How anyone can vote Tory?

Stella8686 · 28/11/2019 23:40

After seeing some pro labour and pro conservatives posts recently I am genuinely interested to see what makes someone vote conservative

OTHER THAN

  1. Hard/ quick Brexit
  2. Looking after your own finances
  3. Hatred for Labour/ Corbyn

ABIU to not be able to think of any single other reason to vote conservative?

New labour was pretty conservative....they got less so as time went on....

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 03/12/2019 15:22

That just looks like rapid backpedaling. I also note you have failed to consider the impact of the financial crisis on poverty levels and attributed any rise solely to austerity. I think a worldwide financial shock on the scale of 2008 onwards would have affected poverty levels no matter who was in power.

Kittygirl47 · 03/12/2019 15:45

I’m voting conservative because of the benefit cap. People breeding just because they can and often on here whining about benefits just makes me want to even more.

I’m not even moved by “child poverty” or “nurse has to use foodbanks” nonsense. Manage your finances properly (ie don’t have kids you can’t afford) and most nurses I’ve come across are lazy arses who just chat about their station. They aren’t poorly paid either, just can’t manage finances.

Trewser · 03/12/2019 16:02

Wow kitty, why not say what you really think Shock

Kittygirl47 · 03/12/2019 16:29

Will do @trewser. Ta.

Spinderellacutituponetime · 03/12/2019 16:29

@Kittygirl47 your compassion and understanding is quite spectacular.

curlykaren · 03/12/2019 16:34

Wow. People are so shit.

Spinderellacutituponetime · 03/12/2019 16:36

I know right. Really depressing. Wonder why people have a horrible perception of those that vote Tory?

herecomesthebacon · 03/12/2019 16:37

I wonder if people who say "don't have children you can't afford" understand that circumstances can change.

When my mum had my sister and I she was in a stable marriage with a well off husband, a house and savings.

Then my father lost his job due to his increasing alcoholism, then left her and us for another woman, taking all his money with him. We lost the house. We lost everything. Moved into council accommodation.

There are only a few payslips between most of us and poverty. DH and I earn 125k between us but I absolutely know that can change in a heartbeat.

Alsohuman · 03/12/2019 16:37

Jesus fucking Christ. There are some nasty pieces of work on here.

merrymouse · 03/12/2019 16:43

"don’t have kids you can’t afford"

So what happens to the children who are born anyway? We just pretend they aren't there? Blaming or penalising the parents doesn't make the children disappear in a puff of smoke.

How high do you think crime rates are in countries where a large proportion of the population can't support themselves legally? Do you think these countries are pleasant places to live?

You have limited control over how other people behave, but it is in your own interests to ensure that children are properly educated, fed and sheltered.

SillyUnMurphy · 03/12/2019 16:45

Easily, thanks. Isn’t democracy fantastic?!

Kittygirl47 · 03/12/2019 16:46

@Kittygirl47 your compassion and understanding is quite spectacular

And I assume yours is @Spinderellacutituponetime ? If you’re a mother did you consider non mothers tax contributions to bringing up your choice?

Trewser · 03/12/2019 16:50

Wonder why people have a horrible perception of those that vote Tory?

Well, a friend of my dsis told me that he hoped I'd get cancer when he found out i didn't vote Labour, so it goes both ways tbf.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 03/12/2019 17:04

@trewser

That’s horrible! I also find a lot more nastiness emanating from the left.

Anyway, I agree with pps who said these types are threads are just activist spam. Enough.

Alsohuman · 03/12/2019 17:06

@Trewser, that’s appalling. So sorry.

leckford · 03/12/2019 17:13

Four million children in poverty, the most I have seen quoted in 120,000 you are Diane Abbott and I claim my £5!

Alsohuman · 03/12/2019 17:16

There you go @leckford. It took me five seconds. There’s a UN report kicking about too.

Alsohuman · 03/12/2019 18:02

The UN report.

Trewser · 03/12/2019 18:06

Ah don't worry, he was a nutter tbf.

Spinderellacutituponetime · 03/12/2019 18:09

@Kittygirl47 whether I’m a mother or not is none of your business but I hope you are not bringing up children with those kinds of attitudes. Horrible.

DdraigGoch · 03/12/2019 23:39

How does the UN report define "poverty"? How do other comparable countries fare?

ReadtheSmallPrint · 04/12/2019 09:02

How do other comparable countries fare?

The UK is about average for Europe.

fullfact.org/economy/uks-poverty-rate-around-average-eu/

ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/People_at_risk_of_poverty_or_social_exclusion

Alsohuman · 04/12/2019 10:04

From your first link @Readthesmallprint

The Spectator Index
@spectatorindex
Poverty rate, 2018.

Romania: 25.3%
UK: 23.2%
Spain: 22.3%
Greece: 21.2%
Italy: 20.6%
Portugal: 19.0%
Poland: 17.3%
Ireland: 16.6%
Germany: 16.5%
Sweden: 16.2%
Belgium: 15.5%
France: 13.6%
Norway: 12.3%
Denmark: 11.9%
Finland: 11.7%

(Eurostat)

Second highest poverty rate in Europe, exceeded only by Romania.

Trewser · 04/12/2019 10:05

yes its much higher than I thought.

It seems nitpicking to point it out, but poverty doesn't mean destitution.

I conflated the two in my head.

Before anyone jumps on me, no, this doesn't make it better, it was just interesting that there are degrees.
