to suggest that Mumsnet is quite sexist against men?

I don't know if it's just the threads I've been on. I don't know how many men use Mumsnet.

Sexism either way makes me equally uncomfortable. How do other Mumsnet users feel about this?

Yes it feels quite aggressive. I avoid twitter so assumed it was a convention from there. It's very new here though, last few months I would say.

Do you enjoy belittling people? The only person that you're showing up is yourself.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/11/2019 22:53

I clearly said "highlight" not just "type out" ie I didn't know how to make the name appear in bold type as happens automatically when you @ a posters name.

I'm not responding to you any further.

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2019 22:55

You can still highlight a poster's name between * * and avoid the whole twitter-jabbing thing

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/11/2019 22:59

That's what I didn't know when I first came on here. I didn't realise you could bold text until they explained it to me.

Inebriati · 20/11/2019 23:00

Its really bizarre to generalize about a whole website based on a few comments on one thread on one board.

Thats like saying Reddit is full of people who like to watch people die, isnt it awful? I went on Reddit Watch People die once and you'll never believe how bad it was. Still, that's Reddit for you!

Sagradafamiliar · 20/11/2019 23:02

Sorry, I know I shouldn't laugh but that genuinely tickled me! I mean, this is what I've been up against this whole time.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 20/11/2019 23:02

Absolutely

It says it right under this box

And obviously it’s exactly the same method of highlighting a quote

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 20/11/2019 23:03

Though ive made so many bolding mistakes myself Grin

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 20/11/2019 23:03

Oooh including the post above my last

Doh!

Sagradafamiliar · 20/11/2019 23:05

Even if not using bold, there's always just typing the name you're referring to. I know it's a radical concept for some, eh Hearhooves?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/11/2019 23:10

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer

But when you are new to the site you don't necessarily know what the tools are or where to find them.

I.didnt know that there was a bold function or how to find it, so I didn't know how to.bold names, or quotes.

I used the @ function to bold a posters name and I'm assuming nthats what most other posters do too. Certainly on most other threads the vast majority of posters @ everyone.

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2019 23:10

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2019 23:13

When I was new it too me a wee whike to get used to things, Hear, and that was using a PC. Had to learn it all again for phone / app.

There's a guide somewhere ...

Sagradafamiliar · 20/11/2019 23:14

You're clearly quite shit at generalising MN, Hear, because it's the total opposite. @ ing people is mostly seen as passive aggressive at best and goady when repeatedly doing so after being told to stop. Most threads/vast majority, no. Not at all lol.

birdsdestiny · 20/11/2019 23:15

Bloody hell. The only part of reddit I have looked at is the trolls one, apparently there's a whole world I am unaware of.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/11/2019 23:19

AutumnCrow

I've only ever used it on my phone. It's not very self explanatory is it? I often see people asking how to pm, post links, strike through etc. Once you know how to do.it it's easy but it's finding where the functions are.

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2019 23:42

Never hurts to ask, Hear, I'll help if I can. There should be buttons to explore beneath your text box meanwhile.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/11/2019 23:56

Thanks autumn I know how to do it now. Once someone told me you could do.it and where to find the buttons it was fine.

Pineapple1 · 21/11/2019 01:05

@busybarbara

What World do you live in? Your own one?

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 21/11/2019 07:33

hear

Oh i know...took me ages to work out italics...and they are fucking easy

I think the site is different on Mobile and desktop as well, which doesn't help

Pan2 · 21/11/2019 07:50

Sexism either way makes me equally uncomfortable - OP

Nope, sexism is expressed toward women, and is used as a tool oppression. Making discriminatory statements about individual men or as a group isn't even in the same league, due to power imbalance in society. It carries much, much less of a threat.
MN can be a bit discriminatory at times but AFAIK it has no impact on the wider world.

FWIW long-standing male poster here.

Pan2 · 21/11/2019 07:51

And I also live in busybarbara's world.

BIWI · 21/11/2019 07:59

Me too!
