I was amazing to see this card today in a shop! Could you imagine the uproar if this was any other social group! Shock

To think that this is really outdated?

I love this and I’m from the North too. And my Southern other half would also love it, in fact if he’d seen it first it would no doubt be the card I got for Christmas Grin

foodiefil · 02/12/2019 22:16

I live in the north east and don't like it. And yes I have a very good sense of humour thanks very much. It's lazy humour. As @JasonPollack said the north south divide is real.

foodiefil · 02/12/2019 22:17

You have no clue @TheDarkPassenger there is deprivation in every single pocket of the north east. Throughout County Durham Sunderland Northumberland Newcastle north and south Tyneside Gateshead and yes Middlesbrough Stockton etc.

foodiefil · 02/12/2019 22:24

The most deprived being Walker if you know it @TheDarkPassenger

justasking111 · 02/12/2019 22:29

Meanwhile in Wales we get the sheep shagging jokes. Grin

MontanaSkies · 02/12/2019 22:32

Isn't this making fun of the sort of people who would think that?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/12/2019 22:32

I'm from "Up North" and PMSL when I read it!

Daffodil55 · 02/12/2019 22:35

Ah the northerners thing. Flat caps and ferrets. Not forgetting that wonderful Victoria Wood sketch where the fake newsreader announced that all chip pan fires are in the North.

Do people in the North all have electricity and inside toilets these days then?

To think that this is really outdated?
Thurmanmurman · 02/12/2019 22:36

I’m a Northerner and think it’s funny. We don’t get easily offended like you Southern softies 😉

PaquitaVariation · 02/12/2019 22:37

I’m from the north east! Not even sure what you mean about deprivation... I assume you’re talking about Middlesbrough but the rest is about standard!

I’m from Middlesbrough and know about the deprivation. Very similar levels to many other places in the NE, the Durham coast where I work is especially bad and definitely comparable to Boro. Huge amount of rural deprivation across the county too.

That said, I do think the card is funny.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 02/12/2019 22:42

I read it as taking the piss out of Southerners for their outdated views

NoSquirrels · 02/12/2019 22:45

It's poking fun at southerners for being twats, though.

So are you upset that southerners are being made fun of?

Daffodil55 · 02/12/2019 22:48

All working class Londoners eat nothing but jellied eels and pie and mash and their main entertainment is dressing as pearly kings and queens and have a right old knees up down the pab of a Friday night.

Don't get me started on the Scotch (yes I know it is Scots but southerners all think it is Scotch, not to be confused with the whiskey drink to be enjoyed in daan the boozer)

I like those jokey cards which are just that, JOKES

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 02/12/2019 23:00

Soon we won't be able to laugh at anything will we? Because for all jokes/humour there is someone to whom it will hit slightly close to home. Depressing.

Whattheother2catsprefer · 02/12/2019 23:02

@Daffodil55 Victoria Woods posh southern news reader also did "We'd like to apologise to viewers in the North

It must be awful for them"

PopGoesTheWeaz · 02/12/2019 23:21

Bury St Edmunds is Up North!
It's the other side of the M4.

best reply!

Hopingtobeamum · 02/12/2019 23:28

People 'up north' probably don't care in the main. I'm live up north (North Yorkshire) and would probably buy something like this 😂😂

notangelinajolie · 02/12/2019 23:29

It's a joke. I'm from up north and not in the least bit offended. If this is outdated humour then I say - bring it back. Everything is so bloody pc these days.

PicsInRed · 02/12/2019 23:34

As with any joke which involves potential kicking down, it would depend who wrote it.

Bahhhhhumbug · 02/12/2019 23:36

Northener here with family down south as ds married a southerner. We take the mickey out of each other continually. I recently posted the severe weather warning joke on fb which tells people in the south to stay indoors no matter what and then says 'Northerners, you ll need your big coat'

Velveteenfruitbowl · 02/12/2019 23:39

Have you been north and south? As a foreigner it’s like being in two different countries. It looks different, people behave differently, they speak differently etc. Of course the north south divide is still a thing, culturally at least the divide is very visible.

incognitomum · 02/12/2019 23:40

@PaquitaVariation I live on the Durham coast.

It's fairly funny to me but I know people from up north who wouldn't find it funny.

melj1213 · 02/12/2019 23:41

I'm from up north (Lake District) and while I think it's lazy humour - relying on the "poor northerners vs rich southerners" trope - don't find it offensive and I live in a town that has one of the most deprived areas in the country.

Hopingtobeamum · 02/12/2019 23:44

TBH we've got enough shit going on in the UK right now without getting our knickers in a twist about north/south divide politics.
I agree with the lady that said we're way too 'pc' nowadays

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 02/12/2019 23:47

It's a joke, based on those competitively miserable Northern childhood stories (We lived in a box. You had a box! Lucky sods. We slept in the mud. You had mud! You didn't know you were born)

It's not offensive, and I'm from even further north than The North.
