Listening to statistician on BBC who reckons the conservatives are head in all polls and will win a majority on election day.

I know only two people voting conservative (mil and dm). Who are all the other conservative voters??

Are the conservatives really going to win the election so easily?

If so...I'm very very sad Sad Wine

"Looking like letter boxes" of women in traditional Islamic dress

LakieLady, first this type of dress is NOT traditional Islamic dress. Second, although this is a clumsily made description (to put it lightly!), this statement was made in a article defending the right of said women to dress in this manner.

Disclaimer - I am not a Boris fan or a Tory voter, but attacks need to be factually accurate and in the correct context.

ArseDarkly · 03/12/2019 14:00

What has Jeremy Corbyn actually done? He did vote against the Iraq War which I applaud him for. But what has he actually achieved?

Probably a lot of small victories, in collaboration with others, which wouldn't grab any headlines but mean a hell of a lot to those affected. He's the leader of his party and attracted a huge amount of new members with his clear pleas for a more compassionate and balanced society. Considering the state the party had got into at the fag-end of 'new labour' that was a big achievement.

2boysDad · 03/12/2019 14:02

This is rather depressing for me but....

I've just read the Conservative Manifesto and the Labour Manifesto and if forced at gunpoint, I would vote conservative.

Fortunately I live in a Lib-Dem/Tory marginal so I don't have to make that choice.

Something that I never thought I would say.....

JacobReesClunge · 03/12/2019 14:03

Your username does rather give the game away to anyone with a modicum of critical thought!

It really doesn't. Do you think only Labour supporters despise Rees Mogg? Because if so, try having a chat about him with supporters of the Greens, Lib Dems, SNP, Plaid Cymru, the SDLP, Alliance Party, UUP, Sinn Fein or frankly even quite a few people who won't be voting for anyone.

Sickofrain · 03/12/2019 14:04

Anyone
But
Corbyn

He'd bankrupt the country in 6 months and then the poorest will suffer the most.

I wanted to vote Lib Dem. I'll be voting for a rubbish Conservative MP to keep Corbyn out and protect the country (a bit).

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 03/12/2019 14:05

I'm going to be voting Conservative and I'm not ashamed. Anyone who thinks I should be can bugger off.

I'll be worse off under Corbyn, his pie in the sky "freebies and giveaways" will be paid for by whom? And don't get me started on his Corporation tax stance. I own my own business which is doing well, by fucking hard work, and the money I earn is my children's legacy. I'm working for them, but also paying big tax bills too, and Corbyn wants me to pay a whole lot more.
Am I being selfish? Probably.

But I'll never vote for shifty Corbyn. I can remember John Smith being the Labour leader. Such a pity Corbyn couldn't be more like him, I think he'd have much more support if he was.

CendrillonSings · 03/12/2019 14:07

We live in a two-party system as far as the next government is concerned. If you’re against Boris and the Tories, then that means you want Labour to take power and install Corbyn as PM. Those are the only realistic outcomes to the election, regardless of all that waffle.

Alsohuman · 03/12/2019 14:18

Corbyn wants me to pay a whole lot more

Corporation tax at rates lower than under the last Tory government. Yes, Labour’s so left wing and so bad for the economy, yet corporation tax was 40% under Thatcher.

JacobReesClunge · 03/12/2019 14:21

This claim is idiotic. There are constituencies in the UK where neither party is even standing. Although anything to try and swerve the Tory anti-Semitism discussion, I suppose.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 03/12/2019 14:38

I won't be voting Conservative because I hate Brexit and Boris Johnson.

HOWEVER - their policies on corporation tax are great for small businesses and encourage self-employment and entrepreneurs.

I also fundamentally disagree with Labour's taxation plans (and I am a very low earner).

So I am kind of stuck. I am going to vote Green even though I think it's a wasted vote.

DippyAvocado · 03/12/2019 14:46

I've just read the Conservative Manifesto and the Labour Manifesto and if forced at gunpoint, I would vote conservative.
The Conservatives haven't put anything in their manifesto.

I heard an item on Radio 4 at lunchtime about people being made homeless due to the lack of social housing and the refusal of private landlords to rent to people on UC because it is always paid in arrears. A woman lost her home and children because she fell behind on her rent after problems with universal credit. I cannot understand why people would vote for a party that does this to the poor and vulnerable. This sort of thing would have been unthinkable even to former Conservative governments.

WorldEndingFire · 03/12/2019 14:57

It's really quite astonishing to read those who will have to pay a little more (above the £80K threshold) getting so upset. Paying the equivalent of a Netflix subscription each month for a properly functioning NHS and wider public services is an excellent investment in ourselves, our loved ones and our country.

ACautionaryTale · 03/12/2019 14:58

"Children are starving under austerity. It boggles my mind that people are willing to overlook this and vote in a government with this track record. If you earn over £80k and resent the extra tenner a month in tax to help prevent this, you really need to have a word with yourself."

Its NOT the tenner a week.... I read and made notes on the manifesto..... As I said on another post, if I was EVER going to vote labour I sure as hell would not do so now.

