To allow 12 YO DS a shandy made of alcohol free beer?

I like a beer in the evening. I’ve decided to try alcohol free beer to reduce my alcohol intake. It’s pretty grim so I’ve been mixing it with lemonade to make it into shandy.

DS wanted a shandy, as it’s alcohol free. AIBU to have let him?

It’s not an every day thing btw, and he’s only allowed a very small amount of real alcohol on special occasions eg Christmas.

Also your recommendations for good AF beer if you have them would be most welcome.

Kids can buy shandy bass at the corner shop so wouldn’t see it as a bad thing as a treat at all

Its non alcoholic really don't see why not. Mine wouldn't like it.

I don't give my 14yo any alcohol at all ever. I would happily give him an alcofree shandy, its beer flavoured lemonade.

In the 70s we had a shandy pop ,it was delicious. No issue whatsoever if there is not alcohol.

At this age in France he'd be having wine with his meals so I don't see why not at all!
Have you tried becks blue? That's not bad at all, tastes fine.

No, it's not something I would want to normalise. It may be alcohol free shandy now but you would be habit forming and when DC is older they risk becoming addicted to alcohol because they are used to 'having a beer at night'

An occasional shandy? Yes. Every night, for them or you? No.

Yes I’ve tried the Becks one. It’s not bad.

I’ve got Cheepo tesco stuff atm so that’s probably why it tastes a bit grim.

You used to be able to buy shandy in cans when I was a kid, it's like 1/2% alcohol. I let my girls have wine with special meals by that age anyway, in France the waiter just poured them wine without asking

I have drink non-alcoholic beer most nights, my son (four) regularly had a sip, it’s no different to a sip of fanta.

My kids were having normal shandy at 13 and under so dont see the problem. I think its wise to let them have some every so often rather than nothing at all then as soon as they can drink they go mad.

Most of these shandy drinks, such as Shandy Bass, sold do still have some alcohol in them, something like 0.5% They are not entirely alcohol free.
Legally under 18s can buy low alcohol drinks like Shandy Bass, because the licensing laws only apply to drinks which are over 0.5%

So Shandy Bass, for example, is no 'better' than a shandy made with lemonade and many alcohol-free beers. Becks Blue is 0.05% alcohol.

The franziskaner alcohol free is really nice if you like weissbier, it tastes party much the same as the regular one. They used to sell it in Tesco not sure now, I had it a few times when I was pregnant

Wildorchidz it's legal over 5, although of course not recommended regularly. I was about 12 when my parents allowed me to have Bucks Fizz lemonade with a bit of wine in at Christmas. I don't think that's unusual.

Issue being it's more expensive than a 4 pack of real beer!
