To think there should be a real consequence for the dishonest campaign tactics by the Tories

The conservatives have so far:

  • Set up a fake 'Labour Manifesto' site under the domain name labourmanifesto.co.uk, paying google for it to be the top result and paying for ads on Labour websites to draw people to it
  • Changed their twitter name to FactCheckUK during the leader's debate to present as an impartial fact checker
  • Doctored a video of Labour's brexit secretary to misrepresent the party's brexit stance

Boris Johnson is clearly allowing his election tactic of outright lies to be spread out across their campaign. It's revolting and there should be a consequence that's not a easily-paid fine.

Only for the Consevatives ?

GCAcademic · 22/11/2019 08:34

low - can you point us to the fake websites that the other parties have set up?

Justanotherlurker · 22/11/2019 08:35

If someone falls for the Labour Manifesto website then more fool them, I remember a time everyone was laughing at the same being done to UKIP.

katmarie · 22/11/2019 08:36

I agree, there should be consequences for such blatant deception of the public during an election campaign. It gives me the horrors to think about how many people have been taken in by the bullshit in the last few weeks. I really think we should be able to expect better from our politicians. But we're living in a world where it's acceptable to plaster your lies on the side of a bus, so I dont hold put much hope that the political culture will change any time soon.

Bunnybaubles · 22/11/2019 08:38

I watched a documentary where every time a certain bank (based overseas) was found guilty of money laundering and corruption Boris Johnson got involved and it all went away. Some muppets are unfortunately above the law. Would be great to read he got hit by a bus, preferably the one wearing his lies about Brexit and the extra cash the nhs would get.

Waitrosescheapestvodka · 22/11/2019 08:39

can you point us to the fake websites that the other parties have set up?

Have other parties made any fake websites during this election? If this is your argument you need to post the links.

So it's the fault of people believing the lie, rather than the liar?

GCAcademic · 22/11/2019 08:42

No Waitrose, other parties have not done this. That is precisely the point I was making to low who seems to think that it’s not only the Conservatives doing this.

GCAcademic · 22/11/2019 08:43

I remember a time everyone was laughing at the same being done to UKIP.

Was this done by a mainstream political party?

Sparklfairy · 22/11/2019 08:45

It's not a democracy if they have to cheat is it? In any other situation those responsible would be held accountable

lookatthebabypenguin · 22/11/2019 08:45

Should be. Won't be. Like with the referendum.

Boxofchocolatefrogs · 22/11/2019 08:46

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the labourmanifesto site. All looks pretty accurate to me. It’s not like it’s calling all the Labour Party supporters racist, sexist etc, etc but without any foundation at all. Nope that’s saved for the tac tics of the left.

Sparklfairy · 22/11/2019 08:46

Bunnybaubles I watched that documentary too. Shocking.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/11/2019 08:47

I don't know. It is all grist for the mill, is it not?

Corbyn's "I have in my hand redacted letters" and other carefully worded lies are just as bad.

We are living in monstrously interesting political times. At least they are all highly visible, if you open your eyes wide enough to see that they are ALL at it!

Once you realise that your longstanding party affiliations are based on yesteryear, that the party you are now voting for is nothing like the party you originally chose to support, you begin to see that ALL of them are charlatans.

I hated Blair and New Labour. But I can plainly see that Corbynism is what he has fighting against when he 'modernised' the Labour Party.

Having sent back my membership card I remaon politically homeless. I can't see an honest politician, a manifesto with any truth or attainable promises.

I have hope that this will galvanise many people to become politically active, to demand changes. But I suspect we will become more and more American, voting for the most popular liar and congratulating ourselves for being clear sighted!

Seroiously, don't kid yourself that your party is any better than any other! Look again at their promises with clear eyes.

It is fucking terrifying!

Sparklfairy · 22/11/2019 08:47

Anyone seen the advert with Maureen Lippmann (sp?) in it? It was just a smear campaign.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/11/2019 08:54

It was just a smear campaign. Did you expect anything else? It's all lies, a case of who can sling the most mud. They don't care if it doesn't stick, slinging it is the whole point!

It is bread and circuses, hosted for the delectation of us poor schmucks. We're supposed to be distracted by it, to think we have been clever enough to spot it, not to look too closely! Going by the number of party supporting threads and posts here, it is still working!

Think it through: if it were a real campaign with real intent would we read about it within hours? Do you think they are so very stupid (OK, I'll give you that) or do you think that maybe there may be some other agenda?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 22/11/2019 09:06

At least they are all highly visible, if you open your eyes wide enough to see that they are ALL at it!

If you think they are all in it to an equal extent and the current Tories haven’t gone further than anyone else, then it’s probably you that needs your eyes open wider.

There should be consequences but there won’t be OP. The bar was probably set when the last government was found in contempt of parliament and faced no consequences at all. They’re treating the public like idiots. With a bit of luck we’re not going to live down to their expectations of us.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2019 09:12

Can anyone point specifically to fake websites set up by the Labour Party with the intention to deceive the voting public?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/11/2019 09:14

If you think they are all in it to an equal extent and the current Tories haven’t gone further than anyone else, then it’s probably you that needs your eyes open wider. I make no judgement on how bad each and all of them are. Just that ALL of them are piss poor politicians and we deserve better!

I suspect you missed my point! And the bit about my having been a card carrying Labour supporter (for over 30 years!). I am not blind to the parlous state of UK politics, any of it!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/11/2019 09:16

Can anyone point specifically to fake websites set up by the Labour Party with the intention to deceive the voting public? Why focus on just that? There are plenty of other deceptions, sleights of hand and lies... Labour and Tory alike!

I know, the website is shocking, but it isn't the worst thing, the only thing or the last thing any party will do to deceive the electorate.

Actionhasmagic · 22/11/2019 09:16

It’s disgraceful

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 22/11/2019 09:18

I know it's a daily mail link but think they are as bad as each other-both seem to have set up "fact checking accounts" to fool electorate
We do deserve better.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2019 09:19

“ Why focus on just that? ”

Because that’s what the thread’s about!

But OK. What specifically has the Labour Campaign done to deceive the voting public?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/11/2019 09:35

What specifically has the Labour Campaign done to deceive the voting public? Seriously?

I imagine that, like myself a year or so ago, you wouldn't believe me if I told you, go look for it yourself! It's as prolific as the Tory deceptions. You just have to be willing to see it! I know I was very reluctant...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 22/11/2019 09:38

They are all the same - I have never been so aware of such lying and spouting absolute crap and lies in politics.