___

Entrprenaurs relief scrapped and all capital gains to be be taxed at marginal rate (currently 20% after the allowance) - no incentive for small businesses to try to grow

Dividends to be taxed at marginal rate (which means after they've been taxed at 26% corporation tax they then get taxed again for the recipient meaning they actually get taxed at 66% or worse)

Corporation tax rising from 19% to 21% and 26% if turnover (note not profit) is over £300,000 - you could make a profit of £1000 and still pay 26% tax

Income tax rising to 50% if you happen to earn over £80K - which is onlu slightly above the MP's salary so they are ok

Married persons allowance scrapped - so a £250 tax rise for the poorest since to qualify you have to be a basic rate tax payer and the spouse has to be earning less than the personal allowance

200% second home tax even if accidentally inheriting or having to move and trying to sell

10% of uk based companies share capital to be "owned" by the government who wil then pay some back to the workers - let watch all international companies remove their head quarters from the UK the day after election

Full employment rights from day one - so no chance to get rid early of people who don't perform - which is going to put companies off actually hiring people in the first place or just using temps.

Collective bargaining to be introduced across all sectors - removes the incentive to work harder for better pay or better negotiation

Maternity leave to be increased and flexible working to become a right - thats women having less chance of decent employment then as I for one would not hire one

Government policy to eradicate gender pay gap - the reason for it is because women IN GENERAL tend not to do the higher paid jobs because they don't like the hours, stress, committment or travel and are more family orientated. Women get paid the same for doing the same jobs.

Keeping sunday restrictions on trading - so we're still stuck in the 19th century

Ending two child cap - so basically reverting to paying people to have children whether they can afford it or not

Finding the magic money tree for WASPI women who if they read the news should have known about the pension changes - not anyone's fault if they didnt educate themselves

REnt controls and open ended contracts for renters - so how do you manage to evict the problem tenant? Pushes the balance too far into the hands of the renter and will actually reduce the supply of reasonably affordable rentals.

A Labour government will repeal the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011, which has stifled democracy and propped up weak governments. - this is hyocritical when they relied on it to STOP a general election for several months

Brexit - another year of uncertainty before we even start on trade deals.

ChristmasAngst · 03/12/2019 14:58

So if Boris gets back in, with a bigger majority, what exactly does that mean? Doesn't it mean that people have again voted for Brexit? Anyone who is remain is not going to vote for him after all.

If he gets in again are people finally going to accept that the majority want Brexit and the vote is final? Or are they going to go into denial again and say that it wasn't a Brexit vote and people have voted on all issues and we still need a referendum?

How are retainers going to feel if the majority vote in the Conservatives overwhelmingly and that shows that more people want Brexit than we thought?

WorldEndingFire · 03/12/2019 14:58

I would also strongly encourage anyone staunchly advocating a blue vote to watch this and to consider whether this is the world they wish for: www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches

WorldEndingFire · 03/12/2019 15:02

It really irks when people don't cite their sources.

curlykaren · 03/12/2019 15:05

Given that the conservatives have been celebrating a known antisemite, as recently as a few days ago, I can't really understand how anyone can make it the single issue upon whuch they vote.

PBo83 · 03/12/2019 15:06

@ACautionaryTale

Thankyou. Saved me a fair bit of typing there, very good reasons to vote Tory.

Snowy111 · 03/12/2019 15:06

If BJ gets in with a bigger majority then we’ll end up with his bad deal or no deal Brexit, and years of difficulty and recovery. It’ll probably all be over for hopeful remainers, but at the points when there is a no deal threat I expect there’ll be protests.

LemonPrism · 03/12/2019 15:09

I just can't vote for Boris. He's a racist, sexist, deviant elitist.

LemonPrism · 03/12/2019 15:09

His middle name should be arrogance

ChristmasAngst · 03/12/2019 15:14

I haven't actually decided who I am going to vote for yet. I am actually thinking of spoiling my vote as my MP isn't going anywhere. It is one of the safest seats in the country.

I want to make a few predictions though ,

Boris will get in again and have a reasonable majority. I just think there are too many people who are going to vote for him and hold their noses.

Labour will get trounced.

Lib Dems will not get the results they expect as Remainers prefer another referendum than the divisive stance of cancelling Brexit.

SNP will lose seats and Nicola Sturgeon will have a face like a slapped arse.

Nigel Farage will come out the day before the vote and say back Boris not the Brexit party as it is more important for him to leave Europe than win seats.

This is my prediction.

ajandjjmum · 03/12/2019 15:14

ACautionaryTale
Thank you - that is really interesting, and potentially very worrying.

ACautionaryTale · 03/12/2019 15:14

Also - Free Broadband

The likeliest implementation fo that is:

Government provided free broadband up to a relatively low cap as that is all you need to take part in society if you want to look at it that way.

If you want high data limits or unlimited - you will pay through the nose for it - several magnitudes more than now, But thats ok, because you must be able to afford it.

The broadband will also be government controlled so they can block what ever they want to

NO THANK YOU

ACautionaryTale · 03/12/2019 15:16

@PBo83
@ajandjjmum

I have it stored on a note on my computer. I did it in response to people who kept asking me "Have I even read the Labour Manifesto"

So I did. It backfired on them - not that I would ever have voted labour in the first place.

But now I have that summary as ammunition.
