To think there should be a real consequence for the dishonest campaign tactics by the Tories

The conservatives have so far:

  • Set up a fake 'Labour Manifesto' site under the domain name labourmanifesto.co.uk, paying google for it to be the top result and paying for ads on Labour websites to draw people to it
  • Changed their twitter name to FactCheckUK during the leader's debate to present as an impartial fact checker
  • Doctored a video of Labour's brexit secretary to misrepresent the party's brexit stance

Boris Johnson is clearly allowing his election tactic of outright lies to be spread out across their campaign. It's revolting and there should be a consequence that's not a easily-paid fine.

The manifesto is fully costed, the 1.2 trillion figure was roundly debunked

This meme needs to die, it has not been fully costed at all and most respected economists have come out and said so.

They have seriously downplayed the nationalisation plans, ignored macro economics etc etc.

The IFS who McDonnell quotes over a dozen times in his costings sheet has come out and said it is essentially horseshit.

The 'fully costed manifesto' meme was proven false in 2017, don't try and push it again now.

QuentinWinters · 22/11/2019 19:33

I cannot believe we are getting so much "they are all as bad".
No, no they aren't. The lying is blatant. Boris is an unelected prime minister who's government has already been found to be acting unlawfully. Now his government is openly lying in an election campaign. It is absolutely disgusting, totally undemocratic and anyone who votes for that party needs their head examined. They are destroying our country and the basic fabric of our society (I.e. that we can trust our public institutions).

I hate them and I dont understand how anyone can justify voting for that.

Butterisbest · 22/11/2019 19:33

Sparklfairy
Anyone seen the advert with Maureen Lippmann (sp?) in it? It was just a smear campaign
Maureen Lipman is a lifelong Labour supporter, those were her words, nobody held a gun to her head to make the advert. That's how she and many other Jewish Labour supporters feel.
That's no smear campaign by the Tories, it's an ex Labour supporter speaking the truth.

Justanotherlurker · 22/11/2019 19:45

You showing your ignorance and lack of critical thinking skills is maybe why you don't understand why people would vote for them.

Hint, it really isn't the echo chamber shit you obviously read where it is as simple as just the rich or right wing media.

QuentinWinters · 22/11/2019 19:48

Maybe I need to spell it out more. I don't know why anyone expects the Conservatives to actually do anything they say they will, given they are openly lying. So why anyone would choose to vote in those circs I dont know. I'm baffled.

QuentinWinters · 22/11/2019 19:49

To me it's like giving your money to that Nigerian prince who emailed you. Idiotic.

Justanotherlurker · 22/11/2019 19:58

You think Labour are being openly honest with all their policies and think they can do everything they say in their manifesto, I mean they have already made a mistake in their fully costed manifesto around free fiber broadband for one, ignored macro economics when it comes to taxing big business and those above 80K. That's before we get into Corbyn being a secret remainer and his privatisation plans meet EU regs after his fence sitting of a second ref.

We could try and drag up some form of austerity and pretend the not true labour government of 2010 was offering the same austerity measures and more on top in that campaign, as I said, your ignorance of politics in general is why you can't understand why people would vote for another party.

QuentinWinters · 22/11/2019 20:12

I'm also not voting labour. Grin
There is a difference between spin and disliking policies and outright lying and deception. Labour are spinning. Conservatives are deceiving.

If the conservatives weren't running scared and had solid policies that would work they would also be spinning. But they know that Brexit is a disaster and the UK is going down the pan. So they are deceiving deliberately to undermine people's belief in democracy and to encourage people to vote based on tribalism and emotion, not fact.
It is despicable.

Justanotherlurker · 22/11/2019 20:25

You said you couldn't understand why people voted conservative, you trying to muddy the waters and ignore my comment still points to you being lacking of critical thinking and have the nuanced thinking around political discourse.

If the conservatives weren't running scared and had solid policies that would work they would also be spinning.

The conservatives are not running scared, their manifesto is not even out yet, pushing the narrative to spinning is telling why you don't understand how anyone could vote differently.

But they know that Brexit is a disaster and the UK is going down the pan. So they are deceiving deliberately to undermine people's belief in democracy and to encourage people to vote based on tribalism and emotion, not fact.

The irony in this comment coming from a no doubt dyed in the wool labour supporter vocal remainer who has Corbyn as leader will wash over you without any self reflection.

Add on top of that the keenness to spam grin faces, just adds to your obvious political insight.

