To think that it's impossible to vote for Jeremy Corbyn after last night's interview?

To be upfront : I would never vote for Labour or Corbyn anyway, for various reasons.. But that was not a good interview and had I been considering it I would be very concerned now.

You dont hear the one dissenting voice of the friend you just said has one in the previous sentence?

People do believe things they read in the papers when they are repeated often enough. Eg corbyn is far left. Every time labour is talked about the far left the far left the far left. Nationalised rail, council houses, higher taxes, not having nuclear weapons are normal in most European countries that are not considered left wing, today, we are the outlier. Yet people still parrot it everywhere. The media have done a very good job of moving the Overton window to the right in this country so that May with her hostile environment is called centrist and raising taxes in line with other countries described as dangerously left wing.

Never heard of this Rabbi or this organization before.

A little research shows he represents the 'Satmar' ultraorthodox sect who believe the establishment of Israel is a travesty against god. They also believe things like university education for women is dangerous.

Even for the Haredi or ultraorthodox community they're pretty extreme.

Again, I hardly think this small group is represenative of anyone but themselves. Certainly not the wider Jewish or even Haredi community. The Chief Rabbi doesn't represent me but at least he is a mainstream figure in the Jewish community.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 29/11/2019 09:10

Oh, so EDMs are evidence of how Corbyn really feels about things are they? Do you know he wants us all blown to smithereens by an asteroid? edm.parliament.uk/early-day-motion/24837#collapse-amendments That one's never brought up by his supporters as evidence of his true feelings. Anyway, Corbyn has signed nearly 20,000 EDMs. So of we look at the 23 listed above that's 0.1% of his EDMs. The claimed 0.1% of Labour members being anti-Semitic means it's non-existent doesn't it? Same with the EDMs.

As for JVL and the Canary - JVL was formed to pretend there's no racism and the Canary is just total bollocks. I'm surprised no one's mentioned that JC's mum was at Cable Street, but then so was Piers Corbyn's and look at him.

'It’s not the Chief Rabbi’s place to intervene in politics- and it’s simple scaremongering'

“Convention dictates that the Chief Rabbi stays well away from party politics”. These are the words of the Chief Rabbi himself, and there will be many who think that Ephraim Mirvis should have left it there. “It is not my place to tell any person how they should vote,” he also says in a piece he wrote for the Times newspaper, so it’s safe to say that the spiritual leader of Britain’s Jews understands that his treatise on anti-Semitism in the Labour Party - on the very day Labour launches its faith and race pledges - is unprecedented, unconstitutional and potentially decisive.'

"I am a Jewish Labour member, and the Chief Rabbi's claims about anti-Semitism are based on a view of the party I don't recognise"

AhNowTed · 29/11/2019 09:37

Just had a quick look at the Jewish Chronicle's FB page.

Out of the first 25 posts, I counted no fewer than 17 anti-Labour.

There's more but I stopped counting.

AnnieTotach · 29/11/2019 09:54

So the JC is anti-labour. Not exactly a big surprise given that the Labour party is anti-semitic. What do you want? That we don't fight back? That didn't work out so well for us in the past.

'A list of fifty occasions on which Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn stood with Jewish people in the UK and other countries has been published by his supporters.

A list of fifty occasions but only four examples from the last four years - at a time when he is under the most scrutiny;

18 Nov. 2015, Corbyn used one of his first PMQs to challenge Cameron to do more on antisemitism
9 Oct 2016: Corbyn, close to tears, leads commemoration of the Battle of Cable Street
3 Dec. 2016: Corbyn visits Terezin Concentration Camp to commemorate Holocaust victims
In 2017-19 Jeremy introduced 20 new measures to combat antisemitism in the Labour Party

JC's supporters would have done better had they listed the '20 new measures' in 2017-2019 - what are they?

AhNowTed · 29/11/2019 11:49

You’ve quoted a number of times that “87%” of Jews think Labour is antisemitic. Since the Jewish Chronicle is the main publication of the Jewish community and is staunchly anti-Labour, that’s hardly surprising.

Yes I’m well aware that Jews like anyone else are capable of critical thought.

But at the risk of insulting your intelligence, people are influenced by the media they read.

90schic · 29/11/2019 11:51

One word.... BORIS.

AhNowTed · 29/11/2019 11:53

One word.... LIAR.

noblegiraffe · 29/11/2019 13:31

@colourmagic

So the people who sent the letter that looks dodgy insist it’s legit by claiming it’s legit and not by explaining why their ‘massive’ organisation gave the address of a bakery, their phone number doesn’t work and their website was chucked together in May?

