Tax credits have just put nearly 10k in my bank

Just checked my bank, as I do most days at 12am incase payments have Gone in from my free lance job.
I don’t earn very much so I like to keep an eye.

I have just checked and nearly had a heart attack to see there was 8k in there. Last time I checked I had £113

I quickly scrolled to see where it had come from and it says bank giro - which is usually tax credits/ child benefit, but I get paid on a Friday.
And usually only £63 per week.

I have one child, have not changed circumstances all year. Haven’t contacted them for anything recently either.

WHAT DO I DO?

Fingers crossed for you op.

I'd ring your bank and see if they can shed light that confirms (or not) that the payment is actually from HMRC before you contact them. If it isn't, you really don't want some over-zealous person spending time working out that in fact you owe them money... my experience of HMRC is that I rarely get the same answer from two or more people and so I try to avoid giving them the opportunity to be creative.

TheDelorean81 · 03/12/2019 03:27

Christmas really has come early! Fingers crossed for you Smile

katmarie · 03/12/2019 03:37

I was coming on to say exactly what @pyong said, you can check your tax credits details online. I'd be looking at that first, and if it's not that, calling the bank. Have you done any ppi claims or anything like that?

JolieOBrien · 03/12/2019 03:54

I remember feeling the same when my bank refunded me my ppi it was about £7,000 yippee!

JolieOBrien · 03/12/2019 03:55

I didn't ask them for it they just did it btw it was Lloyds bank.

SucculentCandle · 03/12/2019 04:00

Fingers crossed for you OP! I really hope it's not a mistake.

NeverTwerkNaked · 03/12/2019 04:20

Yes, check with bank first then with HMRC. Really hoping it really is yours!!

Derbee · 03/12/2019 04:32

Hope it’s yours! It would be great timing!

Apolloanddaphne · 03/12/2019 05:01

If it's not a mistake then you are going to have a lovely Christmas!

Elderflower14 · 03/12/2019 05:14

Hope it's all correct!! ♥

I received 2 payments in error into my bank account - it was someones student loan (I am long past student age!). I phoned the student loan company, they said they couldn't do anything and to call my bank. I called my bank who said they couldn't do anything and to call student loan company. I asked bank to note on their system that I had contacted them and tried to sort it out. So transferred it over to my kids (instant access) savings accounts.

About 6 months later my bank called me and asked me how much it was. I said you tell me! They got figure wrong by about 300 but I returned what they asked for...

Huggybear16 · 03/12/2019 05:43

It hasn't.
Hoping this is genuinely for you OP!

Bippety · 03/12/2019 06:07

Hoping it isn't a mistake OP! I would try and get something in writing or record the time of the call and who you spoke to if they do say you can keep it.

sall74 · 03/12/2019 06:14

We had an awesome Christmas in New York with that money!

Another example of how TC/UC is going to people who would be really struggling financially without it eh?

housinghelp101 · 03/12/2019 06:19

Something similar happened to me, I was going to phone the bank in the morning but just after 8am got a phone call from Virgin Media to say someone made an admin mistake and they were going to talk me through how to transfer it back. Long story short, it was a scam, they attempted to clear out my account and they put viruses on my laptop. There was nothing suss about the whole thing, until the very last sentence when I was thanking them profusely for their help Hmm before hanging up the caller said it was very important not to talk to anyone about it or open my online banking for 24 hours. That set alarm bells ringing and I immediately phoned the bank who said it's a common scam now. Hope it's better news for you OP!

Auramigraine · 03/12/2019 06:23

Place marking! Hope it’s yours OP!

Stupiddriver1 · 03/12/2019 06:36

Yes, don’t let anyone other than your bank sort out a transfer back and I’d be very tempted to go into branch and have it sorted rather than do it over the phone.

Fairylea · 03/12/2019 06:36

We had a back payment of £2k once...!

Fingers crossed for you op.

Fightingmycorner2019 · 03/12/2019 06:37

Don’t spend ! They are notorious for making errors like this

BlanketTime · 03/12/2019 06:43

“Another example of how TC/UC is going to people who would be really struggling financially without it eh?”

What would you have done? Given it all to charity?

Savingforarainyday · 03/12/2019 06:46

Another one hoping for a Christmas miracle for you😊

Dowser · 03/12/2019 06:46

Oh no..op not got back yet

MarshallPNutt · 03/12/2019 06:47

I am very glad it worked out ok in the end housinghelp but tbh the whole thing sounds suss right from the start...
