Before I get my ass handed to me.....

Disclaimer: I believe strongly in food banks, my job relies on their excellent work, I donate occasionally and recognise that all people from all walks of life can get caught out with unexpected bills/Enough money to make ends meet.

It may be affecting my judgement as I work with homeless people who have absolutely nothing.

I have an acquaintance who is well know for being beyond tight. Eg. Down the curry house will order & pay for £4 veg dish only, eat everyone else’s food and refuse to split costs. She has been challenged on this.

She claims constant poverty (which we all used to give sympathy to), all whilst seemingly going on a weekend away every couple of months, eating out weekly, a luxury holiday this year, home renovations, concerts and recently drinks and Christmas shopping in a big city. (FB tags)

However, she has stated that she has a system to work the food bank. In this area you can claim 3 times a year. So she has stated that she is rotating between different children’s centres and the school to keep getting food vouchers.

I have distanced myself and am trying to ignore but.....

Am I being unreasonable to be irked about her using the food bank in this manner?

All I can say is Im glad I don't need a food bank and that even scamming three food banks wouldn't bring much riches.

I will still donate and accept that there are always some scammers. But EVEN they are not ' well off' because if you were you just wouldn't bother.

Why can't you discuss this with your colleagues ?
This post has done more harm than good

I think there very existence shames us as a society.

I disagree. In any society there will be people who fall through the net, despite the efforts to help. A food bank is a short term measure for people who find themselves short of food in an emergency. The benefits system can’t always help quickly.

Many people want to help but are unwilling to give cash to charities or pay more tax because they don’t like that only 20p in their £1 is going to those who need it. Donating to a food bank is a direct way of helping. I think the fact food banks are able to help shows that as a society, we want to take care of people.

You can argue that too many need help, which is a problem with successive governments failing to provide an adequate net.

You can argue that charities cream too much off the top, which is a problem with the way the sector is run.

You can argue that taxes are not spent efficiently and businesses and some wealthy people benefit more than the poor, which again is a government issue.

But to blame society for the existence of food banks isn’t correct. Society are the ones who help them work.

She is a total lowlife arsehole with no principles whatsoever. I’m surprised she even manages to have friends.

ralfeesmum · 25/11/2019 11:33

She is greedy and has no conscience about depriving someone who desperately NEEDS a foodbank parcel.

Heartless cow!

That's awful - it won't stop me donating to food banks though. There are always people who will play the system. I think they are a minority though.
