To think there should be a real consequence for the dishonest campaign tactics by the Tories

Waitrosescheapestvodka · 22/11/2019 08:31

The conservatives have so far:

  • Set up a fake 'Labour Manifesto' site under the domain name labourmanifesto.co.uk, paying google for it to be the top result and paying for ads on Labour websites to draw people to it
  • Changed their twitter name to FactCheckUK during the leader's debate to present as an impartial fact checker
  • Doctored a video of Labour's brexit secretary to misrepresent the party's brexit stance

Boris Johnson is clearly allowing his election tactic of outright lies to be spread out across their campaign. It's revolting and there should be a consequence that's not a easily-paid fine.

Of course they get away with it, money talks after all.

Waitrosescheapestvodka · 22/11/2019 09:58

There aren't any actual examples given of Labour lies beyond the DM link from @mumsiedarlingrevolta, which is asserts that Labour having a longstanding account called TheInsiderUK is as bad as mascarading as an independent fact checker for an hour Hmm the rest is just objecting to Corbyn's stance on brexit and inequality. It's bare faced spin.

I'm no fan of Labour currently, and I know that politicians bending the truth is not new, but the Conservatives are using digital media to lie. This is different to a politician avoiding a question or bending facts, it is an overt and recordable lie which the party have made a decision to make.

“ They are all the same - I have never been so aware of such lying and spouting absolute crap and lies in politics“
In what way has the Labour campaign deceives the voting public?

BlackSwanGreen · 22/11/2019 10:03

I agree OP - it is absolutely shocking

GhostofFrankGrimes · 22/11/2019 10:12

YANBU it is a disgrace. And they are not all the same I've not seen another party reach such levels of desperation and dishonesty.

Clavinova · 22/11/2019 10:14

What specifically has the Labour Campaign done to deceive the voting public?

Tune in to LBC now!

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2019 10:18

What, the 80K guy?

MrsDoylesTea · 22/11/2019 10:29

Isn't Momentum starting to run out of people starting these ridiculous threads?

From previous posters link;

2017 Labour's fake internet poster

"The image, which pictures the official logos of both Public Health England and the NHS, asks: “Have you bought your NHS insurance? From January 2018 the NHS will no longer be a free service."

“You and your family may be eligible for minimum health coverage for £4,500 a year. Don’t put it off. Don’t put your family at risk.”

"The phone number on the poster puts your through to NHS England."

"Labour Future shared the poster on Facebook, and deleted the post after an outcry over the "clearly fake" information."

Confusedbeetle · 22/11/2019 10:32

Oh come on, these are politicians we are talking about, this is the world of election tricks. Wise up and just vote the way you want. No need to pick out one party, or maybe there is, this is MN after all

Velveteenfruitbowl · 22/11/2019 10:34

I wonder why they bothered. The real labour manifesto is deeply troubling. It’s like reading the opening chapters of a dystopian novel. I can just see the economy collapsing as I read it.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2019 10:34

Just to be clear- people are perfectly happy with the political party which is probably going to provide the next prime minister faking websites with the sole intention of deceiving the public? Yes or no.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 22/11/2019 10:38

Well said @CuriousaboutSamphire.

This absolute, blind deification of one party is naive at best, stupid at worst.

If people are wilfully refusing to see fault on every side, then they are beyond help. This is a horrible election and there is no good outcome.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 22/11/2019 10:40

I’m not sure the labour manifesto is going to be the biggest issue in this election if you’re worried about the economy collapsing.

Clavinova · 22/11/2019 10:41

Not going in the direction I thought it was - never mind, here's FullFact instead...

Tax

"Jeremy Corbyn also said Labour’s manifesto was costed with" -

“No increases in VAT or income tax or National Insurance for anyone earning less than £80,000."

“There is no increase for 95% of taxpayers.”

"But that doesn’t mean Labour plans no tax rises whatsoever for these people, because there’s more to tax than just VAT, income tax and National Insurance."

"For example Labour’s manifesto commits to scrapping marriage allowance, a policy introduced in 2015 which gives a tax break to couples with a combined income of under £62,500."

"In 2018/19, 1.78 million people claimed marriage allowance at a cost of £485 million."

"Apart from that there are various other taxes that could affect people with salaries of under £80,000."

"Labour has pledged to reverse cuts to inheritance tax made by the Conservatives since 2017, which allowed people to pass on an amount of property tax-free, in addition to the existing £325,000 tax free allowance which applies to all assets."

"Labour also plans to put corporation tax back up to 26%, following reductions over the past nine years."

"We typically think of corporation tax being associated with large companies, but corporation tax is paid by all limited businesses."

"Around one million UK businesses in 2017/18 had a corporation tax bill of up to £10,000, meaning in most cases their profits would have been no higher than £53,000."

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2019 10:42

I see faults on all sides. But I agree, the deification of Johnson is ridiculous. The way nothing sticks to him. The way he is not called out on his lies. The way he lied to the Queen and misled parliament and the people. Not to mention the 40 hospitals and 200000 police officers....

GhostofFrankGrimes · 22/11/2019 10:42

Lots of false equivalence going here. I want to see elections fought fairly. If a party is happy to use underhanded tactics during an election don't expect them to play fairly with ordinary people when in government.

Mlou32 · 22/11/2019 10:44

The lot of them are as bad as one another. They spend all their time in fighting and trying to score points against one another at the expense of the public. You can't single out one; the lot of them are dishonest weasels.

Gwlondon · 22/11/2019 10:45

Waitrosescheapestvodka I think voter fraud is more shocking and I wish there could be some real consequences for

  • people who vote more than once
  • people who are ineligible to vote being given a polling card
  • people who take elderly people’s postal votes and do not carry out their voting wishes.

Real scandal! We can’t really call ourselves a democracy if this is going on.

BarbourellaTheCoatzilla · 22/11/2019 10:45

On the NHS, he [Jeremy Corbyn] repeated his outrageous lie that Mr Johnson plans to ‘sell our National Health Service out to the United States’. Setting aside the complete lack of evidence for this ridiculous assertion

Department of Health spending on Independent Sector Providers (ISPs) increased from 6.1% in 2013-14 to 7.6% in 2015-16. A 2017 BMA report on NHS privatisation reveals that over the same period, spending on ISPs increased from £6.6bn to £8.7bn, an increase of 33%. Both figures exclude spending on general practice, dentistry and community pharmacy.

Most of the spending on ISPs is in the community health sector; in 2015/16:
• 44% of NHS spending on ISPs was spent on community health services;
• 25% on general and acute services
• 11% on mental health and learning disability
• 2% on primary care

Companies with major contracts include BMI, Ramsay, BUPA, Care UK, Nuffield Health, Spire and Virgin Care. Many of these companies are part of larger corporate structures with partners based in tax havens, making it possible for them to avoid UK tax. Privatisation takes many forms, including private care in NHS hospitals, NHS care in private hospitals, extensive contracts for NHS community services, ambulance services, prison healthcare and learning disability services.

But yeah, the NHS isn’t for sale apparently Hmm

Trewser · 22/11/2019 10:47

Can anyone point specifically to fake websites set up by the Labour Party with the intention to deceive the voting public?

They don't need to, as they have all the memes and shares on social media to spread misinformation. The amount of shit I see shared on FB from Labour supporters is shocking, particularly the Jewish conspiracy ones.

scaryteacher · 22/11/2019 10:47

Sparkl The Maureen Lipman ad was shocking because, iirc, she has always been Labour. Evidently, the anti semitism has got to her.