StealthPolarBear · 22/11/2019 20:28

They can do what they like with no consequences as far as I can tell. A bit like trump.

StealthPolarBear · 22/11/2019 20:38

The 350m per week for th e NHS, will it kick in straight away after brexit or will we need to wait a week or two? I'm so excited.

tilder · 22/11/2019 20:42

It's shocking. They're all at it. Apparently with impunity. Labour spin doctors started it. Trump elevated it to a ridiculous level. Now Boris is copying Trump and labour choose to ignore anyone who points out the missing numbers on their spreadsheet and offer more give aways.

I'm not sure who is worst. But it's stoking the divisions. Hideous. Worst consequence of Brexit.

Justanotherlurker · 22/11/2019 20:51

Cmon, trying to still play this meme is tired now, if you want to reference brexit, it is life long labour reaminers who are jumping through mental hoops to justify listening to multinationals and think tanks such as the IFS with regards to brexit and how the shit on the labour policies. The fact we are in a situation of a principled non career politician such as Corbyn in power with his openly fence sitting and voting record contributes heavily to why it's become a shit show.

There really is no good side in this argument anymore, no one wanted to win in 2010 and the can kicking excersise has come home to roost on all sides of the political spectrum. No one can offer the unicorns that both sides are expecting.

StealthPolarBear · 22/11/2019 21:02

"Cmon, trying to still play this meme is tired now"
I don't agree. I thibj it is so utterly disgraceful that he got away with it and now people want it forgotten about because its a bit boring
He fucking lied and again and again. Then he chickened out when asked to put his money where his mouth is. And it just doesn't matter. People vote for him* anyway. And he will spend the rest of his life in comfort and happiness.

  • not him, a party but they overlap a lot.
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 22/11/2019 21:08

Are you trying to prove the point that poster just made, just?

Justanotherlurker · 22/11/2019 21:12

I think the formatting in your post got screwed up, but to trying to ague a nuance of numbers argument when Corbyn's manifesto is full of holes shows you are not really arguing in good faith.

Justanotherlurker · 22/11/2019 21:16

Are you trying to prove the point that poster just made, just?

It was obvious that I didn't think I needed to clarify, unless you are trying to insinuate that it is just the tories trying to do it then you can be lumped into those lacking any form of critical thinking.

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 22/11/2019 21:39

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, Dominic Cummings has come to Mumsnet!

longwayoff · 22/11/2019 21:53

Old Dom is renowned for his incomprehensible critical thinking skills. Anybody watch the Leader debate tonight? Bozza did quite poorly.

ListeningQuietly · 22/11/2019 21:58

Fake news is dangerous
it will hurt the vulnerable
we must fight it

Justanotherlurker · 22/11/2019 22:02

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, Dominic Cummings has come to Mumsnet!

Any critism of Labour must be Tory HQ is an MN meme, we can ignore why it went into melt down in 2010, 15 and 17, it does't require any self reflection as we are on a site that prides itself as being middle class educated with an RG degree and never met a tory and it is others who lack critical thinking and are uneducated in political discussion where it is considered proud to have never even met a tory.

shalligoagain · 22/11/2019 22:05

Tories are obviously feeling the need to lie and deceive. Corbyn must have a better chance than I thought!

I agree with a pp. Boris is easily as bad as 'pussy grabbing' Trump (lying, racist, misogynist), but a blind eye is turned to everything he does wrong, whilst shouting down Corbyn with the tired old (and proven untrue repeatedly) right-wing rag slogans.

And don't even get me started on Mogg, Gove, Patel and the rest of the rabble who have always had their own interests at heart, rather than those of ordinary British people.

I remember reading a 2016 Nick Clegg interview that really hit home the utter contempt for the working classes when he met with Cameron and Osborne and mentioned the need for more social housing....

"It would have been in a Quad meeting, so either Cameron or Osborne. One of them – I honestly can’t remember whom – looked genuinely nonplussed and said, ‘I don’t understand why you keep going on about the need for more social housing – it just creates Labour voters.’ They genuinely saw housing as a petri dish for voters. It was unbelievable"

longwayoff · 22/11/2019 22:06
Hmm
QuentinWinters · 22/11/2019 22:34

and never met a tory and it is others who lack critical thinking and are uneducated in political discussion where it is considered proud to have never even met a tory. Hmm this sounds like my phone when I play the game of auto predict. Did a bot get stuck??
