check hers - she got £10K. I was just very lucky someone at DWP noticed.

Not luck, but the result of a court case. The DWP were told that they had to identify and pay arrears of disability premiums, and have had to fork out shedloads. One client of mine got £13k, my brother got £8k; the arrears payments have been massive.

LakieLady · 03/12/2019 11:54

*Would be interesting to hear if anyone who has had a genuine rebate, received correspondence about it before the transfer?

I had an unexpected tax rebate from my first ever job, but I got a letter in advance of the money from HMRC and I'd presume this would work in the same way?*

If it's a tax credit underpayment, you would normally receive a revised award notice. However, payments are often made before the revised notice is sent out.

DCIRozHuntley · 03/12/2019 11:54

I've just had a letter saying I need to pay back a smallish overpayment (that I'd forgotten about since we stopped getting TC quite some time ago) so they're obviously having some sort of historical or at least from 2017ish audit.

AnAngryElf · 03/12/2019 12:00

Hope it's all for you OP! 🤞and I'm not at all jealous...

sillysmiles · 03/12/2019 12:01

Just putting anything here so I can (hopefully) see the OP get a windfall!

HollowTalk · 03/12/2019 12:04

MamaWeGotThis · 03/12/2019 12:09

Hope it wasn't a mistake 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

foreverblessedbee · 03/12/2019 12:10

How wonderful if it is genuine and yours to keep op!!!!!! I am hoping for you!

Have you got through yet? I'm impatient to know what the outcome will be🙏🙏🙏

BrickTop999 · 03/12/2019 12:10

Often refunds go into accounts before letters arrive. If they say on the telephone its legit, Id send a recorded delivery letter confirming the conversation and keep it safe in case years later you have to refer to it

donquixotedelamancha · 03/12/2019 12:14

I have a relative on the fraud team at WFTC. This sounds like a specific IT issue which is creating problems for them atm. Sorry OP, you probably won't get to keep it. As PPs have said, get in touch and make notes of all conversations you have.

PrimalLass · 03/12/2019 12:18

I would stick it in Premium Bonds and wait and see what happens.

IScreamForIceCreams · 03/12/2019 12:19

OP clearly needed a lie down after that phone call and is packing her suitcases as we speak.

mcmooberry · 03/12/2019 12:22

And??

Lillipops · 03/12/2019 12:25

Hope you get to keep it OP!
