I was amazing to see this card today in a shop! Could you imagine the uproar if this was any other social group! Shock

The real problem is its like the country's too high, it needs squashing so it sticks out on the east and west sides more!..

There sorted:)

VenusTiger · 03/12/2019 00:00

I’m sure there are lots (more) of cards up north with a similar silver spoon pun about southerners.

egontoste · 03/12/2019 00:10

Oh the irony. East Anglia has some of the most deprived areas in the UK.

IWantADifferentName · 03/12/2019 00:21

The northerners clearly have a sense of humour (which the politically correct softie southerners seem to have lost).

Walkingthedog46 · 03/12/2019 00:21

Love it! Where’s it from? I’m from up t’ north as well

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/12/2019 00:31

People are missing the point - it’s actually taking the piss out of southerners, surely, suggesting they’ve led a sheltered life and never been north of the Watford Gap so have to rely on some old stereotype to fill their gaps in knowledge.

It’s in the same vein as those old 50s black and white jokey cards with the housewife and the husband wirh his pipe and slippers.

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/12/2019 00:43

I was about to post that CUrly

Surely the joke is on Southerners who think that Oop North is all coal in the bath and dripping butties?!

Try being from the Midlands, we fit in nowhere and people from both sides assume we all have a very broad Dudley accent (no, that accent you do isnt BUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRMINGHAM, its Dudley and not very good at that)

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/12/2019 00:44

Oh and Northerners think we are softy Southerners and Southerners think we are all Geordies! :o

managedmis · 03/12/2019 00:45

It's grim oop North so stay away

YouSawThePlans · 03/12/2019 00:52

I laughed but I'm from the North Scotland

OhGrrrreat · 03/12/2019 00:52

I'm from the Northwest and most people I would find it funny.

I agree joke is on the Southerners. Reminded me of a friend (Londoner). When we first met I told her I'm a northerner and she asked 'what, North London?' Well, OF COURSE, because nothing exists beyond the City of London. Major eye roll.

(Since then she has been to visit me and loves t'North!)

DaveTheDesigner · 03/12/2019 01:04

Oooooh, I’ll go to the bottom of t’stairs. I were so mithered when a saw tha’s post. Eeeeeee. Sithee! Ow dare thee! Eh?

Dogno1 · 03/12/2019 01:14

I'm from up north. I'm fancy cos we have an inside bathroom as well as the outside privy. We've still got a coal shed, and my other dog is a whippet... True story! 😁 - is the card 'offensive'? Is it fuck! There's just as many 'southerner' piss take cards in the same vein. Is there a crowdfund established for us folk who live outside the M25? 🤣

Creepster · 03/12/2019 01:26

Mocking the poor set my teeth on edge.

ferrier · 03/12/2019 01:33

I've seen whole sets of these cards targeting different groups. Exact same card - different words.

Apuddimgisneverenough · 03/12/2019 01:38

Hahaha 85% of my family are “down south” and this is exactly the card they would buy for me
It is hilarious

ActualFemale · 03/12/2019 02:06

I’m from the north east! Not even sure what you mean about deprivation... I assume you’re talking about Middlesbrough but the rest is about standard!

I'm County Durham and it's not just Middlesbrough. It's kind of fresh in my mind because I remember reading this a while back and putting my postcode in and not being shocked at how far on the "most deprived" my area was. (I'm the app so can't do links)

www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/most-deprived-neighbourhoods-north-east-17027551

I don't feel strongly about the card either way, I don't find it offensive nor funny. I do know people who wouldn't find it funny and likely to be offended by it depending on the person giving it.

Too damn right very rare anyone gets the Birmingham accent right.

Back on track I would buy that card.. I love that range anyway...

Topseyt · 03/12/2019 02:36

I like it. Don't see the problem.

Yarboosucks · 03/12/2019 02:55

I am a southerner, married to a Yorkshire man. Cards like this are a staple of our relationship.

MrsFezziwig · 03/12/2019 03:24

Have you been north and south? As a foreigner it’s like being in two different countries. It looks different, people behave differently, they speak differently etc. Of course the north south divide is still a thing, culturally at least the divide is very visible.

So every part of the north (or south) is exactly the same as any other part? So Cornwall is exactly the same as Croydon, and the Yorkshire Dales is exactly the same as Liverpool? What a load of nonsense.

transformandriseup · 03/12/2019 07:33

In Cornwall we make similar jokes about places which are further north than us - which is anywhere in Britain. Plymouth usually takes a beating. Of course we act all offended when it's thrown back at us.

PineappleDanish · 03/12/2019 07:40

It's as much a poke at the southerners who churn out stereotypes about "the north" all being this one mass of people who say things like "eeee by gum", wear flat caps and have whippets.

It's not offensive.

RockinHippy · 03/12/2019 08:10

A North Easterner here & I'm torn in this one.

In general it doesn't offend me, but it would depend who sent it to me. We now live far south & we have friends who have never been further than Watford & genuinely believe all northerners are lower working class/under class scum & the whole of the North is grey, factory & smog ridden. From one of them it would seriously piss me off

RockinHippy · 03/12/2019 08:20

I disagree with this too. Even the once picturesque farming village I grew up in is a no go area if you look like you might have a fiver in your purse, I didn't believe it when my cousins warned me about going for a walk there, but driving through it was awful, so sad 😞

I also have family up there that are big church goers & do a lot for the local community with fund raising, food banks etc. The poverty is very real