I think independent verification and explanation is needed, don’t you?

FindingCassiopeia · 29/11/2019 14:39

So you do accept that Corbyn stood up for the Jewish community at least 50 times throughout his career.

Are you able to list 50 occasions when Boris did the same?

AnnieTotach · 29/11/2019 14:59

"But at the risk of insulting your intelligence, people are influenced by the media they read."

Indeed. As much as you are. Maybe your perception of Corbyn is influenced by the media which YOU read.

It's so much like Trump - just blame the media! It's all fake news apparently!

AnnieTotach · 29/11/2019 15:00

"So you do accept that Corbyn stood up for the Jewish community at least 50 times throughout his career."

Crying at Cable Street isn't 'standing up for Jewish community'. Any way, may be he needed too in order to balance the many times he's knocked them down.

Krisskrosskiss · 29/11/2019 15:09

Better than Boris who wont even dare go on! At least Corbyn has integrity. Let's be honest it's going to be a labour government or a tory government... so I know how I'll be voting. That's the choice we have. Corbyn may not be great but hes a hundred times better than that egomaniac career driven Johnson. At least I get the sense from Corbyn that he genuinely gives a shit about people. I honestly dont think Boris cares if I or anyone I know, lives or dies as long as he makes some money out if it.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 29/11/2019 15:11

Annie, you consistently disregard anything that does not sit with your view of Corbyn. I was speaking with a Jewish man on Tuesday, for the sake of transparency he and I are both Labour Party members. He is sick of the reporting of anti semitism in the Party, and feels the issue has been overblown and does not reflect reality. Are you going to disregard his voice?

(My view is that it exists but is not nearly to the extreme that it is reported in the press.)

AhNowTed · 29/11/2019 15:50

"Maybe your perception of Corbyn is influenced by the media which YOU read."

Yeah sure, because the left wing media is so powerful 🙄

Never mind, the JC has managed to trot out even more anti-Labour stories since this morning.

nicky7654 · 29/11/2019 15:58

Blimey I would never ever vote for Corbyn. Not overly happy with the Conservatives over the last 3 years but to vote for a Traitor - No way!!?

Devereux1 · 29/11/2019 16:24

@AhNowTed
...Since the Jewish Chronicle is the main publication of the Jewish community and is staunchly anti-Labour, that’s hardly surprising.
But at the risk of insulting your intelligence, people are influenced by the media they read.

Why, what proportion of the 87% of total Jews who believe the Labour Party is antisemitic, read the Jewish Chronicle do you think?

AhNowTed · 29/11/2019 16:35

@Devereux1
I've no idea. I was quoting AnnieTotach when she said "the Jewish Chronicle is the main publication of the Jewish community"

She appears to be be Jewish.

Devereux1 · 29/11/2019 16:41

@AhNowTed

I've no idea.

Oh. Your post seemed to suggest that the Jews who thought Labour was anti-semitic were doing so because they were influenced by the media they read.

Obviously, if they don't read the JC, they're not being influenced by it.

If you don't know how many Jews read the JC, then you don't know the influence of the JC on British Jews.

So, other than via an unquantifiable effect of the JC on these Jews, why else do you think 87% of Jews might have formed the view that the Labour Party is anti-semitic?

wafflyversatile · 29/11/2019 17:05

The Jewish Chronicle is hardly the only media that constantly paints Jeremy Corbyn as anti-semitic.

wafflyversatile · 29/11/2019 17:08

Not overly happy with the Conservatives over the last 3 years but to vote for a Traitor - No way!!?

Which aspects of the last 3 years are you not overly happy with? What were you happy about in the preceding years? Can you explain what you mean by 'a Traitor'?

AnnieTotach · 29/11/2019 18:34

Ha ha, until corbyn came along the jc mostly dealt with school visits to old age homes. It's quite unprecedented that it has reacted in this way. And it IS a reaction to Corbyn and his impact on the Jewish community, not a cause of it. Its reflecting the concerns and fears of many.

Btw haven't read the JC in years other than the headline on Corbyn. It might be the main publication of the Jewish community but most would buy it to find out who had died or got married rather than because of its journalistic prowess. What has happened is simply unprecedented.

AnnieTotach · 29/11/2019 18:37

"Jewish Chronicle is hardly the only media that constantly paints Jeremy Corbyn as anti-semitic."

Indeed. Funny that one, eh?
