Tax credits have just put nearly 10k in my bank

Just checked my bank, as I do most days at 12am incase payments have Gone in from my free lance job.
I don’t earn very much so I like to keep an eye.

I have just checked and nearly had a heart attack to see there was 8k in there. Last time I checked I had £113

I quickly scrolled to see where it had come from and it says bank giro - which is usually tax credits/ child benefit, but I get paid on a Friday.
And usually only £63 per week.

I have one child, have not changed circumstances all year. Haven’t contacted them for anything recently either.

WHAT DO I DO?

Fantastic news, I agree you should keep most of it in a savings account or premium bonds in case the ask for it back in the future. I love having savings, they give you peace of mind.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 06/12/2019 11:46

That’s amazing OP, congrats. Just to put us out of our misery, was the total amount £8k or £10K? Smile

TheQueef · 06/12/2019 11:47

Vegas and try red!

LaurieFairyCake · 06/12/2019 11:58

Spend it.

Frame the letter should they ever come calling.

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 06/12/2019 13:34

Oh wow!! Great news OP!

A very happy Christmas to you! Grin

Livebythecoast · 06/12/2019 13:39

Wow! I bet you can't believe it.
I'd buy premium bonds (after having a good Christmas Xmas Grin). You have to have them a full month before they go in the draw so if you got them now they'd go in February's.
I'm really pleased for you Grin

moofolk · 06/12/2019 13:41

Sounds like you were underpaid last year, if the payments were low and you were really skint.

Fingers crossed that this is them making up for that, and have a great Christmas!

EmmiJay · 06/12/2019 13:53

Such a dope Christmas surprise (or any time of year really lol) enjoy enjoy enjoy!Xmas Grin

blueheaven97 · 06/12/2019 13:58

You have it in writing that it's yours, so it's yours. SPEND SPEND SPEND :)

DearODearieMe · 06/12/2019 14:19

Amazing, did they give a reason behind it? I would be like you and paranoid! Merry Christmas Xmas Grin

gamerchick · 06/12/2019 14:22

Keep that letter as well OP. So you can easily get you hands on it if needed.

So glad it's legit for you Grin

WeePinklet · 06/12/2019 14:37

Fantastic news OP 😁👍 Thanks

You've checked and they've confirmed it's yours, so don't worry about spending it. If u spend it in reliance upon what they've said then even if they'd made a mistake (unlikely in the extreme) they wouldn't be allowed legally to pursue you for it.

Happy Christmas WineXmas Grin

spiderlight · 06/12/2019 15:36

Rockbird · 06/12/2019 16:04

drivingtofrance · 06/12/2019 16:55

Good news OP!!

PooWillyBumBum · 06/12/2019 16:59

If you really only have £250 in the bank apart from this, it’s a great way to get ahead. I would set it aside as an emergency fund!

speakout · 06/12/2019 17:10

I would set it aside as an emergency fund!

Me too- but I know many in that situation would like to spend it.

For me having a financial buffer in the bank is a very comforting feeling.
Knowing that I have the means to cope with an emergency- small things like a new washing machine or a car repair, leaking roof without worrying about the cost.
I would spend a few hundred pounds having a good christmas and stick the rest in the bank.

But that's just me!

@TheWildOnesNeverDie

🍾🥂🌷 Fabulous News! 🎉

I’m really pleased for you!!😊

Did they say how it came about?

If it was me, I would spend the smaller amounts they said immediately were definitely yours on things that you really need & have been holding off on or something that would really bring joy to you all, but I’d put the larger amount(S) in a savings account (or bonus bonds as lots have suggested- personally I thought they’d died the death years ago 🤷🏻‍♀️) only partially because I don’t trust their left hand to know what their right hand is doing - but mostly because I think having a nice chunk of money just sitting there in case of emergencies gives me far more pleasure than anything I can think of spending it on. I’m geeky like that 🤣

You’ve got yourself back on your feet without it...

Does this mean your monthly payments will go up now or was it an old mistake that they rectified?

Im stupidly pleased for you - your good news is spending cheer! 🍻
