To think its ridiculous that Johnson sent his Dad ...

Johnson sent his Dad and Gove to the channel4 leaders' debate on climate change instead of going himself. Channel 4 empty chaired him with an ice sculpture.

Is he worried he would show how incompetent he is? God help us trying to influence other nations if he is elected with an outright majority.

The point of doing interviews/debates is to influence the election result. Boris is on target to win the election. He has nothing to gain and a lot to lose by letting himself be grilled. It is sound strategy to duck interviews/debates as much as he can without the ducking in itself becoming damaging.

The other party leaders subject themselves to these things because they're more desperate, not because they're more virtuous.

longwayoff · 29/11/2019 09:08

He's on LBC now with tabloid journo Nick Ferrari. Who can be forensic but is a Tory.

slartibarti · 29/11/2019 09:11

...Now we're supposed to accept that the PM is so important that he might deign to turn up and grace everyone with his presence so we can find out more about what kind of man we're electing,...

As we'll be voting for a party not a person we need to know about climate change policies. No need for the leaders to attend. It would have made a more useful debate for each party to send their most knowledgable person.

The other party leaders subject themselves to these things because they understand democracy and know they’re accountable to the electorate. Fixed that for you.

MarshaBradyo · 29/11/2019 09:17

He doesn’t have a do I have to do this line if thinking just I’ll do whatever I want. Once you have that mindset you can do and say anything that will help you win. In the end it’ll probably work. Especially if they get a majority.

MarmotMorning · 29/11/2019 09:30

Not entering the debate and sending Gove and his dad is straight out of the Tory and Trump playbook.

It's a Dead Cat strategy where you do something a little random and strange so everyone talks about that therefore ignoring the real issues.

And I've a sneaky suspicion these kind of antics play well to his base voters.

Windygate · 29/11/2019 09:54

I doubt very much that Boris tells Stanley to do anything. Stanley Johnson seems perfectly capable of making his own decisions good or bad.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 29/11/2019 09:57

Surely it makes more sense to here from the environment minister on an environment debate? Obviously it should have been check before hand but quite frankly I would be more interested from hearing from the relevant ministers than from the party leaders. His reaction was very OTT though.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 29/11/2019 10:05

Climate change is a leadership issue, it's not something that should be delegated down.

On a positive note, it was refreshing to see all the parties (that turned up) have a civilised discussion. That's what true leaders do, speak honestly and respectfully to each other.

longwayoff · 29/11/2019 10:21

They didn't send the Environment Minister, they sent Michael Gove and BJs dad. And possibly a Note From His Mum as well

MarshaBradyo · 29/11/2019 10:27

Agree on the point re a true leader. Unfortunately a few have worked out to win it’s beneficial to do it in more underhand ways.

Roussette · 29/11/2019 10:28

Bloody hell. BBC 2 now Victoria Derbyshire show with BoJo's dad. Why in god's name is he being interviewed I don't know. What will we have next ... Gove's sister or Cleverly's half brother??

Rude rude man. This will come back to bite BoJo on the bottom. Stan has just insulted the great british public like you wouldn't believe. He basically said that none of us are literary and couldn't spell if we tried.

theflushedzebra · 29/11/2019 10:37

I remember seeing BoJo's dad on The Last Leg some time ago, and thought "ah, so that's where Boris gets it from". Chip off the old block.

curlykaren · 29/11/2019 10:42

Daddy on Victoria live and Bojo on Nick Ferrari were both utterly awful. Ferrari gave him a hard time, he clearly wasn't expecting it and struggled with answers.

beguilingeyes · 29/11/2019 10:50

Boris is going to hide away until the election. He can't take any kind of scrutiny. He was lost for words yesterday when those nurses asked him about his 'magic nurses tree'.

Lizzie0869 · 29/11/2019 10:56

Sadly I'm not in the least surprised. The most depressing part of this is that the Tories will still win, and probably with an overall majority. Because no one apart from the hard left is going to vote for Corbyn. And BJ knows that, that's why he can treat the electorate with such contempt.

longwayoff · 29/11/2019 11:03

Someone, please, start the 'I can't take any more of this' party. It's unbearable.

If
@StanleyPJohnson
didn't know what 'going viral' meant before today, he will know after this.

"that requires a certain degree of literacy which I think the Great British public doesn't necessarily have.... they couldn't spell Pinocchio if they tried."

StarbucksSmarterSister · 29/11/2019 11:25

He basically said that none of us are literary and couldn't spell if we tried.

Showing that, like his son and most of the Tory cabinet, he holds the rest of us in contempt.

Have people seen either of these yet?

MarshaBradyo · 29/11/2019 11:27

Yes contempt for sure, people will still vote for them - I agree about too far left comment of Labour by pp

Dusty01 · 29/11/2019 11:28

The bottom link is the one where BJ"s dad says that none of us can spell.

MarshaBradyo · 29/11/2019 11:29

Interesting he chose Pinocchio as the word we couldn’t spell. Maybe that’s why BJ keeps polling well

Dusty01 · 29/11/2019 11:30

And he actually believes it ... huge superiority complex. How an earth can anyone think this way? It's not as if BJ and his dad are brainboxes.

Dusty01 · 29/11/2019 11:30

It was because they were talking about people posting Pinocchio emojis next to Boris.
