I was amazing to see this card today in a shop! Could you imagine the uproar if this was any other social group! Shock

Yeah it's lazy and not funny.

BuildBuildings · 03/12/2019 08:31

@RockinHippy I agree on the poverty in the NE. We live in NE moved after living in London for several years. Of course not everyone is deprived. But there are huge issues with poverty and few opportunities to get out of it. In my job I work with communities and have to be aware of statistical data on deprivation. The county I work in has seen a significant rise in areas which are in the most deprived.

CanIHaveADrink · 03/12/2019 08:45

I find it insulting tbh.

Imagine replacing ‘people up North’ with black people or disabled people. Would that sound funny then?

RockinHippy · 03/12/2019 08:46

Build I do think the rich poor divide is visibly much wider, much more easily up there too. I wouldn't say my family are rolling in it, here in the south they wouldn't be able to afford the properties & lifestyles that they have now with the incomes they have, but on the surface they all have huge houses with land & plenty of spare income for holidays etc, which is a huge contrast to the poorer areas

Littlemeadow123 · 03/12/2019 08:50

I'm a Northerner abd I found it funny. But then us northerners are tough, unlike you southern softies :P

@BuildBuildings what county is that? NE concerned resident 🙋🏻‍♀️

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/12/2019 11:05

Surely the joke is on Southerners who think that Oop North is all coal in the bath and dripping butties?!

I fancy a dripping butty now!

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 03/12/2019 12:25

I hope you're not being serious.

SpiderCharlotte · 03/12/2019 12:31

Oh FFS.

You can turn just about anything offensive if you choose to.

SpiderCharlotte · 03/12/2019 12:32

Of course not, don't be ridiculous. Do you really need that to be spelt out for you? How can you even think they're comparable is ludicrous.

Butchyrestingface · 03/12/2019 12:33

I’m Scottish. I’m not offended. I just don’t find it funny.

JacquesHammer · 03/12/2019 12:36

Yawn. It’s not terribly funny for a card that’s supposed to be!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 03/12/2019 12:39

I find it funny but then you couldn’t pay me to live in the south tbh

Sagradafamiliar · 03/12/2019 12:45

It's not offensive to me personally, but eye-rollingly boring. The north/south divide banter is so tedious and repetitive listening to it.

tillytrotter1 · 03/12/2019 22:29

To be fair, if you live in Bury St Edmunds you need a laugh. If we allow the PC brigade to destroy all humour like this we're stuffed, and before anyone mounts their high horse I'm from the North, where the M6 is cobbled, but I live near Bury, not the black pudding one, the one in Suffolk.

CountFosco · 03/12/2019 23:03

I don't find it particularly funny, I'm from the far north (Inverness is doon sooth) but live in a pocket of extreme affluence in the English NE. But my experience is that it's the southerners in the family who live in poverty with their tiny flats and no cars.

Justaboy · 04/12/2019 18:37

but I live near Bury, not the black pudding one, the one in Suffolk

And what a very nice place that is too:)

BuildBuildings · 06/12/2019 08:51

@foodiefil Northumberland. Its where I work, I live in different NE County. There is a link to the report summary here:

TreeMenDos · 06/12/2019 08:54

I'm a Northerner and I laughed.

I think it's more making fun of Southern Socialites and their snobbery TBH!
