To think three 14 inch pizzas is too much between 5?

DH has asked me to pick up pizza for dinner. There are 5 of us (4 adults and one child) and he's asked me to get three 14 inch ones. AIBU to think this is way too much pizza for the 5 of us?? I get him wanting me to get 3 due to different preferences but surely we could just get 3 10 inch pizzas?

What would you get for 5 people if it was a choice of 10 inch or 14 inch?

Nice update OP! To be honest I think often people just eat what’s available, I know I’m guilty of having an extra slice if it’s ‘just sat there’, even if I’d have been perfectly content if there’d not been any more.

LolaSmiles · 23/11/2019 08:55

You could be right dolly, whereas I don't understand plate clearing so would order a 14inch for me and if a slice or two is left that would be my lunch.

Glad it worked out ok OP

ChrisPrattsFace · 23/11/2019 09:02

We had pizza last night. Four adults and three pizzas, including sides.
We had two slices left and they were breakfast!

Chellp33 · 23/11/2019 10:40

It seems like a simple answer tbh, did you buy the 14 inch pizzas? Did every one have enough to eat and did you finish them? If yes it's not to much. if not was it enough to cut out a pizza? To ask everyone else won't settle your debate as everyone eats different amounts 🤔 where I live the sizes are 10 inch are personal pizzas then 12" would share 2 maybe 3 if there's sides, if I go between a few adults we get a 16". I've never seen a 14" 👍😀

I think lots of people eat more ‘because it’s there’ and therefore increasing portion sizes are a key driver in the amount of overweight and obese people. Food manufacturers realised that if they increased the portions, eg ‘sharing bags’ of crisps, sweets etc, they would sell more and people frequently don’t share, just eat the lot.
Will be interesting to see if your friends provide more pizza next time you are at theirs OP

A large pizza per 2 adults. Your husband is right.

Rtruth · 23/11/2019 17:27

As a pizza lover I can easily eat at large dominos pizza (14 inches) so 4 adults could easily eat 3. Think you either don’t like pizza or you’re one if these people who does do cheat days! 😉

Sara107 · 23/11/2019 17:29

We’ve just been out for pizza- I would guess they were 12-14inch. We ordered 3, for two adults and a ten year old. Brought home half of ten year olds in a box. That will be lunch tomorrow for all of us, along with soup and salads. We had pizza for our wedding, lovely meter long ones from a little Italian bakery. We had masses left over, filled the freezer and lived on it for ages!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 23/11/2019 17:32

I think 3x14 inch between 4 and a child is just right.

Lilyflower1 · 23/11/2019 17:32

I agree with the OP. No wonder there’s an obesity crisis in this country!

nuxe1984 · 23/11/2019 17:43

Considering most people eat a 12 inch pizza to themselves when they go out - 3 x 14 inches isn't excessive!

I always think better to have too much food than not enough too.

ALongHardWinter · 23/11/2019 17:45

This sounds about right,if you're having sides with it,such as garlic bread and coleslaw. I'll never forget the time, quite a few years ago, when my DM was aghast that I was going to eat a 9 inch pizza,ALL BY MYSELF.

Bareres · 23/11/2019 17:49

A happy ending thanks to mumsnet!! I love pizza and could eat a whole 14 inch to myself so was on your DH's side anyway. Its way more calories than I would normally have for one meal but its so delicious that my stomach conveniently expands for the occasion.

Happygirl79 · 23/11/2019 17:51

How do you know how hungry the other people are?
Is cost an issue here?
Sounds fine to me

Megan2018 · 23/11/2019 17:56

We are a large pizza per person house, don’t have it that often but when I do I want to binge

ManiacalLapwing · 23/11/2019 17:57

Living your life according to made up portion sizes on the back of packets sounds pretty boring to me. Portion sizes are made up by companies so they can say their food is healthy or that it fits into the category of "snack" for example - that's it.

A dinner plate is 10 or 11 inches. Therefore half a 10 inch pizza with salad items on the side would fill a plate. Sometimes you might be hungry and have an extra piece of pizza or some more sides afterwards. You don't need to read the back of the packet.

Straycatstrut · 23/11/2019 17:58

I'm pretty 7yr old would eat a whole 14 inch one to himself if I let him!Grin

I was Shock my mum bought him a full sized fish from the chippy the other night when she was looking after him. He ate every bit and she couldn't even finish half!

I don't think that just because they "can" or "want to" means they should. When it's the really thick, topping heavy ones I think 4 slices each should be plenty. 3 for kids.

14inch ones have 10 slices each right?! Barmy.

Straycatstrut · 23/11/2019 17:59

Why does some of my text keep disappearing! Arrghhh!

"I'm pretty sure my 7 year old..."

QuintessentialShadow · 23/11/2019 18:01

Maybe one of your friends rang your dh and said 'please get some more pizza in than normal, as tminus seem to think we have appetites like mudgets'.

dontlickthelamp · 23/11/2019 18:07

I don’t know how people could eat that much, but I suppose if you’re snacking through the evening it’s much easier than in one portion

Andysbestadventure · 23/11/2019 18:16

They're clearly just tight in their house OP or go hungry when you share with them 😂

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 23/11/2019 18:19

When DD is home we have two large Pizza Hut pizzas between the four of us (DH, me, DS 16, DD 21) and there is usually a few slices left over. We rarely bother with sides as then there’s even more pizza leftover.

safariboot · 23/11/2019 18:20

Hope you enjoyed your pizza :)

Going by what me and DM have. We like thin crust and if it's a Domino's order we'll normally order a medium (11 inch) plus some sides. If we weren't having sides it'd be a small or medium pizza each. So 3 larges between 5 is what I'd get if I was just having pizza not anything else. If it's supermarket pizza again we split it and have chips/garlic bread and maybe veg as well.

Because it's an area thing a 14-inch piece ends up about twice as big as a 10-inch, and I reckon 3 10-inch for 5 people would be miserly by itself. If you're having other stuff too and maybe they're deep pans it might be OK.

Pandaintheporridge · 23/11/2019 18:35

I have read a thread on here which discussed whether or not 4 Jaffa cakes constituted a binge.

Mikki69 · 23/11/2019 18:50

Left- over pizza tastes lovely the next day. Think it's because the topping has marinaded. My kids always ask for big pizza so they can have it for packed lunch the next day!
