To allow 12 YO DS a shandy made of alcohol free beer?

I like a beer in the evening. I’ve decided to try alcohol free beer to reduce my alcohol intake. It’s pretty grim so I’ve been mixing it with lemonade to make it into shandy.

DS wanted a shandy, as it’s alcohol free. AIBU to have let him?

It’s not an every day thing btw, and he’s only allowed a very small amount of real alcohol on special occasions eg Christmas.

Also your recommendations for good AF beer if you have them would be most welcome.

Cheers

mopmum35 The legal age limit for drinking alcohol at home is 5. Studies go both ways in terms of whether a little drink here and there helps/hinders the child's adult relationship with drinking.

My DS is 19 and hardly drinks at all. We have always allowed him to taste our drinks if he wanted to, there is no mystery to alcohol, it is not tempting forbidden fruit. He did get quite drunk at a party when he was 16 and experienced a minor hangover, he calls it his first and last hangover.

Why do parents thing it's ok to give alcohol to a child? Would you let them smokeconfused seriously WHY do they need a taste of a drink, doesn't matter if it birthdays or Christmas, sorry folks I just dont get it, there is a reason it has an age limit hmm**

The legal age for a child to drink alcohol at home is age 5, they cannot purchase alcohol themselves until age 18.

There is arguments both for pro and against.

@Whatisthisfuckery

My 12, almost 13 year old has one made with my lager. I'll watch him make it, to make sure there is more lemonade than lager, but I don't have a problem. He had a very small glass of wine a while ago. It's not at all often.

It's really no big deal at all. My parents allowed me to do it when I was young and I'm no raging alcoholic or binge drinker and never have been.

What? You allow your 12 year old to have alcohol?

The legal age to drink in your own home is 5.

Thanks to this thread I’m going to try some of these beers. I’m nearly teetotal these days due to migraines so will be nice to have some alternatives Smile

I remember my mum used to buy us ‘de alcoholised’ wine for a treat when I was in primary school.

@bluetongue I'm in the same position re migraines/alcohol. It's had the odd effect that having regular migraines has made me healthier - I used to drink almost every day!

I think this thread is just like many others...different strokes for different folks that's all.....just like the shoes off in the house vs shoes on in the house etc .

My favourite is Free Damm if you can get hold of it (Ocado have it).

Damntheman · 21/11/2019 08:59

Erdinger do a rather nice alcohol free. Sadly all my other recommendations are norwegian brands which you can't get in the UK (yet). But there are a lot of very nice AF beers out there!

Snoopdogsbitch · 21/11/2019 09:04

Another vote for Erdinger- it's amazing- tastes very like the regular one.

Erdinger alcohol free is the best. Followed by Beck's Blue. I don't know why you are forcing it down as a shandy if you don't like it though, seems a bit weird.

Mopmum35 · 21/11/2019 15:51

I was meaning the age limit 18.....

Either way the legal age limit of 5 ( drinking at home) is just insane, well in my opinion anyway.
